Lakshmi Review

Star Cast : Prabhu Deva, Aishwarya Rajesh, Ditya
Director : Vijay

Films featuring child protégés always strike a chord with audiences. Lakshmi is definitely not the best of director Vijay and Prabhu Deva but the film works to some extent mainly because of Ditya, the 12 year old dancing wonder who steals the show with her impeccable dancing skills.

Lakshmi (Ditya) has a great passion for dance that her legs can’t rest on hearing peppy music but her mom Nandini (Aishwarya Rajesh) hates anything connected to music and dance! However, Lakshmi secretly dances in the absence of her mom, she gets the help of a new friend Krishna (Prabhu Deva) who runs of a coffee shop and even enrolls herself in the Chennai Dance Academy. Lakshmi impresses everyone in the academy and she is a rock star among the other students. Right when the Chennai team gears up for the biggest dancing competition of India, Lakshmi struggles because of stage fear.

Knowing Lakshmi’s stage fear and passion for dance, Krishna asks the judges and Chennai dance team include her for the competition. Only now, Lakshmi comes to know that Krishna is a dancing legend and we also learn that he was supposed to marry Nandini but misses the chance due to an unfortunate accident. Meanwhile, Yusuf who won the title against Krishna tells him that Lakshmi and Chennai team can contest in the competition only if he trains them. Krishna gives his nod and gets ready for the competition. Can Krishna fulfill Lakshmi’s dream?

As said earlier, the film belongs to Ditya, the child not only looks cute but also impresses with her amazing moves. The first half of the film moves at a leisure pace. Vijay who is known for handling human relationships well on the big screen actually starts attracting us only in the second half, especially with the last two dance sequences and the emotionally driven climax.

on the down soide the plot of predictable and the relationship between Prabhu Deva and Aishwarya Rajesh is half baked. The film travels at its own sluggish pace until the first half and picks up the momentum only after Prabhu Deva train the kids.

Vijay could also have engagingly presented scenes involving dancing competition in the initial portions of the second half. Terrific actress Aishwarya Rajesh didn’t have much scope to perform and Vijay could have avoided scenes teasing the obese kid. The plus points of the film are Ditya and Prabhu Deva’s dance sequences

Technically, Sam CS’s music is strictly functional for a dance film, Lakshmi definitely demands better songs and music. On the other hand, Nirav Shah shines with his crystal clear cinematography and rich visuals.

To conclude, Lakshmi is a watchable emotional entertainer mainly because of the little rockstar Ditya. The film is also rightly named after her character name!
