Nightmares Are A Tool Of Human Mind Trying To Warn Us About Things We Should Not Ignore

When we wake up from a nightmare, we try to calm our fears by saying: “It was only a dream”. But according to Doctor Gayle Delaney, co-founder of the International Association for the Study of Dreams and one of the pioneers of modern dream theory, the last thing you should do when it comes to these kinds of dreams is trying to forget them.

“Scary dreams have to do with something that scares you and which you need to deal with,” Delaney says. “It tends to be something real which is threatening you. Really terrifying dreams try to get your attention and say: ‘Something or some behavior in your life is threatening your well-being or the well-being of those you love and it’s up to you to recognize it’.”

According to Dr. Delaney, these are the most common terrifying images in dreams, and what they mean:

Wild animals

Having a dream about lions, snakes, crocodiles or spiders means you feel threatened by “something” or “someone” in real life. Perhaps at work, or it could relate to your parents or partner.

Murderers

Delaney says that one of her clients once dreamed that he was in bed with his wife and a drunk thug climbed into the bed between them. It turned out he had an unresolved issue with alcoholism, resulting in his wife leaving him some time later. The “killer” was really his alcoholism.

Natural disasters

Storms, tornadoes and tidal waves are telltale signs of a burden bigger than yourself which could end up harming you at any moment.

“If it’s serious in your dreams, it’s serious in your life,” adds Doctor Gayle Delaney. She insists that nightmares almost always relate to real issues which are threatening you. Be they certain behaviors or work situations, your dreams can help you understand and overcome these threats.
