Rewards: Are They An Advantage Or A Disadvantage During The Formative Years Of Our Children?

Does rewarding the kids for good behavior have a positive influence on their education?

When is it a good idea to reward them for their efforts and behavior? What types of rewards should we give them? How often?

These are just a few among thousands of questions that arise when devoted parents reflect upon when they wish to offer their children the best psychological, cultural, and emotional upbringing as much as they can.

Experts in early childhood education explain that it is not a bad idea to rewards the children. In fact, the most important thing to consider is not whether to reward them or not, but how to do it so that it does not sound as blackmail.

Here are some tips:

- Choosing the kind of reward: Ideally, you should never reward them with material gifts but symbolic ones, such as a hug, a walk, a song, a compliment, a movie and some popcorn, a story, or dance.

- Explain what it really is: Depending on their age, it is important to explain to the children that for every action, there is a reaction, that it is not punishment, but a reward. This can help increase their self-esteem.

- Using the illustrative charts: Educational murals illustrating the type of behavior or activity that you expect them to achieve and the resulting reward for each good behavior. This makes it easier for the child to visualize that each action has a consequence.

When in doubt, use your good sense. Always remember that the main objective is to have the child understand the purpose of this reward and that you would feel happy and proud of their good behavior.

A reward can be motivating, and motivation is essential to stimulate learning. They may also act as a catalyst for further positive behavior. From the moment, in which the child realizes that their good actions produce gratifying consequences, they feel happier and more prepared to face life as adults.
