Rangoon Review

Star Cast : Gautham Karthik, Sana, Siddique
Director : Rajkumar Periyasamy

Debutant director Rajkumar Periyasamy grabs our attention with his smart writing, authentic research work, realistic characters and an engaging screenplay in Rangoon. Despite being an associate to AR Murugadoss, Rajkumar has his own style and has a realistic approach to film making.

Venkat (Gautham Karthik) is an Indian descendant born in Burma. In the late 80's Venkat's family moves to Burma Nagar in Chennai. Unfortunately, Venkat loses his dad when he was a child and grows up with the support of his mother. Years passes by and now, Venkat is a bright young man.

Though Venkat was not able to continue his education, he is bright and dedicated in whatever he does which impresses local gold businessman Gunaseelan (Siddique)

Only after saving Gunaseelan's life from his business enemies, Venkat gets to know that his boss is involved in smuggling. But for Venkat, becoming rich is a dream and he along with his group of friends bring back the old smuggling to save Gunaseelan's name among the local businessmen and also for their own good. Lady luck smiles at Venkat and his friends initially but when they decide to leave the business after one last deal, they lose huge money. What exactly happened? Watch out for the plenty of twists and turns.

As said earlier, Rajkumar Periyasamy's intelligent writing is the biggest strength of Rangoon, especially the first half moves like a tracer bullet with several brilliantly executed scenes. The underworld side of Burma Bazar and smuggled gold is an unexplored territory but Rajkumar Periyasamy authentically portrayed with lively characters. Yes, the film loses the steam after interval but the strong climax and solid message compensate all the flaws.

Rangoon is the best film in Gautham Karthik's career so far, and he has brought so much life to the Venkat character, his energy level is amazing and if he pick right scripts, he can go places. Newcomer Sana looks gorgeous and given a decent performance in the limited scope offered to her. Siddique is brilliant as the experienced businessman Gunaseelan and the two friends of Gautham Karthik have also scored well.

Music composers RH Vikram and Vishal Chandrasekar have delivered impressive work and Anish Tharun Kumar's cinematography is another major strength for Rangoon.

To conclude, Rangoon is a solid debut for Rajkumar Periyasamy, it's an engaging action thriller. Go for it!
