Maragadha Naanayam Review

Director : ARK Saravan
Star Cast : Adhi, Nikki Galrani, Anandraj, Munishkanth, Daniel

Debut director ARK Saravan impresses us with his wacky characters and ingenious writing in Maragadha Naanayam. Though the setup is familiar for a heist horror comedy, Saravan has packaged the film with interesting moments and he makes sure that audiences are kept engrossed.

Senguttavan (Aadhi) comes to Chennai from Thirrupur to settle his debt of RS 40 lakhs. He chooses smuggling to come up in life and joins hands with Ramdoss (Munishkanth) and Elango (Daniel).

But Senguttavan is unhappy and urges Ramdoss to do something big. Meanwhile, a Chinese smuggler comes to Chennai to get the precious powerful ‘Maragadha Naanayam’, which is rumored to have killed hundreds of people as its original possessor ghost Irumburai Arasan (who defeated many kingdoms after holding Maragadha Naanayam) takes revenge against anyone who touches the gem.

After leading smugglers refuse to find out Maragadha Naanayam, Senguttavan and Elango agrees to do the job for a lucrative 10cr deal. But before sketching the plan, they meet a saint, who gives them an idea to seek the help of someone, who lost his life by acquiring the gem. Elango suggests his dead smuggler uncle Chidambaram’s name and accidentally, the soon his spirit enters Ramdoss' body.

Elango’s uncle Chidambaram asks Senguttavan and his nephew to arrange three more dead bodies to bring back the spirits of his friends. In the process, Senguttavan meets his lady love Sankaya (Nikki Galrani), who commits suicide and they also meet two dead bodies (Arun Raja Kamaraj and Sangili Murugan). The rest of the film is  whether Senguttavan and Elango get a chance to get Maragadha Naanayam and what happens after they hold it with their hands!

We don’t want to reveal the suspense element but Nikki Galrani’s dubbing choice is easily one of the amusing concepts in Tamil cinema. Aadhi as usual tries to perform with his limited expressions while Munishkanth and Daniel have once again provided a laugh riot with their typical mannerisms and dialogue delivery. Anandraj, who comes as the comical villain Twinkle Ramanathan is a scream along with his bunch of assistants and other major characters including Arun Raja Kamaraj and Sangili Murugan are adequate.

Director Saravan initially takes his own time to establish the characters but once he gets the main theme, the film maintains  tempo and continues to entertains us throughout. Though the film becomes little stretched in the pre-climax, the impact created by the characters makes us engaged till the climax as we want to know what exactly happens to them, especially to Sanakya.

Editor GK Prasanna has done a commendable job with his crisp packaging, cinematographer PK Varma’s color tone an visual pattern aptly suits for the genre and the background score of Dibu Ninan Thomas is quite impressive for a debutant.

Overall, Maragadha Naanayam is an enjoyable fantasy heist horror comedy, which is a good weekend watch.
