Sanguchakkaram  Review

Star Cast : Geetha, Monicka, Dilip Subbarayan, Raja, Jeremy Roskie
Director : Maarison

It's the holiday season. Sanguchakkaram is a smart horror movie with charming characters. A kids-friendly horror comedy without any violence or double meaning dialogues. The makers have made the film to attract the kids during this holiday season and they have achieved it to a large extent with moral stories and a bunch of smart child artists in lead roles. In fact, one of the ghosts in the film is a kid.

The story is predictable. A palace is haunted by two ghosts—Angayarkanni (Geetha) and her daughter Malar (Baby Monicka). A bunch of kids gets trapped in the palace by kidnappers, then there is a real estate agent who sends a poosari and magicians to drive away the ghosts to sell the palace. The film is all about how the two ghosts save the kids and vice versa.

The film’s biggest advantage is the treatment. Generally, horror comedy films are known for double meaning dialogues, high glam quotient, and killings in a flashback. But Sanguchakkaram is packaged for the kids and their parents. On the downside, others may find the movie to be silly.

The first half of the film follows the routine template of any horror comedies but post-intermission, the dialogues between the kids and ghosts are a laugh riot. Director Maarison has also used the conversation to tell moral stories like how modern day parents torture kids to achieve something big, the importance of money over anything in the world, the existence of casteism, betrayal and how humans have become evil more than ghosts.

Nishesh, the kid who raises a lot of funny questions is a major attraction. The film ends with a punchline teasing Superstar Rajinikanth’s political entry will bring a gentle smile. The conversation between local poosari and foreign exorcists is a scream. Another major relief is that the director has not shown any flashback portion for the ghosts.

As said earlier, the film is meant only for kids. It works because you care for them and their performances are authentic. Overall, Sanguchakkaram is a watchable horror comedy and make sure you take your kids along.
