Navarasa Review

Star Cast : Suriya, Vijay Sethupathi, Atharva, Prasanna, Yogi Babu, Delhi Ganesh
Director : Rathindran Prasad, Arvind Swami, Bejoy Nambiar, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Sarjun KM, Priyadarshan, Karthick Naren, Karthik Subbaraj, Vasanth

Navarasa, the anthology of nine emotions is out on Netflix and considering the kind of talents that came together, this one is largely disappointing. Among the nine episodes, four are not up to the mark, three are fairly engaging and the remaining two are strictly average. Navarasa is the film industry's effort to contribute to the welfare of its members, and that is indeed a laudable attempt.

Guitar Kambi Mele Nindru (Shringaara, Love)

Directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, Guitar Kambi Mele Nindru is in the director's zone and it is sad to see that he is getting repetitive once again. The charming Suriya and Prayaga Martin (a sure miscast) pair make us invest in the romantic conversation that goes on and on and on! The film is musically and romantically rich, might attract the teenagers who believe in magical love but for others, it ends up us yet another Gautham Menon film who fall in love at first sight!

Verdict: slow and tedious

Payasam (Emotion - Disgust, Bheebhatsya, Aruvaruppu)

Based on Thi Janakiraman's short story Paayasam, director Vasanth has beautifully adapted the literary work to screen with the seasoned actor Delhi Ganesh, who is in top of his form along with Rohini in a brief role.

The ancient Brahmanical culture and the ego tussle and jealousy that exist in the family is captured realistically.

Verdict: Above Average

Summer of 92 (Emotion- Haasyam)

Directed by Priyadarshan, this short is based on a true story. The film reminds you of Katha Parayumbol in Malayalam and its light-hearted humour where Veluswamy (Yogi Babu), now a popular actor and comedian, is invited to his village school for an event and he delivers a speech.Ramya Nambeesan, and Nedmudi Venu are there but they are let down by an underwhelming script and the last scene of the dog  is a saving grace that is sure to bring a smile

Verdict: Average

Edhiri (Emotion- Compassion, Karuna)

Directed by Bejoy Nambiar, Vijay Sethupathi, Ashok Selvan, Prakash Raj and Revathy have played the lead roles in this short. Written by Mani Ratnam, the film starts with a promising note but ends up dull without any high moment. Vijay Sethupathi and Revathy are good but there is nothing much to rave about in this one!

Verdict: Below Average

Peace (Emotion- Shaantha/Peace)

Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, Bobby Simha, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Master Tarun, and Sananth have played the lead roles in this short. Talking about the Eelam war, this short has an interesting premise and solid performance from Bobby Simha. But ends up as yet another film on Tamil Eelam that tries to capture the pain of Eelam Tamil but with a confused take.

Verdict: Average

Roudhram (Emotion- Anger, Roudra)

Arvind Swamy has made a dream debut with Roudhram. Set in North Chennai, the film hits you hard with the arresting performances of Pasanga Sreeram, Geetha Kailasam, and Rythvika.

Generally, we haven't seen and heard Santosh Sivan's visuals and AR Rahman's music in North Madras backdrop but Arvind Swamy has given a fresh colour and sound with the help of these two legends with the hard-hitting story of Selva and sharp writing of Madhan Karky.

Roudharam is easily one of the best shorts of Navarasa.

Verdict: Good

Project Agni (Emotion -Adbhutha, Surprise)

Directed by Karthick Naren, Arvind Swami and Prasanna play lead roles in this sci-fi drama. Project Agni is a high-concept film that needs your complete attention. This one also seem to be inspired by Hollywood science fiction fictions like The Matrix and Interstellar. Arvind Swamy and Prasanna have exhibited their best performance in this short that is sure to surprise you in the end. We expect Karthick to explore this one into a full-length film.

Verdict: Good

Inmai (Emotion -Fear)

Directed by R Rathindran Prasad, Siddarth ( is very good) and Parvathy Thiruvorthu ( After the episode in Aanum Pennum, the actress overacts) playing the lead roles in this short. Beautifully written and executed, Inmai is an interesting episode in Navarasa. A thriller revolving around the djinn, the film is about lust, feat, guilt and honestly, the film belongs to  Ammu Abhirami who plays the young Parvathy.

Verdict: Good

Thunintha Pin ( Emotion- Courage)

Directed by Sarjun KM, this Atharvaa, Anjali, and Kishore starrer is a damp squib. Written by Mani Ratnam, Thunintha Pin lacks punch with an average plot and below-par execution.

Verdict: Disappointing.
