NGK Review

NGK is a mixed bag, it's neither a Suriya film nor a Selvaraghavan film, it struggles to maintains the balance and only tests our patience. Particularly, the second half of the film which ends up as a solemn affair, uninspiring and manipulative.
The problem we see is that Suriya and Selvaraghavan seem to have tried to please each other and watered down the soul of the film. Known for his bold filmmaking style, Selvaraghavan tries too hard, even to justify the extra marital affair of Suriya and Rakul which leaves the audiences confused!! The forced duet song and the action scene inside the toilet, sticks out like a sore thumb.
NGK aka Nanda Gopalan Kumaran (Suriya) is an environmental engineering graduate but resigns his job and shifts his focus to organic farming. Youngsters in Kumaran's neighborhood also joins him and it upsets the local politicians.
NGK understands that to be an efficient do-gooder, he needs to be in politics, and so he joins as an assistant to a local MLA (Ilavarasu). From the grass-roots level, Suriya climbs up the ladder and becomes a big threat to the head of his own political party and he also plays a double game with the ruling party. Now, NGK's family and followers are in danger, can he save them and sit in the decorated CM chair?
The film's only solace is the charming Suriya, his flawless performance and screen presence. It's disheartening to see him in a plodding unbaked script like NGK. The usually dependable Sai Pallavi as NGK's wife Geeta is a big let down as she overacts and her performance looks artificial. Rakul Preet Singh as a PR strategist has a controversial role and she tries hard to make it look convincing.
Technically, Sivakumar Vijayan's visuals stands out, Yuvan Shankar Raja's music is strictly average and the editing is incoherent. Overall, NGK is an overtly manipulative political action drama in which Suriya shines but not the film!
