Bhaskar Oru Rascal Review

Star Cast : Arvind Swamy, Amala Paul, Raghavan, Nainika
Director : Siddique

Director Siddique is back to Tamil cinema with yet another remake, of his Malayalam movie titled Bhaskar the Rascal which had Mammootty and Nayanthara in the lead. But unlike Friends, Engal Anna and Kaavalan, Bhaskar Oru Rascal  falls flat both in comedy and sentiments.

Though it’s good to see Arvind Swamy comes out of his comfort zone and carry a light-hearted role with ease, the film itself fails to work with unrealistic stunts and crass presentation. The crime angle in the second half dilutes the comedy genre and only ends as a half-baked action film.

Akash (Raghavan) and Shivani (Nainika) are schoolmates, while the former is cool and composed, the latter is a brat. Interestingly, Akash and Shivani are completely opposite to their single parent—Bhaskar(Arvind Swamy) and Anu (Amala Paul).

Despite being a successful businessman, Bhaskar is known for picking up any fight that comes in his way and he is totally intolerant. Both Akash and his granddad (Nassar) often get embarrassed by Bhaskar’s behavior. On the other hand, Anu is matured and handle things with a level-headed approach. Akash and Shivani are attracted by the ideologies of Anu and Bhaskar respectively so they sketch a plan to unit their dad and mom so that all of them can become as one family.

As said earlier, the film’s biggest strength is Arvind Swamy and the single reason why the film is watchable. He plays to the gallery with a great swag and his comedy timing is just perfect. Amala Paul is no patch on what Nayanthara did in the original. The two kids Raghavan and Nanika are the shining stars of Bhaskar Oru Rascal, but beyond a point Nainika's character becomes irritating. Aftab Shivdasani as Amala's husband has nothing much to do. The comic trio Robo Shankar, Soori and Ramesh Kanna fail to evoke laughter with their predictable one-liners.

The first half of the film is slightly better with some good entertainment, thanks to the cute kids and Arvind Swamy’s characterization. But post-intermission, things do not work mainly because of the over the top stunts in the climax, forced twists and needless crime angle.

The music in Bhaskar Oru Rascal is passable and Vijay Ulaganath’s cinematography is strictly average. As pointed out earlier, the action choreography is outdated and does not match the current standards.

Overall, Bhaskar Oru Rascal is an average entertainer which would’ve worked in the late 90’s.
