Imaikka Nodigal Review

Star Cast : Nayanthara, Anurag Kashyap, Atharva, Rashi Khanna
Director : Ajay Gnanamuthu

Director Ajay Gnanamuthu's Imaikka Nodigalis a fairly engaging crime thriller based on serial killings in Bangalore. The film benefits from the exceptional actors who play the lead roles but has its own highs and lows as the run-time of the film itself is too long (170 minutes). Although the film isn’t perfect, Nayanthara remains dependably brilliant as the protagonist.

The psychotic killer, Rudra (Anurag Kashyap) kidnaps rich kids for ransom, takes the money but kills his victim. The case is being investigated by Anjali Vikramadityan (Nayanthara), a smart CBI officer and her team. The first half shows the cat & mouse game between the two, intercepted by the romance between Anjali's brother Arjun (Atharva) and Krithika (Rashi Khanna) back in Chennai. The lovers break-up and now the lover boy reaches Bangalore to win her back!

In Bangalore, Rudra kidnaps Krithika and frames Arjun as the cold blooded psycho. Can Anjali save her brother and unmask the mystery behind Rudra, who is an ex-police officer?

It’s an interesting premise but the script lacks urgency and the makers fail to build enough tension.
On the downside, the film compromises its intentions by resorting to too many songs, a lengthy back story, pointless romantic portions in the early half that slacken the pace, the logical loopholes in the action sequences and a hurried, unbelievable end. Lapses like these hurt what could have been a truly taut thriller.

Anurag Kashyap looks menacing and brilliant as the deadly psycho. The Lion vs hyena game is a fascinating idea and it perfectly syncs with the theme of the film. Nayanthara shines as the bold and daring CBI officer and she is the biggest strength of the film. Atharvaa plays his part competently but his character lacks the punch, while Rashi Khanna looks cute.

Pattukottai Prabhakar's sharp dialogues, especially the lines written for Anurag Kashyap and Magizh Tirumeni's dubbing is a big plus for the film. Technically, RD Rajasekar's striking visuals raises the production values of the film and Hiphop Tamizha 's pulsating background score elevates the film but the film needs urgent trimming and two songs can be easily taken off.

In the end, Imaikkaa Nodigal is well shot and skillfully executed, but what it needed was a tighter script with fewer holes.
