2.0 Review

Star Cast : Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar, Amy Jackson
Director : Shankar

Shankar's much hyped, much delayed 2.0 is the cocktail of his successful socially responsible vigilante films in the past and the masterpiece sci-fi entertainer Enthiran.

The scale is spectacular and the special effects are impressive in parts. But the core content is weak and the back story about Akshay Kumar character based on Salim Moizuddin Abdul Ali the famous ornithologist referred to as the "birdman of India" and the repeated fights in the climax are so needlessly stretched that you just wait for it to end.

The film begins with a suicide of an old man who hangs himself on top of a cell phone tower. Cut to the next shot, we see a group of robotic students visiting Dr. Vaseegaran's (Rajinikanth) to know about his latest humanoid Nila (Amy Jackson). On their way back, the cell phone of a youngster gets snatched away. In seconds, all the mobile phones in the city vanishes into thin air.

The Government officials calls for an urgent meet with a group of scientists, senior police officers and ministers. After thorough research, Vaseegaran suspects the existence of a fifth force and to handle it, he suggests to bring back the dismantled advanced robot Chitti. Although everyone is against Vaseegaran's idea, slowly they have no other option left, but to bring back Chitti.

Vaseegaran along with two robots, comes to know that an ornithologist Pakshi Rajan (Akshay Kumar) commits suicide after a losing battle against the system who play an important role in the death of many birds and mobile phone radiation. The rest of the film is all about how Chitti, Vaseegaran, 2.0, Nila and 3.O who is the surprise packet come together to defeat the mighty Pakshi Rajan!

The film's biggest strength is Superstar Rajinikanth who steals the show especially the second half as 2.0 and the Kutti Chitti. His natural swag and majestic screen presence is sure to be a treat for his fans. Though Rajinikanth looks fragile as Chitti (the CG doesn't work here), the actor is a scream as 3.0 aka Kutti chitti. The most talked about Akshay Kumar's negative role and make-up fails to evoke any big impact but the actor is earnest and does his best. Amy Jackson has screen space and is convincing as a pure machine. The rest of the cast like Sudhanshu Pandey and Kalabhavan Shajon are forgettable.

Technically, 2.0 is an exceptional film and has set a new benchmark for 3D films in India. The 3D effect is out of the world and the visual effects are on par with Hollywood films. Nirav Shah's camera work and Resul Pookutty's sound are noteworthy. Sadly A R Rahman's music is nothing to write about. Lack of songs and comedy is a major minus for this Rajinikanth film. Many scenes remind you of Hollywood films like Aliens and Terminator 2. The catchy Enthira Logathu Sundariye which was shot for a whopping amount comes in the end when title card is rolling!

Still, we recommend that you see 2.O for writer-director Shankar’s visualization, Rajinikanth’s screen presence and an earnest Akshay Kumar. It is exhausting, but this roller-coaster ride should be experienced.
