Silukkuvarpatti Singam Review

Star Cast : Vishnu Vishal, Regina, Yogi Babu, Sai Ravi
Director : Chella

If you are looking for a good laugh, then Silukkuvarpatti Singam (SpS) is sure to satisfy you.

After the serious psycho thriller Ratsasan, Vishnu Vishal is back with this comedy entertainer which is on the lines of his Velainu Vandhutta Vellaikkaran. The film doesn't have an out-of-the-world story, nor does it bank on a narrative. It is purely a dialogue-cum-(comic)-action based film. The characters are as crazy as it gets and the believability with which the actors portray ridicule is simply amazing.

The characters in SpS are all cool, light and easy. Sathyamoorthy (Vishnu Vishal) is a constable in Silukkuvarpatti village, who has the gift of the gab. He loves to roam with young girls, have a jolly good time or shake a leg with a local dancer Kanaga (Oviya). His prime job is to get food for his seniors at the police station. The only time he cannot control his anger is when someone disturbs him while eating his most favorite half-boiled egg!!!

Cycle Shankar (Sai Ravi) is a ruthless gangster, who is on the run from the top police officers in Chennai. He reaches Silukkuvarpatti to murder an ex-minister (Mansoor Ali Khan), but ends up being thrown into prison by Sathyamoorthy who has no clue about who the man is!  Shankar is tortured at the police station especially by Sathyamoorthy who is unaware that he is the dreaded gangster who is the most wanted man by the state police!

Shankar’s gang enters the police station and take him back but now the gangster wants to take revenge on Sathyamoorthy before he finishes off the ex-minister.

You know that some movies just strike a chord from the word go, and Silukkuvarpatti Singam is exactly that kind of film. It engages you not because it has an imaginative plot, which it doesn’t actually have but because the intention of the film is clear and sincere. Vishnu Vishal is perfect in the role of Sathyamoorthy. He throws a lot of energy and confidently holds the film together. His comedy timing and dance moves are crowd pleasing. SpS is not a film without flaws, as the rape jokes could have been avoided and few jokes falls flat.

Other than Vishnu, the film has a battalion of comedians including Yogi Babu who is a riot, Karunakaran (his mind voice is a scream),  Anandaraj, Lollu Sabha Manohar, Mansoor Ali Khan, and Singamuthu. Regina Cassandra has nothing to do, and she looks stiff and uncomfortable in the scenes where she needed to be casual and easy going. Oviya in a cameo does justice.

Leon James’ songs are quite good but the background score is not up to the mark. Editor Ruben has done a commendable job in packing the film with a perfect run time and end credits featuring Anandaraj will be a treat to Superstar Rajinikanth's fans!

To conclude, debutant director Chella’s Silukkuvarpatti Singam emerges a clear winner and much of that credit must go to its actors who pull out all stops to make it an enjoyable ride. Book your tickets, get your popcorn and have fun!
