Maari 2 Review

Star Cast : Dhanush, Sai Pallavi, Tovino Thomas, Robo Shankar, Vinoth, Varalakshmi, Kreshna
Director : Balaji Mohan

Dhanush’s Maari was neither a big hit nor raved by the critics yet the actor surprised everyone by announcing a sequel with Balaji Mohan who directed the original. Thanks to the average first part, we comfortably overlook the flaws in the sequel and in fact, it works well as a formulaic mass action entertainer.

Maari 2 begins from where the first part ended. Maari (Dhanush) still rules his area aided by his best friend Kalai (Kreshna). One thing which Maari hates in his profession is drug business but the opponent gang wants him to partner with them so that they can smuggle it without any hurdle.

However, Maari strictly opposes the idea. Meanwhile, there is Beeja aka Thanatos (Tovino Thomas) who seeks revenge against Maari for murdering his brother. When Beeja escapes from prison, he joins hands with Maari’s opponents and sketches a cunning plan to separate the latter from Kalai.

Beeja’s plan works well and he almost kills Maari and his girlfriend  Aarathu Aanandhi (Sai Pallavi). But they escape, gets married and settles in Tenkasi only to lead a normal life. But situation pushes Maari to return back to Chennai once again to finish off his nemesis.

As you read the plot of Maari 2, it has all masala ingredients. The first part largely depended on Dhanush’s characterization but the sequel is packed with friendship, romance, action, comedy, father-son (master Raghavan delivers a  superb performance once again) bond, and all other necessary ingredients. Particularly, the emotional angle is something we never expect in Maari franchise.

Though Dhanush is the show stealer with his trademark Maari swag and amazing screen presence, Sai Pallavi is a revelation here. Her audacious Chennai slang, brilliant dance moves, and tremendous performance in the emotional sequences lift the film. Dhanush and Sai Pallavi will make you dance for Rowdy Baby.

Tovino Thomas as Thanatos looks deadly in the first half but slowly turns a caricature and in the climax, he gets beaten up like any other villain. Director Balaji seemed to be in a hurry to end the film as the agenda was to show the climax fight with a shirtless Dhanush beating Tovino to pulp. Some of the silly lines like- Naan kettavanukku ellam kettavan and If you are bad, I am your dad may appeal to the masses as the film is packaged for B and C youth audiences.

The supporting cast like Varalakshmi, Robo Shankar, Vinoth and Kreshna  are all adequate and have nothing much to do. Technically, Yuvan Shankar Raja proves that he is the best when it comes to background score but songs are disappointing and not on par with the first part. Om Prakash’s cinematography in slow motion shots are impressive and he has also superbly captured the picturesque Tenkasi locales. Editor GK Prasanna has also done a neat job in packaging the film which has so many things to convey in 150 minutes.

Though the predictable story line, loud packaging and hurried climax are some of the flaws, Maari 2, may work for its target audiences.
