Petta Review

Star Cast : Rajinikanth, Vijay Sethupathi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Director : Karthik Subbaraj

The major problem with talented filmmakers is when they get an opportunity to direct a big hero. They try to balance their own style of film making and story-telling with the image of their matinee-idol. In most cases, these elite filmmakers end up creating a confused product. But with Petta, Karthik Subbaraj has packed a pleasing crowd puller that is a satisfying revenge drama with twists and turns.

Kaali (Rajinikanth) gets an ordinary warden job in a college hostel through a high profile recommendation. But Kaali gets the job only to settle an unfinished business with Singar Singh (Nawazuddin Siddiqui)in Uttar Pradesh. What is that unfinished revenge? Watch the film to know more...

Basically Karthik Subbaraj uses the Baasha formula of a gangster who is hiding his identity for some reason.

The first half of Petta is light and breezy with Rajinikanth's comic one liners and his energetic body language. The flashback episode with Rajini as Petta Velan is the highlight with an impressive twist in the end.The one serious complaint against this film could be that it is too long, lasting all of three hours.

Petta is an out and out Rajinikanth show. Despite looking aged, the actor impresses us with his impeccable energy level. Simran in a convenient romantic track with Rajini disappoint as she plays a silly decorative role. Trisha has nothing much to do though her character is important for the story to go forward. Solid supporting cast of Vijay Sethupathi and Nawazuddin are added attraction. Bobby Simha, Sanath , Sasikumar, Munishkanth and Megha Akash are just okay.

Technically, Anirudh Ravichander's music is the second hero of the film and Tirru's scintillating visuals is another biggest strength. Peter Hein stunts are refreshing and the gun shots sounds powerful. Overall, Petta is way too long at 2 hours and 52 minutes, and could have done with some serious pruning, especially in its first half. Nevertheless, it's engaging because it is Rajinikanth's most coherent film in recent years. It has a sliver of a story, and its heart in the right place.
