Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven Review

Star Cast : STR, Ramya Krishnan, Megha Akash, Catherine Tresa
Director : Sundar C

STR's Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven is a faithful remake of Telugu blockbuster Attarintiki Daredi  which itself a rehash of old MGR & NTR's family action entertainers where hero hides his identity to unite his family.

Aditya (STR) is a grandson of wealthy businessman Raghunanthan (Nassar) settled in Spain. He wants to reunite with his estranged daughter Nandini (Ramya Krishnan) who married a lawyer (Prabhu) without her dad's consent. Nandini is now happily settled with her husband and his extended family in Chennai.

Aditya hides his identity and reaches Chennai to meet his aunt, joins as a driver. He sorts out family issues and plans to marry Nandini's elder daughter Priya (Catherine Tresa) but as she is in love with another guy (Mahat), he moves on to the younger one Maya (Megha Akash). The rest of the film is all about how Aditya wins his aunt's heart and fulfill his granddad's wish...

STR who was delivered subtle roles in Gautham Menon’s Achcham Yenbathu Madamaiyada and Mani Ratnam’s Chekka Chivantha Vaanam is back to his mass avatar. The actor looks energetic in comedy, mouths punch dialogues and enjoys dancing for peppy numbers. Fans who missed the mass avatar of STR for long will surely enjoy his mannerisms and comedy. The last scene at the railway station where he breaks down in front on Ramya Krishnan proves that STR is an actor who can emote so well.

Ramya Krishnan is perfect foil as she carries her character with a great ease. Yogi Babu and Robo Shankar bring the roof down with their one liners. The two heroines Megha Akash and Catherine Tresa are used for comedy scenes and eye candy songs. While Catherine's role is limited, Megha Akash looks cute and bubbly. The other actors including Radha Ravi, Nassar, Suman and Prabhu are adequate.

The story is quite wafer-thin and predictable, while presentation and screenplay has Telugu flavor. The film largely depends on STR and the comedy department so if you are looking for fresh content, this film might disappoint you! The film moves at a decent pace in the first half but the second half drags at many places just like the original Telugu version.

Sundar C has used the core plot of Trivikram Srinivas and he has not tried to tamper with the core content to suit Tamil nativity. Technically, Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven looks glossy mainly because of Gopi Amarnath's but the much expected songs of Hiphop Tamizha has not worked big. Editor Srikkanth should have edited a few scenes in the second half as the pace is draggy.

Overall, Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven is an average family entertainer which has its own share of positives and negatives. Watch it if you are a fan of STR and trademark Telugu family entertainers!
