Comali Review

Debutant director Pradeep Ranganathan's Comali takes us back to the '90s and conveys a much needed message on humanity which lacks in the technology driven current generation.
Ravi (Jayam Ravi) is a happy-go-lucky school going student in 1999. Just when he was about to propose his sweetheart Nikitha (Samyuktha), he met up with an accident and goes into a coma. Sixteen years later Ravi wakes up to find that his sister got married to his close friend Mani(Yogi Babu) and everything has been technologically upgraded in Chennai city.
But Ravi's life stuck in the past, he struggles to adapt to the modern life. Another major setback is that his skill set doesn't match the modern day job demand. To overcome the financial setback of his sister's family, Ravi agrees to work as a security at a museum where he finds his family statue which is now quite popular in the country as it belongs to ancient kingdom. But a crooked politician (KS Ravi Kumar ) tells the media that the multi crore worth statue belongs to him and not to anyone else. Now, Ravi should find a way to get the statue and get back his sister's property which was pledged in a bank to take care of his medical expenses...
What really works in Comali is the nostalgic recreation of the '90s time zone. The way Ravi's character sees today's world provide a lot of comic moments to the film. As usual, Ravi has done a fantastic job and given his all to the film. After a long time, it's good to see Yogi Babu in a well written role and boy, the actor brings the roof down with his sharp comic one liners. Yogi Babu can be even declared as the second hero of the film. KS Ravi Kumar is another major advantage for the film but his scenes in the latter part of the second half tests our patience. Kajal Aggarwal neither looks glamorous not performs well in a poorly written role.
While the first half of Comali is super engaging, the second half goes in various directions and moves away from the core theme. The climax looks forced although the message on humanity stays relevant.
Technically, Hiphop Tamizha's songs and background score are big asset. Richard M Nathan's cinematography is functional while the editing department is adequate.
Overall, Comali is a watchable comedy entertainer for its core theme and the climax message.
