Dharmaprabhu Review

Star Cast : Yogi Babu, Naan Kadavul Rajendran, Ramesh Thilak
Director : Muthukumaran

Apart from Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikecei, none of the Tamil fantasy comedies have clicked in Tamil mainly because of shoddy writing and execution. Leading comedy actor Yogi Babu’s Dharmaprabhu in which he plays the lead title role is another addition to the genre, which disappoints.

Radha Ravi, the senior Yama (God of death) retires so his son (Yogi Babu) has become the immediate successor. Yama loga’s Chithragupta (Ramesh Thilak) is pissed off with the decision of Yama and cunningly plans to dethrone his son who has just become the king of their world. Chithragupta’s plan works when Yama junior visits the earth and saves the life of an innocent child along with a deadly politician(Azhagam Perumal). Now Lord Shiva orders Yama junior to kill the politician in seven days and rectify all the mistakes. Can the fun-loving Yama rectify his mistakes?

The problem with Dharmaprabhu is that all the actors, technicians including the director has not taken the film seriously. The Yama loga sets in Rajinikanth’s 1990 Tamil film ‘Athisaya Piravi’ looked more authentic and creative than Dharmaprabhu. Years later, we also got Karthik’s Lucky Man in which Goundamani played Yama and the film was superbly directed by Prathap Pothen.

When you make a film set in the backdrop of Yama loga, any modern day filmmaker would try to surpass the production value of these two films but Dharmaprabhu lacks grandeur and creativity. Except a few passable jokes on current politicians, none of the comedy scenes evoke laughter

When Vadivelu played Imsai Arasan 23 am Pulikecei, he did not use colloquial Tamil words. The actor actually worked hard on his comedy lines which were written in pure Tamil but Yogi Babu is super lethargic that he uses ‘Madras Slang’ in Yama loga and expects us to laugh! He body shames and insults everyone around him. The idea of casting actors like Naan Kadavul Rajendran as ‘Lord Shiva’ is another big joke on Indian mythology and on top of it Yogi Babu addresses him singularly.

There is nothing much to talk about the technical department as the entire film is substandard so to conclude, Dharmaprabhu cannot even be termed as poorly made TV fantasy comedy as the standards of daily soaps has been tremendously improved these days!
