Thalaivii  Review

Star Cast : Kangana Ranaut, Arvind Swamy, Samuthirakani, Thambi Ramaiah, Nassar
Director : Vijay

The much-hyped, magnum opus Thalaivii works to a large extent mainly due to the flawless performances from its lead actors, efficient writing, production design, and ambitious making.

As we all know, Thalaivii is the biopic of J Jayalalithaa but you can't tell her story without MG Ramachandran, her mentor, and Tamil Nadu's demi-god. Just like how MG Ramachandran sidelined his competitors, friends, and everyone around him till his last breath, Arvind Swamy, who essays the role of the Superstar and the iconic leader is the show-stealer of the film.

In fact, till MGR (MJR in the film)'s demise, we are unable to take our eyes off  Arvind Swamy. His mannerisms (even the lip movement is flawless) and his body language are a replica of Puratchi Thilagam. There is no Thalaivii without Thalaivar (Arvind Swamy), and the film belongs to him!

Kangana Ranaut is earnest and her hard work shows in every scene. She scores in the latter half of the film, especially in the emotional sequences and elevation episodes, which gives her the mass image. The last twenty minutes belong to her, the climax is a whistle-worthy moment.

In a film that is about two charismatic leaders, it's not an easy task to score but Samuthirakani, who plays RM Veerappan shines along with Arvind Swamy and Kangana. Nassar, Radha Ravi, Madhubala, Poorna, and Thambi Ramaiah have aptly played their parts in the limited screen time.

Technically, the in-form GV Prakash Kumar uplifts the film with his impressive songs and inspiring background score. Cinematographer Vishal Vittal provided the grandeur to the film. The costume (Neeta Lulla) and production designers have also replicated the period sequences with their efficient work.

Writers Vijayendra Prasad, Ajayan Bala, Madhan Karky, and Vijay have jointly delivered a compelling biopic. They have sketched a screenplay with known facts but the narration is super engaging, the fictional scenes also provided the much-needed cinematic high.

On the downside, if you are looking for some controversy, the downfall of J Jayalalithaa or her grey shades, Thalaivii doesn't have any of these, Director Vijay has rightly packaged the film as a crowd pleaser and also stood politically correct without taking any sides with many glorifying scenes for Jaya!
