Hazel Soan | British Figurative Painter | 1954

Hazel Soan is a British watercolour painter and was born in 1954. She was grown up in the United Kingdom and completed graduation with BFA honours in Fine Arts. She later studied painting at Camberwell and Leicester Art Colleges. She is an award winning artist and has been awarded the Holbrook Trust Prize form the Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery in the year 1976. She is such a talented painter that she started to earn her living within the first year of her graduation and her all paintings got sold within the very first hour of her art exhibition in London. She was advised by her college professors that “always have an exhibition on the horizon”. Since then she has exhibited near about 20 solo painting exhibitions. She has exhibited all over the world such as South Africa, Namibia, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.

She also got an advice from her professor to get a studio for herself so that she can work uninterrupted and  she was also advised to travel to feel good and get new ideas. Currently she has studios in Cape Town as well as in West London.

Hazel always loved writing and she started to share her thoughts and creativity via written medium. She began writing articles and books about painting in the 1990’s. She has till now written ten books and these are mostly on watercolours. Most of these are published by HarperCollins and she will very soon publish her 11th book.  Her articles are published regularly in magazines such as The Artist and Leisure Painter. She also writes for the bimonthly article for the leading Art Magazine for the past four years in Norway. She also works on commission and for the past 10 years she has been painted the Ritz Club Calendar for the Ritz Hotel in London. Many of her paintings have been in collection at many private and public places such as two huge murals which graces the atrium of the Durban Hilton in South Africa and also The Black Christ hanging in Nazareth House. She has participated in many art exhibitions such as Mall Galleries, Midland Open, Royal Academy and many other provincial galleries in USA and Tokyo. She has been travelling in Africa since the year 1981 and is currently sharing her life between the two places of London and Cape Town. She is hugely passionate about African Continent. Her love for paintings and Africa has taken her to various countries such as Zimbabwe, Malawi, Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. She mostly paints in watercolours and she paints larger paintings and works in her studio with oil and acrylic as a medium.

Main Themes of her art works are contemporary and figurative which are painted in watercolours and oils and mostly explores people, figures and shapes in her paintings and they all are surrounded by light. Check out some of her art works here:
