Spyder Review

Director : AR Murugadoss
Star Cast :
Mahesh Babu, Rakul Preet Singh, SJ Suryah, RJ Balaji, Bharath

Spyder is a typical brand AR Murugadoss entertainer. Just like Thuppakki and Kaththi, in Spyder too we have an intelligent hero on a mission, he has a happy family, does silly romance with an annoying heroine and all of a sudden faces an intriguing challenge from a deadly villain. The USP of Spyder is SJ Suryah, his psychotic mannerisms, inimitable dialogue delivery and a powerful flashback which are a treat to watch on the big screen.

Shiva (Mahesh Babu) works in intelligence bureau and his job is to monitor calls of general public and alert if anything sounds unusual. But Shiva uses this information to help people who are in danger and when a sixteen year old girl is afraid of being alone, he asks his constable friend to monitor her. But the next morning both of them are brutally killed and their body parts are cut into pieces! Now Shiva has to find the cruel animal behind the psychotic killings.

AR Murugadoss as usual excels with his racy screenplay, intelligent twists and turns, powerful hero and an even more powerful villain. But the director continues to weaken his strong script with lifeless romantic sequences and needless songs. Also, for a director who is fabulous in writing edge of the seat action thriller, he needs to understand that perfection is needed in song placements. Also tacky VFX cannot be accepted any longer as he makes only big budget films. Another big minus point of the film is the abrupt climax and the forced message in the end.

However, Spyder is a good entertainer, thanks to the engaging cat and mouse game between Mahesh Babu and SJ Suryah. The scenes where Mahesh gets to SJ Suryah is brilliant and the flash back portion is one of the film's major high points. The kid who acts as young SJ Suryah is a great find.

Mahesh Babu could not have asked for a better debut in Tamil, his dialogue delivery is flawless and the actor can do films in Kollywood too. Thanks to the strong impact of Thuppakki and Kaththi, Mahesh Babu reminds us of Vijay in many places but the actor shines in his own style and majestic screen presence. Rakul Preet Singh is annoying in the silly role, each and every scene of hers, slows down the screenplay. Bharath shines in the brief role while RJ Balaji doesn't have much scope to perform.

Harris Jayaraj is another hero of the film. Though the songs are needless and average, Harris lifts the film with his brilliant background score. Santhosh Sivan's visuals are top notch and Peter Hein's stunts are scintillating. But the VFX work is not up to the mark.

Overall, Spyder is a good watch except for the weak climax and forced message.
