Thuppakki Munai Review

Star Cast : Vikram Prabhu, Hansika, Vela Ramamoorthy, MS Baskar
Director : Dinesh Selvaraj

Vikram Prabhu impresses us by playing a no-nonsense, angry young man, an encounter specialist Birla Bose in Thuppakki Munai. The film’s director Dinesh Selvaraj has also conveyed a relevant social message on child abuse and sexual exploitation against women.

Birla Bose (Vikram Prabhu) is an encounter specialist in Mumbai who successfully executes more than thirty criminals in his career. Due to his job, Bose’s mother and lover Mythili (Hansika) leave him and even he gets suspended. But in order to encounter a Maoist Azad (Mirch Shiva) who allegedly raped a 15-year-old innocent girl Manjal, the department seeks his help. So Bose travels to Rameshwaram.

During his investigation, Bose finds that Azad is innocent and the real criminals are hidden by an influential gangster, businessman and politician (Vela Ramamoorthy). How Bose who believes that every bullet in his gun has the name of criminals who are deserved to die, saves the life of convicted innocent forms the crux of the story….

The plot and the circumstances are cliched and gives you a sense of deja vu, but it is the slick packaging and presentation that makes Thuppakki Munai an engrossing watch. Except for the forced romantic scenes in the beginning and the preachy dialogues of MS Baskar in the climax, the director has been able to present an edge-of-the-seat thriller.

The biggest advantage is  that the film doesn’t have any duets or songs to distract you and director Dinesh Selvaraj’s screenplay is good. There is a Mani Ratnam touch (Dinesh is an erstwhile associate of Mani Ratnam) in the takings especially the top angle shots and presentation. The Rameshwaram locations and the rich production values arrests you.

Performance wise, Vikram Prabhu shines as the encounter specialist. There is no unwanted heroism and it’s good to see him accepting such script-driven characters. His salt 'n' pepper look and intense eyes are a major plus. Hansika doesn’t have much scope to perform here and is there in few scenes but is convincing and looks lovely. Vela Ramamoorthy is menacing and MS Baskar has once again proved his versatility. Mirchi Sha as Azad is a good find.

Technically  L.V Muthu Ganesh’s background score and Anbariv’s stunts are impressive for an action thriller. Overall, Thuppakki Munai is a watchable action thriller. Watch it for Vikram Prabhu and the socially relevant message conveyed in the climax.
