The History Behind Our Selfie Obsession

It’s easy to bemoan millennials for bringing selfies to the mainstream, but our tendencies towards narcissism and documenting ourselves through selfies date back hundreds of years.

The first selfies were taken when humans didn’t even have cameras. Self-portraits are considered a form of proto-selfies because they were the only way to showcase how we adored our lovely faces. Of course, there weren’t filters available and only artists had the ability to enjoy a good self-portrait, but the world changed once self-portraits became popular.

Fast forward a few hundred years. By the 20th century, cameras were available to the masses, which means the average person could document pretty much anything they wanted. But the technology of the 1900s didn’t exactly enable self-obsession. Cameras were too heavy to take a photo of yourself on the go unless you had a tripod ready (or an advanced camera lens).

The advent of the webcam made it easier to put our whole faces into the frame without issue, but really, who wants a low-pixel image unless you’re playing old-school video games? With the arrival of front-facing cameras, fancy smartphones and social media galore, the tools are in our favor and we can take as many selfies as we want. Believe me, Van Gogh would be jealous.

Cat Naps: Should You Share A Bed With Your Feline Friends?

As a proud cat owner, I have been guilty of falling asleep with my pets on more than one occasion. But should we share the bed with our furry friends?

The main reason cats shouldn’t be in the bed is that felines are nocturnal animals. This means that unless you do something about it, they’ll be up and about all night, making sleep nearly impossible. Besides, they’ll have more time to stare at you for hours on end. Not my favorite part about sleeping with Whiskers!

At night, bored cats can be annoying and downright aggressive: Suddenly, our feet become the best toy and every movement causes excitement — and a few scratches — from our best friends. To avoid this, we need to emulate how our cats would behave in the wild: hunt, catch, eat and rest. As our homes aren’t exactly forests with prey waiting to be caught, cat toys are the next best thing: Play with your cat until it’s tired and panting a little, then let them catch the toy.

As they gloat, give them their food. Afterward, you’ll have a sleepy cat in your hands that will be out all night. Do this before every meal and you are guaranteed to have a well-behaved cat 24/7. Easy peasy!

Impress Your Office With These Microsoft Excel Tricks

Knowing how to use Microsoft Excel in the workplace is pretty much expected these days, and even though most of us have working knowledge, it’s safe to say we stick to a few basic commands for most of our needs.

For me, Excel is one of those programs that I haven’t mastered — I’d make charts by hand. It turns out it’s hard to be an effective office worker without knowing your way around Microsoft Excel, and my ignorance has caused me more than one desperate Google search minutes before a presentation is due. This infographic shows you how to avoid unneeded stress and become an Excel expert.

If your day job involves numbers, Excel can make your life much easier before a big meeting. Even if you struggle to make a bar graph like me, today’s infographic provides enough context that you’ll be a master in now time. Whether you choose to use conditional formatting to automatically highlight certain values or using the forecasting feature to help guess future outcomes, you’ll become the hero of your office.

Again, this isn’t only for Excel experts. If you’ve reluctantly worked with Excel without trying to really learn the program, today’s infographic will make your life that much easier. Say hello to impressive presentations!

The Top 40 Imports And Exports In The U.S.

There’s a long-running joke that everything in the U.S. is made in China. While it’s said in jest, it does raise an interesting question: What does the rest of the world buy from the United States? Find out in today’s infographic about the top imports and exports in the country.

This infographic calculates the top imports and exports by both value and weight, so you get an idea of the heaviest and most expensive items. Many of our beloved electronics are imported from elsewhere, and we also get printers, car parts and sweaters from neighboring nations.

With so much of our staples coming from foreign countries, what could the rest of the world want from us? Americans export food items like poultry and sugar, and American-made cars are still in high demand overseas. Even though much of our car production has been outsourced, the U.S. is still a big player in the automobile industry. Other top exports include scrap paper and metal, plastic and hay.

Have you ever considered the journey your package took to get to your doorstep? It turns out the vast majority of packages are delivered by old-fashioned trucking, not water, rail or air.

The Ultimate Guide On How Often You Should Clean Your Stuff

How do you decide when to clean certain items? It’s easy to do laundry once you run out of clothing, but how do you know when to clean your oven or the windows?

Today’s infographic might make you feel a wee bit unsanitary, but don’t worry — most of us aren’t adhering to these guidelines in our daily lives. Who knew you could vacuum a mattress — let alone that you should be doing it every six months? There is good news for the lazy, though: Your jeans only have to be washed every four to five wears, so don’t feel bad about leaving them in a heap on the floor.

Some of these targets seem plain unrealistic, but it all depends on your lifestyle. Washing your car once every week will definitely get tiresome, but it could be worth it if your car gets dirty really quickly. One of the big shockers on this list: Our purses and wallets carry E.Coli, the bacteria associated with human feces, so those need to be scrubbed often as well.

How To Reduce Your Chance Of Hoverboard Injury

Personal electric vehicles, or “electric rideables,” are as fun as they are dangerous. Personal electric transporters come in a variety of compact designs and can go 5-15 mph, while going up to a distance of 20 miles with one charge. Some examples include electronic scooters and unicycles, electric skateboards and hover boards. While these machines are relatively cheap and better for the environment than a traditional vehicle,  widespread reports of serious injury, fatal accidents and exploding batteries are alarming.

In particular, the hoverboard is of concern. The hoverboard is immensely popular but is under limited regulation, and it’s caused 26,000 emergency room visits in the last two years, according to a study in the journal Pediatrics.

Most injuries occur to young boys, and the most common electric rideable injuries involve bone fractures and severe contusions. Before you or a loved one hops on an electric hoverboard, skateboard, scooter, or unicycle, read the instruction manual and do a pre-trip inspection. These simple steps are often skipped, but they can keep you out of harm’s way.

Furthermore, wear safety gear like a helmet, avoid rides during bad weather, and only navigate flat land without any debris. In addition, remember that rideables require self-balancing, so practice in a safe place before you hit the streets, and always maintain a sensible pace when motoring through heavily-trafficked areas.

While electric rideables are tough to learn, with some practice, they become an extension of you and are a 21st century spin on the traditional bicycle. By remembering a few safety measures and riding defensively, you can have a great time and save money on gas while staying out of harm’s way.

Famous Personality Types

Personality and self assessment tests are a good exercise to run through when you need a bit of direction. Keep in mind, they can’t definitively tell you who you will become and what you’ll be best at.  Only you can figure that out.  But being able to shine some light on the best path or direction has its appeal.  These tests might bring to light something you’ve missed.

Now unfortunately, when I took this test I was tied between two personality styles. A person with more than just one personality type (this doesn’t make you a crazy person) gives you different viewpoints that show you can exhibit more than one way of thinking.

I can look at the following infographic to see what I have in common with some of the most iconic people in the world.  That being said, I don’t believe that I will ever be the president or sing a hit song that brings tears to people’s eyes.

What is great about this infographic is that you can study these real life successful people. You can recall a specific scene the actor was in, or a famous speech that was given in history to derive a little energy out of your results. As the saying goes, if they can do it, so can you.

The State Of The Blogging Industry In 2018

It seems like everyone’s launching a blog these days, but blogging has now been around since the 1990s. While the early days were a little bit shaky and uncertain, the blogging industry has managed to become a powerhouse that’s growing at a rapid rate. Today’s infographic focuses on last year, but there’s still a lot to learn.  The U.S. alone has over 30 million bloggers, which captures almost 30 percent of the market. To give you perspective, the next biggest blogging country is the UK with 7 percent of the world’s bloggers.

When blogging first emerged, it was usually a tool used by people with passion projects and hobbies. However, as blogging became ubiquitous, opportunities for revenue arrived. Those who got in early lucked out, as the blogging industry is nearly oversaturated with millions of people competing for sponsorships. But if you do get in the game now, be prepared to spend a lot of time on your website — the average blogger spends more than three hours crafting the perfect post.

And if you’re a business owner who doesn’t have a blog, you may want to reconsider. According to this research, business owners see a 126 percent increase in lead generation if they blog about their industry.

8 Ways To Conquer Self-Doubt

Making decisions is hard. So is sticking by them and doing what’s best for ourselves. These things shouldn’t be difficult, but for many of us they are, and they can lead us to second guess ourselves.

More often than not, when self-doubt comes a-knocking, we answer as quickly as possible and accept whatever is being handed to us from the other side of the door. So how do we get out of the cycle of self-doubt? We can’t eradicate it completely, but we do have the power to respond in confidence when it arises.

Whether it’s getting to know ourselves better and figuring out what triggers self-doubt, to practicing self-compassion, there are little things we can do that make a big difference. And when it comes to ignoring the critical voices of others, we could all use a bit more practice.

The key is to get to a place where we no longer put all our trust in the opinions of others and instead we make decisions that make us happy. This infographic has smart tips to help you overcome that pesky self-doubt once and for all.

How To Tell Whether A News Source Is Credible

Decades ago, the only people we got our news from were trusted evening newscasters. Anyone can post news online now, which leads to an abundance of sensationalized and downright fake news stories. To stay properly informed, follow these steps to learn how to vet online news articles.

The most important component of any news article is the headline. Many can be misleading and inaccurately misrepresent the article, so read the entire article and not just the headline to get an idea of what is actually going on. Also, if a headline sounds too outrageous to be true, it often is, so be alert.

Credibility is also important. The author, news outlet, and quoted sources all contribute to the trustworthiness of a news article. If the article comes from an unfamiliar source, doesn’t list an author, or doesn’t have sources, then you should do your research before sharing. Even reputable publications make mistakes, and you should try to find a second source to confirm any information you encounter.

Finally, make sure the news source is recent and the URL looks legitimate. A fake news site may misspell the name of a reputable publication to seem more reliable. If you’ve followed these steps, you can call yourself a news detective!

The Bona Fide Benefits of Imitation Leather
a

I’ve been a vegetarian for 20 years, and I steer clear of leather as a result. Admittedly, it has been a challenge at times, but in the last few years, finding a decent meal and durable faux leather has become increasingly easier. Imitation leather is sometimes thought of as an inferior fabric, but the materials used to make imitation leather fabric are widely available. It is usually made from a high-quality, vinyl-based or plastic material. It can be used in all of the ways that leather is used while being more affordable and cruelty-free.

In particular, polyurethane, a polymer which combines the strength of rigid plastics and the elasticity of rubber, creates a perfect leather look and feel without the price or animal byproducts that come with genuine leather.

The benefits are numerous. For example, polyurethane “leather” requires less maintenance than real leather because it is stain and fade-resistant and maintains a consistent color even in the worst weather conditions. Furthermore, it can be cleaned with a towel and warm water if it gets dirty. Unlike genuine leather, the synthetic version does not retain moisture, so it does not warp or crack.

So, whether you are looking for leather seat covers, a comfortable pair of hiking boots, or inexpensive upholstery for your car or your home-decorating project, artificial leather is your affordable and low-maintenance alternative to genuine leather.

The Best Beard Style For Different Face Shapes

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder — but if you’re wanting to up your chances of being considered attractive, today’s infographic is for you. If you don’t have a beard, you may not realize they can transform your face shape. You just need to know how to use facial hair to your advantage. Men, think of a beard like makeup. Ideally, you’ll add contrast and dimension to your face without looking unnatural or distracting. If you have a long face, a square face or even no chin, there’s a beard for you here.

Facial hair won’t take care of itself, so if you want to keep it looking great, you’ll need to do some upkeep from time to time. This includes washing with shampoo, as well as applying some conditioner a couple times a week and trimming it from time to time, even if you’re letting it grow long.

A well-trimmed beard can make you a feel a lot more handsome and rugged, especially once you’re aware of your face shape and what flatters you best. If you want to look more masculine, go for a trim that will enhance your strong. If you want to make your face appear bigger, skip the beard altogether and go for a clean shave. Don’t be afraid to get creative!

How To Make Sure Your Kids Are Money-Savvy

As a parent, you do everything you can to prepare your children for the real world.  But are your kids money-savvy and knowledgeable about finances?
Beyond receiving an allowance, many of us didn’t receive many lessons about money from our parents. It’s one of those topics that can become taboo in many families. Whether it’s because of a tight budget, religious reasons or pure unwillingness, American families avoid discussing money with their children, even when they grow older.

To be honest, “money talk” shouldn’t be limited to a piggy bank and a vague recommendation to save for the future. Being financially educated involves knowing not only that you should save, but how to manage money wisely and stick to a budget. As an adult, you can even share your own mistakes with your children in the hopes that it helps them.

It shouldn’t be too complicated to teach your children financial literacy. In fact, you can turn daily activities into learning opportunities for every member of the family. Grocery shopping, for example, can be a great learning experience if you and your kids talk about why you shop as you do. What do you consider a splurge? Which items do you buy generic, and which are name-brand? The possibilities are endless, and once you’re on the lookout for them, you’ll see them everywhere!
