The Dangerous Side Of Biking

Biking is one of the most popular activities worldwide. In fact, in some countries like Denmark, it has become the main vehicle for transportation, surpassing cars and even the subway.

Copenhagen folks ride around 2 miles per day, and people use their bikes for pretty much every trip under 4 miles.
Worldwide, biking trends are on the rise. In the US, bike trips rose from around 2 billion in 2000 to around 4 billion in 2009.

Among people in the US, men are more likely to ride a bike than women. This isn’t the case in northern Europe, where pretty much everyone bikes.

In the US, women claim they’re concerned by their safety and that keeps them from riding more often. Women with children drive around 20% more than men, probably hauling their kids to a myriad of activities: this makes it more difficult to ride a bike. In Denmark, they have those long family bikes, but they’re still a rare occurrence in the US.
Women’s concerns about bike safety are well founded: in 2009 bicyclists deaths represented around 2% of all traffic fatalities.

Legislation changes have been made in order to protect bikers around the US, making the streets a safer place. If you want to know more, check today’s infographic! It’s all about bike safety. Enjoy the ride!

The Chilling Guide To The End Of The World

All of the typical threats to humanity found in dystopian movies are on today’s infographic, from evolved diseases that create sweeping plagues to climate change, and even vengeful robots. The difference? These threats are real. What constitutes a real threat to humanity?

Any mass incident on the horizon that results in a collapse of civilization and leads to a drastic decrease in global human population for an extended period, along with the crash of political, economic, and social systems.

The following is a list of the most pressing issues that could sweep away humanity in the next 100 years, unless we reverse course and take action:

Artificial Intelligence: Machines that develop a primal consciousness and unlimited intelligence might look at humans as a threat to themselves or the environment as a whole. With the ability to shut down the resources we need to survive, AI could eventually end us all.
Extreme Climate Change: Climate change could create a nightmare of famine, mass migration, and destructive weather events like relentless hurricanes, tsunamis, flooding, and sweeping fires.
Global Pandemic: An unknown infectious disease could spread rapidly because of large metropolitan areas and our advanced transportation network.
Other risks to humanity involve synthetic pathogens that could be engineered by a terrorist group or nation, self-replicating nano-machines that could consume all of the Earth’s biomass, a nuclear war that creates a nuclear winter or destroys the ozone layer, or a significant asteroid impact.

Issues with AI, climate change, and infectious disease must be stomped out on a local level. Large nations and their governments are subject to lobbying and corruption, but individuals and groups can work with community leaders to regulate their municipalities to ensure a safer future for our planet and its guardians, as a whole.

A Fabulous Foodie’s Ultimate Guide To Eating In Rome

When I think of Italy, I instantly think of their cuisine. The pasta, the desserts, the wines. Everything about Italy’s culinary delights makes me want to experience it for myself. Do you have your plane ticket ready? Here’s your guide to eating like a local in Rome.

Italy is known to have the best pasta in the world. If you want an authentic pasta dish from Rome, you must try Amatriciana pasta. It’s a combination of fusilli pasta, tomato sauce, guanciale (or bacon), and pecorino romano that’s to die for. After you enjoy your pasta, treat yourself to cool cone of Gelato. San Crispino is your ideal destination for the sweet treat. This is the same location featured in the hit novel, “Eat, Pray, Love.”

Alongside Italy’s food comes its food-related activities. If you love the pasta, make it yourself! Attend a pasta making class at Grano and Farina Scuola di Cucina. You should accompany that pasta making class with a wine tasting at L’Angolo Divino. It’s a perfect combination of activities to satisfy your palette.

Your dining experience will change tenfold when you discover all that Italy has to offer. From the excellent cuisine to the sweet treats, to the various wines, Italy’s food will always leave you wanting more.

Extreme Party Disasters Fueled by Facebook

What qualifies as a party disaster? Running out of booze? 20 people using the same bathroom? Destroying a 1.5 million-dollar house? Planning a gathering readies you for the small challenges. Thinking ahead, like preparing the cake a couple of days beforehand, or choosing your outfit the previous night can make a world of difference in your stress levels. However, there are various types of party disasters that no preparation or to-do list can prevent.

Today’s party disasters can be classified as real cataclysm, changing these people’s lives forever. Ok, maybe not THAT intense, but you get the drill. If you fancy having some friends over and enjoying a couple of drinks, then be careful who you let into your home. In fact, be prepared for the worst! From ruining mansions to drunk teenagers, parties can quickly get out of hand without you even noticing.

After seeing these horror stories, I’m a firm believer in separating parties and the world wide web. Mainly because it’s one thing to host a small gathering of friends and family to have a drink and celebrate life whereas letting a dozen strangers overrun your house can wreck it. Of course, I’m nowhere near THAT popular, but there’s always the risk, ya know?

The Makings Of Prizewinning Books

Men are from Mars and women are from Venus is a commonly held belief.  It might even apply to reading.

This Goodreads infographic covers 95 books from 2000 to 2017 that won prizes, including Pulitzers, National Book Awards, and Man Booker prizes.  Using an analysis with the help of 40,000 active members, Goodreads found a few interesting patterns.

Men and women were most likely to read books authored by someone of their own gender and rated the works about the same.   However, when it came to prize-winning novels, these books were still most likely written by a man and featured a male protagonist – not unlike walking into a museum where the artists exhibited are predominantly male. I do wonder about one thing: how do books written under a pseudonym of the opposite sex fit into the picture?

Women read more prize-winning books and were more critical of the works they picked up but only by a slight margin. In the end, it is good to see the divide narrowing and readers being open to trying more and more of what is out there. Reading, after all, is fundamental.

How To Choose Colors That Even Soothe Babies

When faced with color choices, people instinctively react in relatively predictable ways.   Color psychology has interesting roots and has benefited from ongoing research.  When painting a nursery, parents often have a theme or color scheme in mind. But, did you know that colors affect mood, energy, and sleep?    The perfect paint colors do more than match the rug and accessories.

Warm colors, like reds, oranges, and yellows stimulate children. These energy-creating tones are perfect for imaginative play, but not so great for bedtime. Whereas cool colors, like blues and greens, are known for their calming effects. However, they often end up feeling dull or dreary.

Make the most out of your color scheme by using your colors wisely. If you’re in love with bright, warm colors, then start with an accent wall. Too much color in a room will keep an infant awake. Instead, try bringing in warm tones with accessories, such as chair cushions or a colored closet organizer.

If you want cool colors and neutrals, then keep it from feeling boring by choosing lighter shades to compliment your darker tones. Add a pop of color by way of accessories or a well-placed piece of furniture. Cool colors are perfect for bedtime, just make sure you have enough fun accessories to keep the room upbeat for baby.

Choosing paint for an infant’s room doesn’t have to be hard. Even if you have a theme in mind or colors that you’re in love with, remember to think about your baby’s needs. Pick colors that help baby get the best sleep followed by a stimulating day of play.

20 Fundamental Elements Of Design

Design is a fascinating field, but it can be overwhelming for a beginner. Still, aspiring designers have to start somewhere, and the principle elements are a good place to start.
Graphic design expertise is not learned overnight, which is why many choose to hire graphic designers.  Designers have to juggle a number of elements to make everything come together.

One of the most important parts of an illustration is the line work. Lines help direct the viewer’s eye to the illustration. Lines create an emphasis on the subject that the artist illustrated. Crisp lines on any subject matter can give the illustration movement. If you want a clean illustration, line work is essential.

Very often, you’ll have to rely on texture to make your design memorable. Texture is the surface on which you are drawing. It gives your design tactility and depth, but make sure you don’t overdo it.

Another key principle of design is layering, also known as hierarchy. Layering can add dimension to an illustration and create a focal point in it. With hierarchy, you can scale your design, bring line work to certain elements of it, and add color details without messing up other elements.

If you want to get into the world of design, this infographic can help you get started. Learning these principles will give you everything you need to make the cleanest, most detailed illustrations. And while we’re on the subject of drawing, why not check out what doodling says about your personality?

How To Evaluate Whether Your Job Suits You

If you are interested in psychology, you are likely familiar with Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. At the base of this pyramid is survival,  which is essentially the need for food, water, shelter and sleep. When these needs are met we can focus on safety and security. Next is belonging, the need for friendship and intimacy. If these needs are satisfied, we feel comfortable enough to satisfy our needs to feel important and master new skills. At the very top of this pyramid is self-actualization.

If you’ve ever worked a job you hated, then this infographic may help you think about why you weren’t so engaged with your work.  It reframes a job according to our fundamental psychological needs.

When stuck in survival mentality, employees work only for the money and constantly watching the clock to see when their shift ends.  Work doesn’t inspire them, and they leave as soon as they find a better opportunity. Next, at the security stage, employees are still not engaged. They feel safer than someone stuck in survival but are still not interested in contributing as much as possible to their job.

At the belonging stage, employees are almost engaged. They take more pride in their work but may leave if tempted. When employees feel like a vital part of their organization they finally reach the stage of importance and engagement. When employees are highly engaged, they care more about what they can do for others than what the company can do for them.

If you are stuck at a low level in the pyramid, consider negotiating for a higher salary or changing careers.  After all a job is a major part of life, so make sure it aligns with your needs.

How To Never Miss A Deadline Again

Too much to do, too little time. If that sounds like you, then here are some tricks nailing your deadlines every time.

For starters, know thyself. If you’re terrific at design, then you’ll finish a new logo in a couple of hours. On the other hand, if you’re barely starting to understand how Photoshop works, then don’t assume you’ll be finishing it in a pinch. Plan according to your abilities.

Another thing to remember: stay on top of your deadlines. That means knowing exactly how many days or hours you have until you need to deliver.

Mark the days on a calendar, put reminders on your phone or add sticky notes to the sides of your laptop. Use whatever process alerts you to deadlines.

Finally, understand what is needed of you. If it’s an essay, how many pages do you need? How many sources? What questions does it need to answer? If it’s a project or a campaign: how will success be measured? Be sure everyone is on the same page about the goals and steps to get there. This will make it easier to meet your deadline without stressing about it.

Pit Bull Prejudice: Are They A Public Health Threat?

Pit bulls are perhaps the most controversial dog breed around the world. These pups are exposed to unfair stereotypes that result in a negative reputation for the breed. In my experience, my pit bull has done nothing but show love and affection. So why do pit bulls get such a bad rap?

According to the American Temperament Test Society, pit bulls passed with an 87% passing rate. Although their score is high on the scale, dog owners believe that pit bulls are unruly and dangerous. The implicit bias from outside sources such as the media contribute to the negative opinion that dog owners have on pit bulls. For example, over 200 news outlets covered a report of a pit bull attack in 2007. In that same year, only one news article broadcasted a story about a Labrador attack. Why was the pit bull attack so much more important?

People think that when a pit bull attacks, it’s all because of the breed’s temperament. What they don’t know is that a variety of factors can be the cause for a pit bull to attack. 87% of pit bull attacks had no one to intervene while the attack occurred. 84% of pit bulls unneutered which causes a massive shift in behavior. Pit bulls are like a book, you can’t judge them by their cover.

The truth is, pit bulls are like any other dog. They need a little TLC just like your chihuahua or golden retriever. These dogs aren’t a public health threat. They’re here to make you smile, make you laugh, and make you feel loved. Now do me a favor. If you have a pit bull, give them a pet for me.

The Financial Advice Millennials Need To Hear

Millennials boarded the world ship during the Great Recession, and they witnessed their parents lose a ton of money in the stock market and real estate. Therefore, like children who grew up during the Great Depression, the down economic times triggered more conservative financial notions than the generation before them, Generation X.

The youngest millennials, ages 20 to 30 years old, have struggled through a difficult job market. They also accumulated hefty student loan debt, have a mistrust of investments and real estate, and do not have much expendable income. In fact, nearly half of millennials admit to “treading water” financially, and one missed paycheck would spell doom for them. Millennials are uncomfortable investing and less likely than other generations to invest in the stock market.

On the other hand, they are committed to financial independence and are optimistic about the future.

There are basic steps that millennials, and any generation, should take to better position themselves financially as they settle into homes and start families:

Avoid credit card offers, and if you decide to get one for emergency situations, pay the balance every month to reduce interest fees, especially if you have student loan debt. In other words, do not get into more debt.
Open a savings account and commit a portion of each paycheck to the account. Instead of a dollar amount, use a percentage, so that when you get a raise, the amount you deposit automatically increases.
Get comfortable with investing. Find a sound financial adviser and start with small, fail-proof stock investments that are sure to make money, though not much.
Maintain a budget, and if your lifestyle has to change to accommodate it, then downsize your wants, focus on your needs, or make more money to finance the personal life you want.
Moreover, embrace your earning power by showing initiative and being aggressive as you pursue higher-income employment with excellent benefits. These jobs will NOT find you; you have to get out there and do the work. If it helps, imagine your future and create goals to get there. While retirement funds and insurance are boring subjects, they will eventually help you find a sustainable future.

Wardrobe Organization 101

Mornings can be chaotic. If you’re choosing an outfit from a messy closet, then you’ve got morning mayhem! Check out today’s tricks to make your wardrobe routine, and your life, so much smoother.

A properly organized wardrobe can save you an insane amount of time and energy. Can you imagine that fantastic feeling of getting ready in under ten minutes? Yep, that’s possible if you have your closet in order.

I haven’t checked the exact time, but I lose precious minutes sorting through outfits before going out. If I have to change more than once, then I’ll be spending way more time swimming in a pile of clothes, screaming I have “nothing to wear!” I know for a fact that I’m not the only one.

Even if isn’t spring anymore, it’s always a good time to get organized. The first step is purging the closet. We get attached to some items we don’t use: that hideous gift you can’t part with, a pair of jeans that don’t fit anymore, or our favorite shirt stained with red wine. It’s time to let them go. If you haven’t cleaned that stain, then you won’t do it. If you haven’t worn that sweater, you never will. Let go of the things that don’t spark joy, the things that you don’t use or that will be better in someone else’s home.

Find your system, reduce your clothing items and get organizing.
