Madura Veeran Review

Star Cast : Shanmuga Pandian, Samuthirakani, Vela Ramamoorthy, ‘Mime’ Gopi, Meenkashi
Director : PG Muthiah

Maduraveeran is a crisp authentic rural action entertainer filled with communal clash, betrayal, family sentiment and the pride of Tamil culture. What really worked in favor of the film is director Muthaiah’s decision to treat the film without glorifying any community and in fact, his hero Shanmuga Pandian has also delivered a subtle performance.

Rathinavelu (Samuthirakani) is a sensible village leader, who tries to conduct Jallikattu to unite two rival communities. But unfortunately Rathinavelu gets murdered and his wife goes to Malaysia along with her son Durai (Shanmugha Pandian). Twenty years later, Durai comes to the village saying that he would love to marry a girl from the native but his real intention is to bring back the bravery sport ‘Jallikattu’ and to find out the murderer of his dad. Will our hero succeed in these two missions?

The film’s biggest strength is Samuthirakani and to be honest, he is the leading man of the film. Samuthirakani owns the screen in the major portions of the first half and once again proves that he is the perfect for an upright angry young man role. In his first film ‘Sagaptham’ Shanmugapandian had gravity-defying stunts and loud punchlines but surprisingly he has given a convincing performance in Maduraveeran.

Although Shanmuga Pandian has to shed his weight and improve in his expressions, he is good in action sequences and if he continues to select right scripts like Maduraveeran, he can get the place of his dad Vijayakanth in Tamil film industry. The other supporting actors including Vela Ramamoorthy, ‘Mime’ Gopi and PL Thenappan are adequate for their characters. In terms of the screenplay, scenes from the real Jallikattu protest looks forced but it would work with the youngsters and masses.

Santhosh Dhayanidhi’s songs worked big time with the visuals, his background score is also perfect for a rural entertainer and the film’s director PG Muthiah has also excelled in providing stellar visuals. The runtime of Maduraveeran is just over 120 minutes, which is another biggest advantage of the film. But on the downside, because of the crisp duration, we feel that more detailing to the characterizations would have given a better movie watching experience.

Overall, Maduraveeran is surprisingly a good village entertainer with minor flaws.
