Thaanaa Serndha Kootam   Review

Star Cast : Suriya, Ramya Krishnan, Suresh Menon, Keerthy
Director : Vignesh ShivaN

First things first! Thanks Vignesh ShivN for giving back the Suriya we all loved. And anyone who is tired and disappointed with Suriya's unwillingness to step out of his comfort zone of mass action loud masala potboilers, will have reason to be his fan again.

It’s Suriya's committed performance, that keeps you invested in the narrative and the fascinating characters etched out brilliantly by Vignesh. The film opens in a smart manner with nothing associated in a big star movie. Thaana Serndha Koottam (TSK) is the love child of a new-age realistic filmmaker and Tamil cinema's most loved popular star.

The first half is fast paced and is loosely based on director Neeraj Pandey's Special Chabbis about a group of con-men who poses as CBI officers in the eighties and does daring heists across the country through fake raids. Vignesh has only taken the core plot of Special Chabbis and changed a lot of things to serve us a crackling entertainer.

Natchinarku Iniyan (Suriya) wants to become a CBI officer and his friend (Kalaiyarasan) aspires to become a cop but corrupt officers in the respective departments shatter their dreams. Suriya picks four innocent yet loyal candidates (Ramya Krishnan, Senthil, Sathyan, and Shivasankar) to form a fake CBI team, they conduct raids to bring out black money and silently use it to clean the system. To track down this team, Government appoints an expert Kurunjinathan (Karthik) who has to work with a corrupt CBI chief Utthaman (Suresh Menon) and a young cop Vetri (Nandha). But our smart four-member gang is always one step ahead!

The emotional scene between father and son played by Thambi Ramaiah is easily the best bit in the film. Another portion where the gang interviews job-seekers to form their team for the big heist is a scream. The interview scene where a girl named Sasikala says that her ambition is to abolish corruption, it's laugh riot. Vignesh charms you with his subtle humor in writing and intelligent packaging.

Ramya Krishnan who appears to be having a blast sink her teeth into the part, once again revealing her gift for vastly improving a film by merely being in it. Rest of the supporting cast like Sathyan, Senthil, Shivasankar are all apt. Suresh Menon and Karthik in their respective roles impresses. The masterstroke of Vignesh to use Gautham Menon's unique voice for Suresh Menon works big time.

Like in all recent big star films, was there a need for a heroine and a love track here??? Keerthy Suresh looks pretty and is confident as Suriya's love interest, but it’s not a role that requires any heavy lifting. Meanwhile, a consistently reliable RJ Balaji suffers on account of an underwritten role.

Suriya commands your attention in every frame and you cannot take your eyes off him. Be it the emotional scene with his dad after an interview followed by the breakdown scene, when his friend commits suicide, he reveals the actor behind the star. After Vignesh and Suriya, Anirudh is another hero of TSK. His peppy songs and BGM is outstanding especially the Sodakku and Thaana song stays with you. Dinesh Krishnan's visuals, colour theme and angles brings and authentic 80's period in front of our eyes. Special mention to art director for the 'Nayagan' posters, Solidaire TV advertisements, and many such minute details.

On the downside, towards the climax the plot slips into repetition, predictability and a preachy tone. The Peela song act as speed-bump in the way of a smooth narrative. On the whole, Thaanaa Serndha Kootam is consistently engaging and delivers ample bang for your buck.
