100 Myths Explained That May Turn Your World Upside Down

If these 100 common misconceptions really are false, I have to ask the question, “What is life?”, because everything adults taught me as a kid was fabricated to keep me in check, apparently.

I “can” swim right after I eat, sugar “is not” responsible for hyperactivity, and it “does not” take seven years to digest gum.  Mind blowing myths are everywhere, creating misunderstandings about everything from diet to sex.

We don’t even have five senses. We have many, many more, something like 20!

What? How?

Consider that Vitamin C does not help to prevent colds, carrots do not improve your vision, and cracking your knuckles does not lead to future health risks like arthritis.

Furthermore, “Chinese” fortune cookies originated in “Japan”, and China’s Great Wall is not the only man-made object that can be seen from space because big city lights are the most prominent human invention that can be seen from our outer reaches.

Also, although Napoleon was 5’7″, the “Little Corporal” was taller than the average Frenchman during his reign. George Washington did not have wooden teeth; they were gold and ivory with a few horse and donkey choppers in there. That is quite a grill! And there is no evidence that Vikings had horned helmets, and cowboy hats were not a part of the Western American frontier.

Apologizes to those heavy-hearts who are stunned that our history classes and homes were full of fabrications, but you now have the truth that will hopefully set us and future generations free.

Your Brain On Beer vs Coffee

Let’s pretend that there aren’t enough half baked metaphors that describe the college experience and try to entertain this one: getting your degree is like walking a tight rope with a beer in one hand and coffee in the other. Even if you don’t drink and aren’t that keen on coffee. Well you really don’t even have to be a college student either. (Though you might want a fancy coffee holder) The point I’m trying to make here is that there is a delicate balance concerning when to relax and when to get down to business.

This raises some interesting questions though. With the knowledge that we have about like alcohol and caffeine, despite their drawbacks it seems that there is supposedly a way to responsibly maximize their benefits. If that’s true then it makes you wonder, are we missing our full potential by not taking the right boosters at the right time?

Well it would seem that way in theory, but there are plenty of people who are doing great things without the help. Then you have someone like Charles Bukowski. He was featured in an infographic last week about sleep habits and productivity. While being the latest to wake up every morning at noon (which even that seems a little early for him) he was also one of the more productive writers and a very committed alcoholic. There is a natural tension and release in life that can be intensified by stimulants or depressants, but whether or not this is conducive to a more fruitful lifestyle is a very difficult question.

The Fascinating Bitcoin Journey Through $10k

In 2017, Bitcoin found its way into world consciousness. Even those who did not care to know about the mysterious currency were forced to take notice as its value skyrocketed, and major news sources began heavily covering the history and outcomes of the mystical electronic coin.

A year ago bitcoin hit the $1,000 mark and continued to spike upward throughout the year before breaking the $10,000 mark on November 28, 2017.  It went on to flirt with $20,000 in December, before taking a breather.

Bitcoin is no longer just a whimsical form of currency used for corrupt means on the dark web (which is definitely a part of its current state and past history) or a way for F Society-type rebels to shun the dollar as well as the national economy. Its ascent has whipped up those with FOMO into a frenzy.

More businesses are starting to accept Bitcoin directly, and those who don’t may be falling behind. In fact, Overstock began accepting bitcoins in January 2014, allowing customers to buy everything from flat screens and laptops to bedding and rugs. They actually accepts other major cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum and Litecoin. Large brands like Expedia and Dish Network also led the way in 2014.

Bitcoin’s rise is nothing short of astounding (tulip mania anyone?)   In 2010, one bitcoin was worth 6 cents, but very few people thought anything of the digital currency.  On January 1, 2011, bitcoin’s value sat at 30 cents, so at the time, a $100 investment in it would have resulted in you having an electronic pocket full of 333.33 coins.

It has been a wild and random ride full of ups and downs, but if you had 333.33 bitcoins purchased in 2011, that you didn’t sell or lose through hackings, your $100 investment would now be worth nearly $3.8 million.

As a Business Insider headliner exclaimed, 10,000 bitcoins could buy two pizzas in 2010, but is now worth $100 million.

The World’s Deadliest Spiders

Arachnophobia, or the fear of spiders, is the second top phobia in the U.S.  In most cases, this fear is irrational, as most spiders are non-venomous and relatively harmless.  However, if you ever come across any of these spiders, it would be perfectly rational to be afraid because these are the spiders with the most dangerous bites.

On this list there are probably some familiar names, such as the tarantula and the black widow.  While both are infamous, both are far from the deadliest spiders in the world.  In fact, despite its large size and infamous reputation, the tarantula doesn’t even have a fatal bite for those who aren’t allergic.  For most, a tarantula bite doesn’t result in anything worse than an itchy rash.  The black widow on the other hand is much deadlier, as its bite produces a litany of undesirable symptoms such as fever or breathing problems, and an untreated bite may lead to death if not tended to within an hour.

While that seems like a dangerous bite, it’s certainly not the most dangerous.  The Brazilian Wandering Spider, native to northern South America, has a venomous bite that must be treated within thirty minutes.  A single bite can cause paralysis, chills, asphyxiation, and as if that wasn’t enough, it even causes painful erections!

Just like spiders, snakes are known for how venomous some of their species can be.  Brush up on identifying and treating dangerous snake bites while you’re on the topic.

The Introvert’s Guide To Job Interviews

If you’re the kind of person who feels comfortable in a room filled with people, making small talk with strangers and mingling around,
then this one is not for you. On the other hand, if you’d rather stay at home chilling with your cat and a great book, you’re probably an introvert!

Luckily, you’re not alone on the introvert boat. Research says that an approximate of 25 to 50 percent of the global population could be classified as introverts. This personality type gets energized from having “alone time”, or interacting with small groups, and often feels overwhelmed in new situations or very large groups of people. Introverts and extroverts have different brain wiring, and even career prospects can change depending on your personality.

As an introverted person, appearing friendly, meeting new people and being outgoing is often a challenge, so imagine my state of mind whenever I need to go to a job interview. To get rid of anxiety, I try to prepare interview question answers ahead of time.  I might even do a couple of test runs to the interview address to be *really* sure I have the time to get there.

These might seem like overkill or pure common sense, but you and I know there’s no such thing as too much preparation! To save you stress on your big day, here’s a quick guide to acing your interviews: from what to do beforehand, to the basics of showcasing your strengths (without bragging!) and how to follow up afterward. You’ll win your dream job in the blink of an eye!

Visualizing Big Data Using Big Macs

There is a massive amount of data out there. Surprisingly, it is theorized that 90% of all data in the world has been created in just the past few years.

If used correctly, big data can help almost any company, even the small ones (here are the tips for small businesses), to grow rapidly and generate huge revenue. There are also other benefits such as stemming the spread of diseases, combatting crime, and providing optimized entertainment. The potential of big data is endless.

But let’s put aside the complicated things for something a little more entertaining. Why not turn bytes into grams and calories? To help get a handle on the magnitude of big data, this infographic uses scales that we can understand. It equates data sizes to weights and then calories, so you can get a sense of how data has grown proportionally.

If 1 megabyte equals 1 gram, a floppy disk would have the same weight as 7 peas, while an 80-Minute CD-ROM Disc could weigh around 4-Wham O Ultimate Frisbees.

What about the modern ones? As the technology develops, a small device can have significant memory storage. For instance, an Apple iPad Air 2 would weigh the same as 11 peacocks, and an Xbox One would weigh as much as 5 Genuine Buddy 150 Scooters.

Now, let’s assume that 1 gigabyte equals 1 pound and by the time you finished reading that about one second had passed. One second might seems small to you, but one second of global Internet traffic is not. In fact, it would weigh the same as 12 adult male cows.

Now you know why they call it big data!

50 Annoying Phrases To Avoid At Work

When language fails us at work, we can always rely on common phrases to fill the silence. They are often a cacophony of metaphors strung together to confuse you into thinking work is being done.
Such as the following:

“Let’s get the ball rolling and do a deep dive; then we can start to get our ducks in a row. This could be a game changer and we need to hit the ground running.”

Sound familiar? Like something from the office that requires its own Rosetta Stone tape? That is exactly what’s wrong with overusing metaphors to replace real conversation.

They lack clarity and make it easy to say something whilst also saying nothing at all. Plus, if you’re on the receiving end and you don’t really get metaphors, you might find yourself trying to source some ducks and roll balls down a hallway.

In order to avoid the phrases in this infographic, you need to say exactly what you mean, which requires actual knowledge about your chosen topic or work task. If you don’t have this knowledge, perhaps it’s best to say very little and ask for help from someone who does know what they’re doing.

Ideally, do not pick the person who uses phrases like “drill down”, “no brainer” or “low hanging fruit”. It is unlikely that this person will be able to help you.

Eat With Caution: The World’s Most Dangerous Foods

Food is brings people joy. You can bond over food, socialize over food, and survive off of food. Well, not all of it. There are foods in the world that have major consequences to your body.

Today’s infographic is a list of the world’s most dangerous foods. These foods have caused organ failure, poisoning, and even death.

One of the most dangerous foods on this list comes from China, and is called the Blood Clam. Blood Clams are so dangerous that they cause viruses such as hepatitis A and dysentery. In 1988, 31 people died from eating these clams. 15% of people who consume blood clams gain some sort of infection.

Elderberries are a food that you must be extremely cautious with when preparing. You can eat these, but you must take a series of steps to eat them. You cannot eat these berries with the leaves, twigs, or seeds. These all contain cyanide which is an extremely dangerous chemical. People who have consumed elderberries have suffered from seizures which is never a good thing.

I highly recommend that if you ever come across these foods, avoid them at all costs. I don’t want anyone to get sick or injured if they consume these foods. Hopefully, if you see these foods anywhere, you will keep this infographic in mind. Eat well, eat smart, and eat healthy!

Should I Go To The Gym?

New year, new you, right? Yes, 2017 was a bit of a dumpster fire globally, politically, even socially some might say. But with a new year brings new opportunities, challenges and ways to grow.
And perhaps you woke up on January 1 feeling energised and ready to take on the world, one self-improvement task at a time, and you decided to begin with the gym. Physical exercise is key to having a healthier, happier life after all.

Plus, you know the gym, you understand the gym, there are no surprises at the gym; unless you go to a new one, obviously. But getting to the gym can be tricky, as this flow chart demonstrates. Sometimes our innermost desires are not completely matched up with our motivation to do the thing we need to do. Sometimes burning calories can be more of a chore than say, doing anything else. And sometimes procrastination just wins everything because it has had more practice.

Ultimately, it’s almost the end of January and your will to physically goto the gym is draining.  You might even have found gym rats at the gym a little irritating because they actually seem genuinely happy about going to the gym.  All you need is some excuses, so here they are.  Maybe you can figure out how to work out at work instead.

100 Myths Explained That May Turn Your World Upside Down[/7 Techniques To Remember Anythingu]

At first glance, memorization seems like a fundamental skill Google is doing away with.  Getting through life successfully is still difficult without memorization though.  You need to memorize information for major tests, school/business presentations, and enough knowledge to at least make you sound smart. The problem is, memorization is getting easier and easier to ignore.  To really stand out and remember details quickly, here are techniques to improve memory.

If you’re needing to memorize a speech, pretend you’re walking through your house. You know every room, every direction to turn to, and every detail in each room. Treat your speech like this walk through your house. It’s a technique called Loci. Divide the information of your speech like the rooms in your house. Keep retracing your steps to keep that information retained.

A technique that I’m going to try in the future is called the PQRST technique. This technique helps with memorization for an exam. The acronym PQRST stands for, “Preview, Question, Read, State, Test.” If you follow the steps used for this technique, you should be able to easily retain information and retrieve it with ease.

I hope you can use the techniques in this infographic to become a master of memorization. If you need more tips for exams, check out this ultimate cheat sheet for studying.

Your Life In Numbers: How Do You Use Your Time

Have you ever wondered how much time you spend sleeping in a lifetime?  How about how much time you spend in school? Seeing how you spend the time you are given is eye opening.  By far you will spend the most amount of time sleeping, as the average person will sleep around 33 years throughout their lives.  Given that the average life span is just under  80 years, you spend close to 40% of your life just sleeping!  With such a large chunk of life already taken up just by sleep, it’s important to make the rest of your years count.

With phones and computers everywhere, it seems impossible to get away from screens.  The average person spends about 11 years and 4 months looking at screens via TV, social media, or other activities.  Shockingly, this is only about two years shy of the total amount of time we spend at work: about 13 years and 2 months.  On the other hand, activities like romance, socializing, and exercising each only take up a little over one year of our lives.  Really makes you think about what you’re doing with your time doesn’t it?

Often times, we can become complacent with our lives, choosing safe or convenient activities like watching Netflix, or settling for a job you don’t like instead of more challenging but more rewarding activities like pursuing your dream or finding your soulmate.  However, as this infographic shows, our time on this earth is limited, and we must do our best to spend it to the best of our abilities.

Superlove: The Romantic Relationships of Marvel’s Finest

Superheroes are people too. Well, sort of. Yes, they have powers beyond all of our imaginations and they get to revel in the glory of adoring crowds when they save the human race or whatever, but they also have trash love lives.

Don’t believe it? Check out this infographic. It’s clear evidence that superhero love lives are as messy as ours, if not worse. And we don’t even have the competing priorities of love and the future of mankind to contend with.

Nevertheless, Wolverine, Iron Man and even She-Hulk seem to have had their pick of the bunch from the looks of it. No surprises about Wolverine; he’s all primitive and immortal, definitely one to swipe right on. Iron Man obviously has all the gadgets and money and is 95% human except for his heart, so he has that versatility going for him. And She-Hulk quite frankly is the very definition of a strong woman, and you’re fine as long as you’re not the one who makes her angry.

Honestly, this diagram is just a very clear indication of what happens when your social circle is too small; people date other people’s exes and there’s a good chance you’ll get hurt in the process (if not by someone with super strength, then simply via a broken heart). And beauty may only be skin deep.  Luckily for us mere mortals, we just have the small pool of millions and millions of average partners to choose from. Which is just super.

The Truth About Millennials And Financial Milestones

We lived the consequences of economic crisis, we’ve lived through tough times, we’ve seen households and coompanies fall and rise from the ashes… and apparently, we have learned nothing. According to recent research, millennials are mostly concerned about their financial future… and that’s about it. Anxiety about everything, without actually doing something to improve our peace of mind. That’s destructive behavior 101, at least according to my therapist.

So what exactly do millennials want to achieve? Apparently, it all comes down to “traditional” life goals such as getting married, having kids, building a successful career and buying a house. And for all of those dreams, we need money. A lot of money that as millennials we don’t have.

That big gap between wishing and actually achieving is, in fact, one of the reasons for our constant state of anxiety and stress. Between the lack of money and a lackluster financial education, it’s no wonder we feel very far from accomplishing those dreams.

The answer? Even when other things seem to go first, think about your financial future and have a plan. Stay on top of your bills and live by your budget (if you don’t have one, make one!). Basically, do everything you can to start adulting and being financially smart.
