Jai Bhim Review

Star Cast : Suriya, Rajisha Vijayan, Prakash Raj, Manikandan, and Lijo Mol Jose
Director : TJ Gnanavel

In Jai Bhim, director TJ Gnanavel has flawlessly adapted the real legal battle of the renowned advocate Chandru in the Madras HC after Rajakannu, a man from tribal community in Muthanai village near Kammapuram who was tortured by the local cops in a theft case.

Rajakannu (Manikandan) is a hard-working and honest man from the Irular community. When cops investigate a burglary case in a local politician's residence, they feel that Rajakannu, who had earlier visited the house to catch a deadly snake is the culprit.

They torture all the relatives of Rajakannu and ask his whereabouts. Finally, they also get Rajakannu and brutally torture him so that he would confess the crime. All of a sudden, they inform Rajakannu's wife Sengani (Lijo Mol Jose ) that her husband escaped from the prison. Later, Sengani with the help of local communist party leaders approaches the kind-hearted and knowledgable advocate Chandru(Suriya), who takes up the case without even charging a single rupee.

The rest of the film is all about how Chandru finds out the injustice that happened to Rajakannu and unmasks the crime of the local cops!

Director Gnanavel has authentically captured the lifestyle of the tribal people, their innocence, and honesty throughout the film. Though all the characters in the film are black and white, the film is not over the top as they have adapted a real incident. The police brutality in the film is not for the faint-hearted, especially those who cannot digest films like Visaaranai. The film also stands tall in properly registering the case proceedings in the High Court, probably the first in Tamil cinema?

Performance-wise, Manikandan and Lijo Mol Jose are exceptions as the tribal couple, they have given their heart and soul in the film, be it emotionally and physically demanding scenes. Kudos Suriya, who took a backseat and allows the director to give more importance to the core story and performed just as one of the characters in the film. But Suriya also comes throughout the film as the character is strongly written with some powerful scenes that also stay high on emotions.

For Suriya, Jai Bhim is a fantastic follow-up film after the highly successful Soorarai Pottru. It's good to see the actor has earned back his form with back-to-back quality films. Prakash Raj who plays the investigating officer has also done a neat job. Rajisha Vijayan, Ilavarasu, and other supporting actors are also adequate.

Technically, Jai Bhim's art department deserves applause for bringing back the 90s era. As pointed out earlier, the High Court proceedings are flawless and the set work is another important reason for the authentic portrayal. Sean Roldan's background score and soul-stirring songs have also elevated the emotional scenes in the film. SR Kathir's cinematography is another silent hero of the film, his work in the tiny police station and the vast High Court setup shows his versatility.

To conclude, Jai Bhim is a must-watch film to know the injustice that happened to a section of people and how as a society, we should spread love and not hatred to establish equality!
