New Windows 8 Logo Revealed by Microsoft

Today, Microsoft revealed that it was redesigning the logo for Windows 8 ahead of the much awaited Operating System. Meshing with the Metro design of Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8, the new logo is a slightly-angled blue block with a thin white cross in the middle, making it look like a window instead of the four-colour wavy flag in the past, reported Xinhua.

In a Blog post Sam Moreau, the Principal Director of User Experience for Windows states that,

” The Windows logo is a strong and widely recognised mark but when we stepped back and analysed it, we realised an evolution of our logo would better reflect our Metro style design principles and we also felt there was an opportunity to reconnect with some of the powerful characteristics of previous incarnations”

The 3rd party design company Pentagram helped Microsoft in the creation of the new Windows 8 logo. Among other things, Pentagram helped to create a new the logo for the Citybank.
Moreau writes that in a meeting to discuss the new logo, one of Pentagram’s designers, Paula Scher, asked the question, “Your name is Windows. Why are you a flag?”
Moreau writes:

“Windows” really is a beautiful metaphor for computing and with the new logo we wanted to celebrate the idea of a window, in perspective. Microsoft and Windows are all about putting technology in people’s hands to empower them to find their own perspectives. And that is what the new logo was meant to be. We did less of a re-design and more to return it to its original meaning and bringing Windows back to its roots – reimagining the Windows logo as just that – a window.

The first Windows logo was released in November 1985. Since then, the logo has gone through several redesigns, which were all based on the design of a four-color wavy flag. You can see the image belowe, it shows different redesigns of windows logos.
