Enai Nokki Paayum Thotta Review

Star Cast : Dhanush, Megha Akash, Senthil
Director : Gautham Vasudev Menon

First things first! Gautham Menon's long delayed Enai Noki Paayum Thotta is the weakest film from the director. The biggest drawback of the film is the director's obsession with voice-over style of narration. It was fine until Gautham used voice-over as a tool to narrate his stories but in Enai Nokki Paayum Thotta, each and every scene begins and ends with Dhanush's voice-over, which irritates us after a point. The film is packed with tired stereotypes, and is an unsatisfying watch at a running time of 157 minutes.

Just like any other Gautham Menon's film, here too hero Raghu (Dhanush) is an engineering student but this time his girlfriend is not a student but a film heroine Lekha (Mega Akash). They fall in love in a split second as she is shooting for her debut film in his college. She tells him that she's not interested to be in films and its director Kuberan (Senthil Veeraswamy) has forced her into the profession for money ( it seems the girl is an orphan and Kuberan sponsored her studies and is her guardian). Raghu takes her to his house in Pollachi and introduces Lekha to his parents who accept her. But soon Kuberan finds her whereabouts and threatens Raghu's parents, and she decides to go back with him to do more films! (First half reminds you so much of Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada (AYM)) .

Years pass by, Lekha has done five films now and out of the blue, she calls Raghu again to tell him that she found his long lost brother Thiru (Sasikumar) in Mumbai.  What happened to Lekha? What was Raghu's elder brother doing in Mumbai? Why are the cops and gangsters chasing him?

The film is not coherent right from the beginning, as we see a lot of continuity issues which we can be overlooked considering the delay but what happened to basic logic? There were loads of gunshots and killings yet Dhanush is roaming around casually in Mumbai! Yes, the romance looks aesthetic but where is the soul? The bond between the brothers is not convincing and where is the chemistry? The film doesn’t succeed in getting you to care for its characters or to sympathize with their situation because everything is conveyed via voiceover. We need scenes and strong dialogues Gautham! What happened to the exemplary writer in you?

While Dhanush has given his best, the story and presentation lets him down. He looks good in the college scenes and the action scenes, especially the one inside the lift is good. Megha Akash looks good and is a promising find. Villain Senthil Veeraswamy looks deadly and does his part well. The most anticipated songs of Darbuka Siva  is soothing but the visuals look very average. The scene where Sasikumar speaks English evokes unintentional laughter.

Overall, Enai Nokki Paayum Thotta is a mish-mash of Gautham's earlier films and is a slow and rickety ride that tires you out by the time it reaches its climax. If you do decide to watch it, go armed with patience. Lots of it.
