Kathanayagan Review

Movie Title : Kathanayagan
Director : Muruganandham
Star Cast : Vishnu Vishal, Catherine Tresa, Soori

Cut from the same cloth as his last hit Velainu Vandhutta Velaikkaran, Vishnu Vishal’s  Kathanayagan (he has produced the film) is the actor's big ticket to become a full fledged commercial action hero by using comedy and buffoonery in equal proportions.

The film is all about how coincidences and situations help a timid youngster (Vishnu Vishal) to overcome his fear and establish himself as a hero in front of his lady love's (Catherine Tresa) dad, who once made fun of him for being a faint-heart!!

The basic idea of Kathanayagan looks interesting on paper but as a film, it has its flaws. Especially, the first half is a total downer with unnecessary songs, a lifeless romance and very minimal gags. Things really gain momentum only after intermission when elements like Vijay Sethupathi's cameo as a doctor, the funny kidney transplant of Dubai Sheik Anandaraj and super singer Rajendran in the climax.

Alas, the key problem here is that none of it is particularly original or inventive. However, the comedy doesn't work much like Velainu Vandhutta Velaikkaran. It’s up to Vishnu Vishal to breathe life into this lazy film…which he does. The title Kathanayagan  suits him, who has shed all his inhibitions in the past and performed like a mass commercial hero. He scores in comedy, action and dance sequences. Catherine is there just for glamour and songs whereas Soori is in top form.

Lakshman's glossy cinematography in duets gives a breezy feel and Sean Roldan's chartbuster songs are pluses. Overall, Kathanayagan may satisfy audiences who doesn't bother to think hard.
