The Barista’s Guide to Latte Art

Nothing satisfies me more than a warm cup of coffee in the morning. What’s even nicer than a warm cup of coffee? A warm cup of coffee with a stunning image on top. Latte art has been a huge hit in coffee shops around the world, and this infographic tells you all about the process.

Latte art became popularized around 1996 by David Schomer. He is a Seattle-based barista who brought latte art to the masses in his book entitled, “Espresso Coffee.”

Of course, you are going to need coffee grounds and a coffee machine to make your own latte art, but you’ll need a few other tools. The pictures drawn on the latte are made of milk. In order to get this milk warmed up and whipped, you’ll need a steaming wand or frother to get that fluffy consistency. You’ll also need a small steaming pitcher to pour the milk onto the latte. Last but not least, you’ll need the classic bowl-shaped mug to bring your art to life.

Don’t be discouraged if you’re latte art doesn’t turn out how you want it. It will take a few attempts to get your ideal visual. Take it
from professional barista Ben Morrow, “Persistence, patience, and practice…”

I hope you can get inspired to make your own coffee creations. I know that I’ll be trying to make my own in the future. If you’re still needing a caffeine fix, check out the complete history of coffee.

The Science Behind Disconnecting From Work

It’s the weekend and that means no work, no stress, and some time to rejuvenate. Right? If you’ve ever felt guilty about watching Netflix instead of writing an email back to your boss, then this infographic is for you.

Thinking that you’ll be more productive by constantly working is false. According to the infographic, the result of working 60 hours a week for two months is the same as working 40 hours a week, measured in levels of productivity. The mind needs time to refresh in the same way that your body needs rest after a long day.

Since humans tend to deprive themselves of these mental breaks, work is the number one cause of sleep loss in adults. This stress also contributes to 382 billion dollars lost in American business each year, as well as problems with personal relationships off the clock. Other problems that could arise from overworking are glaucoma, caused by temporary eyestrain, depression and an increased risk of heart attacks in working men.

In contrast, disconnecting from work could mean an improvement in memory, problem solving and job performance ratings. Most fascinating of all is the fact that when workaholics take a break, they report higher job satisfaction and improved work/life balance.

If you would like to challenge yourself to take a break, you have options. Many of these options include separating your work and personal life, whether that be by having a separate work space in your home or a different phone for work versus your personal life. While at work, you can delegate tasks and create a to-do list, especially if overtime is likely. Finally, you can create peaceful outlets by meditating, finding a hobby, and/or going somewhere that makes you happy.

So, turn off your phone or mute your notifications, and spend some time with family and friends. It’s the weekend, which means it’s time to take some time to focus on L-I-V-I-N’.

The Netflix Shows You Won’t Mind Bingeing

It’s safe to say that Netflix had a successful 2017. People tuned in to watch new TV shows like American Vandal, Ozark, the Defenders, the Punisher, and so on. Additionally, we got long-awaited continuations for some of the best Netflix original series like Stranger Things, Black Mirror, Narcos. However, the biggest buzz came from the first Netflix original blockbuster movie called Bright. Sure, the critics didn’t embrace it as much as the audience did, but who cares. The movie did enough to get the green light for the sequel.

However, what interests me the most are those juicy facts about what were the most watched TV shows, which shows were binged the most.  Remember how Netflix can help relationships?  There’s nothing like an all consuming show to watch snuggled up to a significant other.

Did you know that one member watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl every single day in 2017? Or that a user on Antarctica binged through entire Shameless TV series in one sitting? Huge props to both of these users. The best part, these facts are not the only outrageous ones, as you will find out from this infographic.

7 Speaking Habits To Make You Sound Smarter

When you meet someone for the first time, they want to get a read on you. They look at the way you stand, what you’re wearing, and how you’re speaking to them. People put together clues about you just from a first impression.

The way you speak can determine how intelligent people think you are.   If you think you need to sound smarter when you speak, here are a few helpful tips.

Posture is very noticeable when speaking to others. If you’re slouched, you give off the impression that you are uncomfortable and unsure of yourself. Stand straight with a relaxed spine to stay comfortable and mentally relaxed when speaking to others.

Pay attention to the tone of your voice. If you sound monotone or give off vocal fry, you sound bored. You sound like you don’t care about the person you are talking to. Keep your vocal frequencies lively and fit them to the conversation you’re having.

You know the old saying, “If you don’t have something nice to say, then don’t saying anything at all.” In this case, don’t butt into conversations that you don’t have full knowledge of. This makes others think you are rude and a know-it-all. If you want to contribute to a similar conversation, try making common ground so you become more familiar with the topic at hand.

This infographic can help you gain confidence in your speech as well as comfortability. If you need some more speaking tips, here are ways to master the art of public speaking.

Breaking Up Is Hard To Do. Breaking A Lease Is Harder

Some people think that love is a trap, but it’s not true. A lease is. A lease is a legally binding trap; particularly when you share the lease with someone you have just broken up with.

If you live in a city or any heavily populated area, you’ll already know how hard it is to find a good place to rent, and looking with a second person is even harder. But people do it all the time. They meet someone, they fall in love, and then one person wakes up one day and says “Hey! Let’s live together, it’ll be great!” Both people, innocent in their dreamy love, have forgotten that looking for a place to live is stressful, and compromising is stressful, and moving house is one of the most stressful things we can do in life after death and divorce. Yet still, it happens, people sign a lease, and all seems well until it isn’t.

We all know good and well that you never really know someone until you live with them. And sometimes love just isn’t enough. So break-ups happen, but your lease does not care, and now you can’t afford to live alone.

So if you’re going through it, let this infographic prepare you for what’s to come, and for the sticky situation you will eventually, happily, get out of. Once all the papers are signed, obviously.

Then you can think about how to have an amazing looking home at a low cost.

10 Foods That Are Great For Building Muscle

I have to give a shout out to anyone who’s stuck to a diet through the holiday season. My daily food intake has been mostly eggnog and pumpkin pie, but I’m trying to do better in the new year.  Probably time to pick up foods that will turn my fat into muscle!

This infographic gives me a great place to start. If you’re looking for protein, the team at Strength Authority has the answer.  To really bulk up, increasing exercise and calories in addition to adding protein are equally important.

Unsurprisingly, beef, chicken and fish are all great sources of protein. Beef has a whopping 38 grams of protein per five-ounce serving, while chicken has 47 grams per serving.

If you’re a vegetarian, there are still options for you to gain some muscle. Brown rice, eggs, oats and sweet potatoes are all great sources of protein.  This might even help you solve that most commonly asked question, where do you get your protein?

For a nutrient-rich breakfast, try milk, cottage cheese, or greek yogurt. It isn’t always easy to trade unhealthy foods for healthier options, but there are benefits to a protein-filled diet. Protein can be a superfood for weight loss and help reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Even if you’re short on time, there are some ways to make your quick meals healthier, like adding protein powder.  Or check out some healthy hacks for takeout and microwaved meals.

These Social Media Trends Are On The Rise In 2018

There’s no doubt social media will remain center-stage in our lives this year, but what type of content will make you shine this coming year?Unsurprisingly, video will remain the preferred vehicle for information. By 2020, around 80 percent of global internet traffic will be attributed to video, so it’s smart to get in right away! Choosing video makes sense when we look at the stats: almost 95 percent of video messages are retained by viewers, compared to only 10 percent of text content. Who wouldn’t want a piece of that?

Another trend? Generation Z is filled with true digital natives, with more than 30 percent using YouTube, 25 percent using Instagram and 14 percent using Snapchat. This year also brings good news for every content maker out there: investment in influencers is on the rise across all platforms and has even trumped classic email marketing campaigns. The increase in investment has its reasons: influencers can increase your conversion rates tenfold. Not bad in our book!

Another trend that won’t comes as a surprise? Smartphones gain more popularity every day, and by the end of the year, the world will see nearly 2.5 billion of them in use. That’s why social media platforms are developing better functioning mobile versions: more than 50 percent of screen time in the U.S. is on the phone, so it’s only logical mobile versions need to be up to the task. We wish you luck creating winning content this year!

Super Bowl LII: History In The Making

Here we are, at Super Bowl Sunday. Breakout the pizza and beers, hang out with friends, and watch the biggest football game of the year. This year, the New England Patriots will be taking on the Philadelphia Eagles to see who will reign supreme.

The Super Bowl first occurred in the year 1967. Since then, there have 19 teams who have gone on to win the title, some more than once. My favorite team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, reign supreme with 6 Super Bowl titles under their belt. Who knows, maybe New England will tie up with them after today!

One of the reasons some viewers like to watch the Super Bowl is their ridiculous commercials. The Super Bowl is advertiser’s golden opportunity to sell a product. Last year alone, TV advertisers gained 5.05 million dollars from their commercials. Franchises kill the advertising game this time of year.

Speaking of spending, the Super Bowl is considered to be one of the largest consumer spending days of the year. The U.S. spent 14.1 billion dollars on the Super Bowl in 2017. This accounts for food, drinks, decorations, and more.

This is going to be an intense game, and I personally can’t pick a winner. Not familiar with American football? The history of the Super Bowl is a long and storied one, not without controversy surrounding the game itself and potential injuries.  For most of America though, and perhaps some of the rest of the world, it is a prime time sports event of the year.

Have a great time at your Super Bowl watch party!

How To Improve Your Emotional Intelligence And Communicate Well

When I was in school, there were two types of people: those with street smarts and those with book smarts. Emotional intelligence wasn’t included in either category or even discussed at all. Yet it can be a strong predictor of happiness.

What is emotional intelligence, commonly known as EI?  It doesn’t have much to do with manners — instead, it’s the ability to effectively use, understand, and manage your emotions.

Today’s graphic introduces a flow chart that can help you map out how emotionally intelligent you may be based on a few scenarios. It offers eight possible ratings of your strengths and weaknesses. The graphic told me that I manage my feelings well, but could work on perceiving emotions and using them effectively. Something interesting to consider: I may answer the questions differently depending on my mood.

This infographic offers many ways to improve your emotional weaknesses, so take advantage of the suggestions. If you need to improve your EI, the graphic suggests asking yourself probing questions and taking a step back. If you need to work on understanding and perceiving emotions, the graphic suggests giving yourself time to reflect and to observe strangers and create narratives based on what they might be thinking. Finally, the graphic says that if you need work on managing emotions, you should douse your face in cold water because it can reduce anxiety levels

Learn More About Online Dating Trends and Insights

We’re living in a digital world. Thanks to smartphones, everything constantly at our fingertips. We no longer have to go to stores to shop, sit in restaurants to order food, or even go places to meet people. There’s an app for that.

As of 2016, 15 percent of American adults claimed that they’ve used online dating sites and mobile dating apps, and the number is growing. Europe has the highest user acquisition cost, meaning app creators spend the most amount of money when trying to acquire dating app customers. North America had both the lowest user acquisition cost and the highest subscription rate. Asia ranked somewhere in between the continents for both categories.

Just as North America, Asia, and Europe have differing trends, men and women respond differently to dating apps. While it costs more for companies to market their dating apps to women and to convince them to install said apps, women are much more likely to register and subscribe to these apps than men. The usage of android devices and apple devices has an impact, too. Women registered for dating apps nearly twice as frequently as men on both Android and Apple devices.

When it gets warm outside, dating apps get more active. The months June through September each see more activity in comparison to the rest of the year, although January is an outlier. Perhaps this is connected with some New Year’s resolutions?

Another observation is that user engagement drops significantly once it comes to dating app subscriptions. It typically takes an entire week for users to install, register and subscribe to dating apps. How do you see these trends changing in the future?

How Competitive Parents Affect A Child’s Sportsmanship

Extracurricular activities like school clubs and athletic teams are seen as an integral part of growing up in American society. Sometimes, though, it’s the parents of young athletes that need the most coaching.
According to a survey conducted by CoachUp, 75 percent of coaches claim that most parents put too much emphasis on their child winning the game rather than loving the game. The enjoyment that a child gets from a sport should not be dependent on winning or losing.

Additionally, 95 percent of coaches say that they’ve witnessed a parent yelling at a referee during their child’s game. This can be both embarrassing to your child and harmful to their team’s spirit. In contrast, 80 percent of coaches say that it’s best for a parent to offer encouragement from the sidelines. If you want your child to show respect and good sportsmanship, you must embody these same traits on the sidelines. After all, these qualities could be the difference between a successful or an unsuccessful person later on in life.

Finally, always take the time to parent rather than to coach your child. Three in four coaches agree that when parents coach a child’s team, it can place a strain on the parent-child relationship. So pop a squat on the bleachers and cheer on little Johnny from afar. Get some ice cream after the game and remember to encourage your child, win or lose.

How To Extend The Lifespan Of Your Digital Content

Having a digital presence as a business owner has never been more important.  If you don’t have a website or social media following, it’s nearly impossible for potential customers to find you. If your business doesn’t have an online presence, it’s hard to know where to begin. With all of the social media networks out there, it’s difficult to know which ones are most valuable. Once you have social media accounts, how do you compete with the continuous streams of content on the web? Information gets lost in the blink of an eye.

In the sea of posts, tweets, and videos of all kinds, posting on social media can feel like shouting into the void. Stand out from the crowd by being smart about what you post, how you post it, and which social networks you use. According to this infographic, strategies are platform specific, so don’t fall for a one-size-fits-all kind of plan.

Your goal is to make a lasting impression on potential clients, employers and followers, which means you’ll need your content to stick with your audience. Take a look at these tips on how to lengthen the lifespan of your content and set sail for success.

This Is What Happens When You Fall In Love

Feeling anxious? Experiencing a loss of appetite? Struggling to get a good night’s sleep? I hate to break it to you, but you might just be in love.

If there isn’t a special someone in your life, you might want to seek medical attention for all those symptoms, but if there is, then you’ve got little to fear — except for lovesickness and possible heartbreak.

Love is not simply the butterflies in your stomach or the songs that remind you of your crush. It also brings hormonal changes that can cause problems, distractions, and mood changes. Serotonin and dopamine are involved during the first stages, which is really your body’s way of letting you know that you’re about to take a big trip down lover’s lane.

Although science is involved, you do have some control over the situation. Apparently, proximity, eye contact and being in danger with someone can all increase your feelings of attraction and eventually love toward someone. If you don’t want to fall in love, prioritize personal space, stare at the floor when having a conversation and never walk along a shaky bridge with someone attractive. Problem solved.

An Easy Guide To On-Screen Character Archetypes

Do you ever watch a film and think, “I could have done better! There’s two hours of my life I’ll never get back!” That’s easily remedied — just become a screenwriter.

You might have to go back to school and learn about film from the experts, but what’s two or three years of education compared to watching another bad film?

But first things first: You need to know how to write the best characters. You might be harboring fantasies of basing your villain someone you dislike, but they need to fit the bill. Do you want an Every Person character, one who fades into the background but has a cynicism that could become concerning? Or maybe a classic Ruler, someone completely obsessed with control who eventually wants to form their own dictatorship?

This infographic is exactly what you need to exact revenge on all those who have wronged you by writing them into your very first screenplay and casting them as a villain or a doomed protagonist. And of course, you can base the hero on yourself. It’s your film, after all. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, this infographic will help you master character archetypes.
