Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu 2 Review

Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu (2009) was a cute little gem which made everyone sit up and notice Vishnu Vishal the new hero and director Suseenthiran. Now, debutant director Selva Sekaran and Vikranth who has been waiting for a big break have come together for the second part, which is not a continuation from the first part but the team has tried to retain the core flavor.
Saravanan( Vikranth) runs a musical store in the late '80s, his dad Saamy (Pasupathi) is a former Kabbadi player but gave up his passion for the better future of his son. While Saravanan often yells at Saamy for spending hard earned money on Kabbadi tournaments, he decides bring back his dad's lost glory after his mom narrates the story on why they left their hometown. Knowing the reason behind his dad's blind love for Kabbadi and the embarrassment he faced in his hometown, Saravanan decides to join the local Kabbadi team. There is also a forced romantic angle in the film which sticks out like a sore thumb.
Pasupathi once again proves his caliber and steals the show with his riveting performance. Though Vikranth shows some improvement, he has a long way to go to carry a film on his shoulder. Kishore is good while the rest of the actors are just okay. Arthana Binu looks cute but her character lets her down.
The main problem with Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu 2 is that the filmmaking looks old and is not in sync with the current trend. Even the first part of the film was set in '80s but the execution wasn't melodramatic and cliched like the sequel. As the screenplay revolves around the tried and tested formula, it's quite easy for the audiences to guess the next scene.
Overall, Venilla Kabadi Kuzhu 2 is a big disappointment and lacks the spark required for a sports drama.
