Merku Thodarchi Malai Review

Star Cast : Sathyaraj, Varalakshmi, Kishore, Vivek, Jayakumar, Yogi Babu
Director : Sarjun

In the end credits of the film, Echarikkai director Sarjun mentions that his inspiration is from films like the British thriller ‘The Disappearance of Alice Creed’, ‘La Orca’ and his guru Mani Ratnam’s 'Kadal’.  It is indeed an interesting thriller which is good on paper but Sarjun's direction and screenplay is too juvenile and amateurish especially in the second half.  Unnecessary songs, back stories and a couple of scenes involving Yogi Babu stick out like a sore thumb.

Echarikkai starts with a backstory of  David(Kishore) a 14 year old young man who kills his sister's husband in font of his 5-year old nephew Thomas’(Vivek Rajgopal) after he comes to know that the latter murdered his sister. David asks Thomas to go to prison but he betrays his uncle who gets life imprisonment. Years later , Now Thomas is a petty criminal and and David  who is back from jail sketch a plan to earn more money. Together, they decide to kidnap Swetha(Varalakshmi), daughter of wealthy builder Perumal (Jayakumar) and demands ransom.

Perumal seeks the help of retired cop Natraj (Sathyaraj) who can’t come out of his house as he needs to take care of his daughter Pia who has a rare medical condition and requires constant care. How Natraj cracks the case in his house forms the crux of the story, the climax is filled with a serious moral message that money is nothing but a piece of paper.

Generally, filmmakers don’t elaborate the backstory of antagonists but Sarjun takes time to spend the conflict exists in the relationship of David and Thomas which is quite good. But the problem here is the unwanted long flashback scenes for Varalakshmi and Sathyaraj. While the kidnap episode and David-Thomas’ relationship are inspired, what really worked in favor of the film is the Sathyaraj’s portions.

Sathyaraj is in top form as the intelligent investigative cop and how he finds both David and Thomas despite not stepping out of his home is interesting. The climax is actually poignant on paper but Sarjun shouldn’t have saved it until the climax. Imagine how Sathyaraj’s character would have been if he comes to know that only huge money would save his daughter's life and Kishore’s good deed for his nephew could’ve been revealed much earlier.

The film’s weakest link is Varalakshmi, as her character is badly written and presented We don't feel for her character who is always iritatingly chirpy, her love with Vivek is so plastic and why does she have so much make-up and lipstick even when she is held captive???

Performance wise, both Sathyaraj and Kishore stand out, thanks to their experience. The newcomer Vivek is also impressive in scenes with Kishore but Yogi Babu’s presence looks forced in a crime thriller genre.

Overall, Echarikkai is a decent crime thriller for Sathyaraj’s investigative portions, Kishore’s performance, and the engaging climax stretch.
