K-13  Review

Star Cast : Arulnithi,Shraddha Srinath,Yogi Babu
Director : Barath Neelakantan

Debutant director Bharath Neelakandan's K13 is a smartly written slow burn mystery thriller.

The film starts from the go and to be honest, it struggles to grab our attention, especially the initial thirty minutes featuring Arulnithi and Shraddha in the pub.

The dialogues ae quite ordinary and we cannot invest much in the proceedings.. Just like any other slow burn thriller, here too we have to wait for at least 30 minutes to the know the mystery behind the two lead characters. However, post intermission things speeden up and from that point, there is looking back.

Mathiyalagan (Arulnithi) is a struggling assistant director whose first film gets dropped and he is trying his best to make it big in the industry. He meets another depressed novel writer Malar (Shraddha Srinath) in a pub. They discuss their lives over a drink. Malar takes Mathiyalagan to her apartment but in the morning, the latter was tied to a chair and the former mysteriously found dead. Cops enter into the crime scene and they find that the CCTV cameras were broken.

But they are unable to find the key to Malar's flat. In the mean time, Mathiyalagan tries to escape from the crime scene and also finds out why his life turned upside down in one night....

As said earlier, Bharath tries to confuse the audiences with a non-linear screenplay and also with initial set of scenes. He also unveils the most important twist only in the climax so those who love twists and turns will definitely love his work. All they have to do is to invest sometime. The climax is sure to be a huge surprise for the audiences, but there are many logical loopholes that may leave you confused.

Arulnithi Tamialarasu has once again delivered a subtle performance. Though he is not convincing as the drunkard youngster, slowly we get attracted to his character and start feeling for him. Shraddha Srinath is also quite adequate as the depressed writer.

Technically, cinematographer Aravind Singh must be appreciated for handling a film which mostly happens inside one room. The runtime is just 103 minutes so the film is quite crisp. Sam CS' spine chilling background score is another biggest advantage for the film.

Overall, K13 is another quality film from Arulnithi who has an eye for good scripts.
