Star Cast : Karthi, Narain, Ramana, Arjun Dass, Dheena
Director : Lokesh Kanagaraj

Lokesh Kanagaraj seems to be Tamil cinema's new thriller master, as he loves to make films with multiple characters. His debut film Maanagaram was a hyperlink thriller with several characters interconnected with each other. In Kaithi too we have a long list of actors but each of them has a purpose to be in the film.
The film opens with an upright cop Bejoy (Narain) and his team, as they confiscate almost 90 kg of cocaine, kept in a secret cell under the Commissioner’s office. Adaikalam, the head of the drug mafia is under arrest but his brother Anbu (Arjun Dass) and immediate subordinates are in search of the cocaine and their leader.

The gangsters smartly add drugs to the alcohol bottles at a police officer's house party and almost all the senior officers in the city are sedated and unconscious. Anbu wants to take control of the Commissioner's office where Adaikalam and the Cocaine are kept in a secret vault.

Now, the Commissioner's office is practically empty with a newly transferred constable (George Mariyam) and a group of college students who were arrested for drunken driving. Meanwhile, Bejoy who was under medication did not touch alcohol at the party and he has to save the lives of his superior officers and also reach the Commissioner's office.

Bejoy seeks the help of Dilli (Karthi) a prisoner who is just released on parole to meet his daughter, whom he has never seen. Dilli agrees to drive the lorry carrying all the superior officers, Bejoy and the young lorry owner (Dheena) to the hospital.

Though Dilli is handcuffed, he becomes the saviour as he has three mission - to save the life of the police officers, to meet his daughter and also help the innocent people who are trapped inside the Commissioner's office. How Dilli does this impossible mission, forms the rest of this engaging thriller.

There is no needless romantic track, mass glorification scenes or unwanted commercial elements here. Hats off to director Lokesh Kanagaraj, Karthi and producers Dream Warrior Pictures for making this gutsy action thriller which will touch you emotionally too.

As usual, Karthi shines with his innocent image and inimitable dialogue delivery, his hard work is quite evident in the action scenes and emotional scenes. Narain is impressive as Bejoy. But it is George as the meek constable, Arjun Dass as the antagonist and Dheena who are outstanding.

Cinematographer Sathyan Sooryan has captured the action scenes during night, dust and rough terrain aesthetically. Music composer Sam CS's background score is another silent hero of the film. Anbariv's skillfully choreographed stunts are commendable.

Technically Kaithi is brilliant, especially the pre-climax with the humongous weapon is a surprise and treat to watch. The stunt portions are shot in long, wide takes, and edited in a way that allows you to enjoy and appreciate the sheer hard work and risk that’s gone into the making. On the downside, the energy takes a beating post-interval as the film needs trimming of at least 10 minutes.

On the whole. Kaithi is a solid action thriller and it will be a feast for action lovers. The film also has a lovely underlying father-daughter sentiment which works well in the climax! We are going with 3.5 out of five for Kaithi. Prepare to be thrilled. And just remember, it is one of Karthi's best.
