Mehandi Circus Review

Star Cast : Madhampatty Rangaraj, Shweta Tripathi
Director : Saravana Rajendran

Debutant director Saravana Rajendran’s Mehandi Circus is a tribute to Ilaiyaraaja’s everlasting music and is a love story that is poignant and powerful. It will make you laugh and cry.

The plot is nothing new as we have read and seen such love stories over the years in novels and films. But is it the packaging, milieu, presentation, fresh cast, soul-stirring songs of Sean Roldan, poignant writing by Raju Murugan and Saravana Rajendran and breezy visuals by cinematographer Selvakumar that makes Mehandi Circus a feel-good entertainer.

The director also added a pinch of harsh reality to the celebrated love stories and the climax is also quite refreshing unlike the epic romantic tales, which often send us home with sad faces.

Jeeva(Madhampatty Rangaraj) runs an audio cassette shop named ‘Raja Geetham’ in a village near Kodaikanal (the film is set in the early ‘90s). As the name suggests, the shop basically helps the local youngsters to convey their love through Ilaiyaraaja’s music and it works for them big time. While Jeeva helps everyone’s love life in his neighborhood, he falls in love with Mehandi (Shweta Tripathi) who is a part of a circus company who reaches the village.

Jeeva’s dad Raajangham (Marimuthu) does not like his son being in love with a girl from a lower cast and Mehandi's dad is also against the love . But with the help of the local priest Amaladass (Vela Ramamoorthy) and close friend (RJ Vigneshkanth) the lovers elope only to be caught by Raajangham and his men! So will the lovers unite?

Though Madhampatty Rangaraj as Jeeva suits the role, he has to improve a lot to be natural in front of the camera. Having said that, kudos to the young man to carry the role of an youngster in 90's and a man in late 40s gracefully. Known for her impeccable performance in Masaan, Shweta Tripathi shines as the innocent circus girl and brings out the helpless nature of her character. For a change, the new-age villain Vela Ramamoorthy gets a positive role and it’s refreshing to see him in a character who cracks jokes and passes life-lessons over a glass of wine.

RJ Vigneshkanth finally evokes some good laughter, as he plays Jeeva’s close friend and his comedy one-liners on AR Rahman’s music is one of the major highlights of the film. Anchur Vikash who plays the star performer at the circus is a perfect choice and he contributes to the twists and turns in the latter half of the film.

As said earlier, besides the performances from the lead pair, the film also benefits from the captivating music of Sean Roldan and exquisite visuals. Ilaiyaraaja’s old songs and Sean Roldan’s music add more novelty to the film.

On the whole, Mehandi Circus is an immensely likeable film that should appeal to all ages, mainly its target audience- the youth. This feel-good entertainer will satisfy you!
