Mei  Review

Star Cast : Nicky Sundaram, Aishwarya Rajesh, Kishore
Director : SA Bhaskaran

Films like E, Yennai Arindhaal and Kaaki Sattai  had exposed medical crimes, in which the poor and gullible were exploited and murdered for organs. SA Bhaskaran’s Mei has a similar plot and targets on a crime, based on a real incident which happened in Tamil Nadu. With enough cinematic touches, the director has delivered an engaging investigative thriller. Thanks to the strong supporting cast like Charlie, Kishore, and Aishwarya Rajesh, the film is watchable.

Mei begins with a missing case and the girl’s father(Charlie) lodges a complaint. As the investigating officer(Ajay Ghosh) is not able to bring the culprits out, an upright cop Muthu (Kishore) takes charge. The people behind the crime are powerful and will go to any extent to save their face. Meanwhile, Abhinav (Nicky Sundaram), a US return also gets linked to this medical mafia. The rest of the film is all about how Muthu solves the missing case with the help of Abhinav and a medical rep (Aishwarya Rajesh) with whom he is in love.

Director SA Bhaskaran and writer Sentha Murugesan have done their research work, especially in the scenes revealing the horrific crimes that exist in the medical field and the writing especially the twist involving Muthu is noteworthy. The biggest advantage of Mei is its strong supporting cast. All of them have contributed in taking the story forward along with a slick run time of less than 2 hours. Special mention to Charlie and Kishore whereas Aishwarya Rajesh doesn’t have much to do. The end twist and suspense is also neatly done!

The film’s protagonist Nicky is just okay, and he should improve on his body language and acting chops. But the good thing is that he has made his debut in a content-driven film and not a brainless entertainer. Technically, the film is passable for the budget while the dialogues by Sentha Muruguesan and his core story stand out. Overall,  ‘Mei’ is a watchable thriller for the research work done by the young team, the strong supporting cast and the crisp run time (110 minutes).
