Nerkonda Paarvai Review

Star Cast : Ajith, Shraddha Srinath, Abirami, Andrea, Adhik, Arjun, Ashwin

Nerkonda Paarvai is an efficiently adapted, brilliantly performed and neatly presented courtroom drama. The changes brought in by director H Vinoth and Ajith works big time for the film.

Meera Krishnan, Famitha Banu and Andrea (Shraddha Srinath, Abirami and Andrea Triang) are three independent working women staying together in an apartment in Chennai. Trouble arises when they go to a party with three rich young men Adhik, Vishwa and Venky (Arjun Chidambaram, Adhik and Ashwin Rao). We don't exactly know what happened in the resort. The girls say that the boys tried to misbehave so Meera had no other option but to hit Adhik and escape out of the place. But the trouble continues as the wounded boys are desperate to teach a fitting lesson to the girls. Out of the blue, an upright lawyer Bharath Subramaniam (Ajith) comes to the rescue of the girls...

So if you have already seen the original version (Pink), Nerkonda Paarvai wouldn't be a big surprise. But the film still works because of Thala Ajith and the hard hitting dialogues of Vinoth in the second half. Ajith literally owns the film with his baritone voice and majestic screen presence. The bipolar condition is a brilliant tweak brought in by director for the mass angle. The pre-interval action episode will also work well among the masses. However, the romantic portion featuring Vidya Balan looks cliched and forced.

Nerkonda Paarvai is Thala Ajith's show all the way. Shraddha, Abirami and Andrea have done an extremely good job. Vinoth has worked the courtroom scenes brilliantly and are more powerful than the original. Lines on virginity and sexual preferences are considered to be taboo here in Tamil cinema but Vinoth has boldly talked about such topics. On the downside, the film is lengthy.

Technically, Yuvan Shankar Raja's background score uplifts the mood of the film and Nirav Shah's cinematography is just functional.Overall, Nerkonda Paarvai is a much needed film in Tamil cinema. When a mass hero like Ajith strongly says that 'No means No', it's quite powerful and gives us a hope that the change is inevitable.
