Oththa Seruppu Size 7 Review

Star Cast : Radhakrishnan Parthiban
Director : Radhakrishnan Parthiban

The biggest success of Oththa Seruppu Size 7 written, produced and directed by Parthiban is the way he has narrated a mainstream crime thriller with just one character in the film. Had he opted for the tried and tested route, the film wouldn’t have given us so much high but thanks to his guts to go solo from the word go, we are bowled over by his ability to hold the screen for 105 minutes!

Maasilamani(Parthiban) is a suspect in a murder case and cops take him in custody for investigation. Initially, Maasilamani’s statements confuse and irritate the cops. Later, they bring in a psychologist to whom Maasi narrates his past and why he commited the murder. The rest of the film is all about whether cops put him behind the bars or he comes out using his intelligence.

Though you keep hearing a lot of voices of various characters, you don’t see them. Parthiepan owns the entire film with his wide set of expressions, commentaries on social and economic flaws in the system. The way he expresses his love towards his wife and ailing son is one of the endearing moments in the film.

The biggest highlight of Oththa Seruppu Size 7 is the dialogues which keeps us smile, think, and get sorryed into the world of Maasilamani, especially in the second half. Parthiban has woven the script with crimes that happened in real life and intelligently placed an end twist which provides a satisfying closure.

However, he has invested too much time in the first half to project him as a mentally disturbed that we only get to know more about him after the arrival of the psychologist! Audiences will definitely enjoy Oththa Seruppu Size 7 provided they have the patience to wait until the intermission.

Undeniably, the film is a one-man show—the writer and actor Parthiban take the film to a new level. Sound designer Resul Pookutty and cinematographer Ramji are the other two silent heroes in the film. It’s a challenge for any cinematographer to showcase a 105 minutes film with one character and a tiny interrogation room but Ramji has pulled it off with elan.

Resul’s sound design helps us to forget the fact that Parthiban is the only actor present in the film. Sathya has also done a commendable job in the background score department.

Overall, Oththa Seruppu Size 7 is a laudable experimental attempt. Go for it if you are looking for something new and you will surely love the experience.
