Kaappaan Review

Star Cast : Mohanlal, Suriya, Arya, Sayyeshaa, Boman Irani
Director : KV Anand

Suriya's, KV Anand directed Kaappaan feels dated and devoid of any original insight.

Action films usually have no room for much dialogues and emotions but Kaappaan has too many agendas attached to a single film. With a plot that’s entirely predictable and seldom compelling, even the twists give us a sense of deja vu. The presentation too slips into repetition and predictability, and characters like the Prime Minister and corrupt politicians come off as caricatures.

The film begins with Kathir (Suriya) planting explosives on a moving goods train and cut to the flashback, we see him as an organic farmer ( a mandatory intro song here) who secretly plots another bomb blast. Later, it is revealed that he is a secret agent who does ethical dirty jobs to clean the mess for Indian Government. The current Prime Minister Chandrakanth Varma (Mohanlal) applauds Kathir and appoints him as his personal bodyguard (a Special Protection Group officer).

Slowly, Kathir and the Prime Minister develop a close rapport. There is a constant threat to Varma's life and during interval block he is assassinated in a Kashmir bomb blast. Kathir is blamed for security lapse and the rest of the film is whether our smart hero finds the criminal master mind behind the assassination.

Anand has brought in subplots including a greedy business tycoon ( Boman Irani) and his bio war on the local farmers but it makes the film clumsy. Its surprising to see every director and hero in Tamil cinema exploiting the plight of the farmers??? There is no humour and why was all the double -meaning dialogues included?

As usual, Suriya looks good and sincere, gives his best but is that enough? He needs a good script and character that his fans will love. Being a mainstream action hero, we expect Suriya's role to be powerful but it lacks the punch and there is nothing much for him to do in the film other than talking a  lot of preachy dialogues and easily bashing up bad guys at regular interval!

Mohanlal (is a miscast) does a neat job but his patriotic lines hardly create any impact. Sayyeshaa looks cute and gorgeous. Boman Irani plays a caricature villain role whereas the secondary villain Chirag Jani's role is actually better. Arya looks mature to play the playful 25-year-old son of the Prime Minister while Samuthirakani is wasted in a badly written role.

Usually Anand's films stand out in the technical department but here everything is strictly average including music, cinematography, writing and editing. We also get a vibe of watching an old Vijayakanth film with an extra dose of organic farming and bio war angle thrown in. On the whole, it is easily the weakest film of KV Anand.

It’s a disappointment, no question about it from a team capable of so much more. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
