What is 4K UHD

• 4K is the new big thing in display technology.
• 1920 x 1080 resolution - full HD TVs: Image of around 2 megapixels
• UHDTV - 8 megapixel image from hi-resolution cameras.
• 4K denotes a very specific display resolution of 4096 x 2160.
• Proposed by NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories and defined and approved by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
• It will soon become a format for both broadcast TV and Blu-ray.

Difference between 4K and ULTRAHD

• Technically, "Ultra High Definition" is actually a derivation of the 4K digital cinema standard.
However while your local multiplex shows images in native 4096 x 2160 4K resolution, the new Ultra HD consumer format has a slightly lower resolution of 3840 x 2160.
• This is one reason why some brands prefer not to use the 4K label at all, sticking with Ultra HD or UHD instead.
However, the numerical shorthand looks likely to stick.
• The term “4K” originally derives from the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI), a consortium of motion picture studios that standardized a spec for the production and digital projection of 4K content.
• In this case, 4K is 4,096 by 2,160, and is exactly four times the previous standard for digital editing and projection (2K, or 2,048 by 1,080).
• 4K refers to the fact that the horizontal pixel count (4,096) is roughly four thousand.
• The 4K standard is not just a resolution, either: It also defines how 4K content is encoded. A DCI 4K stream is compressed using JPEG2000, can have a bitrate of up to 250Mbps, and employs 12-bit 4:4:4 color depth

WHERE TO USE 4K UHD

For the gaming crowd, there are now two 4K- and HDR-compatible consoles on the market:
• The PlayStation 4 Pro and
• The Xbox One X.

• Both consoles have their own lists of 4K and HDR titles (PS4, Xbox), as well as their own premium online services with perks like online play and complimentary games every month.

• Streaming services such as Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Rakuten and YouTube now offer plenty of 4K films and TV shows.
Apple and Google have 4K downloads at fairly affordable prices, and have their own 4K streamers – Apple TV 4K and Chromecast Ultra – to play the content.
with the highlights including Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies, and Netflix.
