Lockup Review

Star Cast : Vaibhav, Venkat Prabhu, Poorna, Vani Bhojan
Director : Charles

Debutant director SG Charles has delivered a decent whodunit thriller with Lockup. The film basically deals with the murder of an Inspector Sampath (Mime Gopi). The case immediately goes to the inspector of the police, Ilavarasi (Easwari Rao). When Ilavarasi starts investigating the murder, it's not an open and shut case as suggested by the department.

Ilavarasi is not convinced with Moorthy (Venkat Prabhu), the Sub Inspector of Police who arrested a local criminal for murdering Sampath. The knife which was used for the murder is different from the knife which was spotted at the scene. Then there is a constable Vasanth (Vaibhav) who used to work closely with Moorthy distanced himself now. On the same day of Sampath's murder, a small boy comes to the police station saying that his mom (Poorna) was missing. Later, cops find out that the boy's mom died by falling down from a flyover.

The rest of the film is all about who killed Sampath and whether both Moorthy and Vasanth are involved in the murder or not?

The film's biggest plus point is the non-linear screenplay. Director Charles has narrated the script on the need to know basis, he hasn't fully revealed the characterization and the twists in the beginning and provides twists and turns throughout the film. The runtime is just 1hr and 46 minutes so it's an additional advantage for Lockup.

After Kaala, Easwari Rao has a solid role and she has performed her part flawlessly. Both Venkat Prabhu and Vaibhav are cunning in their own ways despite being in the police force. The grey shaded characters of these two actors help us to invest more in the film.

Lockup has its own share of flaws, the film has continuity issues and many scenes are spoiled by the poor lip-sync. The female lead (Vani Bhojan) is there for the sake of it and we could guess that the editor has chopped off many unwanted scenes to make the film racier.

Arrol Corelli's background score is a big plus for the film and the cinematography is also quite impressive. Overall, Lockup is a decent whodunit thriller that keeps us engaged in the crisp 106 minutes runtime.
