WHAT IS SEX?
The Hollywood and Bollywood movies, which is a reflection of our culture at large, have been teaching us that sex is about either enjoying the physical bodies of one another or finding personal gratification by looking at the naked bodies. This sort of understanding justifies pornography, pre-marital sex, extra-marital affair, and lesbian or gay relationship.
Contrarily, the Holy Bible reveals sex as not a merely physical enjoyment; it is about intimacy, i.e. involving our physical emotions, intimate knowledge about each other, and willful commitment to the welfare of one another. Sex is not just about the union of two bodies but about two beings (husband and wife).
The Word of God says regarding marriage "they shall become one flesh" (Gen. 2:24). Since sex is essentially about the intimacy between two married persons (husband and wife), not merely two physical bodies (any bodies), such union was euphemistically described in this way: "Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain" (Gen. 4:1). "And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth" (Gen. 4:25).
Sex is one of God's greatest gifts to a married couple. When a husband and wife have sex together, they do not just enjoy their bodies, but also mutual intimacy, love, and commitment. Without this, even sex in marriage becomes dry and dissatisfying.
Because sex is about intimacy within marriage, between husband and wife who are committed to each other to love, care, and relish—acts such as abusive sex (even within marriage), pornography, pre-marital and extra-marital sex, gay or lesbian sex—are considered sin and have detrimental consequences.
May we flee from the false messages of Hollywood and Bollywood movies, and polluted culture, and gain appropriate understanding about what sex actually is from the Word of God and practice accordingly for our welfare.
