Pon Manickavel  Review

Star Cast : Prabhu Deva, Nivetha Pethuraj, Suresh Chandra Menon, Sudhanshu Pandey
Director : AC Mugil

Debutant director AC Mugil's Pon Manickavel is a formulaic cop action thriller that has a few interesting elements like the #MeToo angle but offers nothing new. It's predictable from the word go although the director has tried his best to stay true to the plot and the proceedings.

When a judge gets murdered, cops in Tamil Nadu are clueless and are unable to nab the murderer. So in a meeting, they suggest our hero Pon Manickavel (Prabhu Deva), a deputy commissioner to take charge. But when he takes up the case, we get to know that he is not showing any interest. Slowly, we also begin to think that he might be offended or hurt by the corrupt system. Can Pon Manickavel solve the case and bring laurel to the cops and punish the culprit?

As discussed earlier, Pon Manickavel would've been an engaging watch if it got released fifteen years back but now, it looks too old as we have seen so many cop action entertainers. The heroic glorification doesn't add up much and the romantic angle between Prabhu Deva and Nivetha Pethuraj also ends up formulaic.

Prabhu Deva plays the cop for the first time but he is a misfit for the role, although he has tried to come out of his usual mannerisms and body language. The rest of the actors including Nivetha Pethuraj, Suresh Chandra Menon, Sudhanshu Pandey are not up to the mark in the film.

Imman's music is strictly functional and KG Venkatesh's cinematography is adequate for a template commercial film.

To sum up, Pon Manickavel is your mundane cop-action thriller that can be watched on Disney +Hotstar if you feel bored and running out of any interesting content.
