Why Badminton Is the Most Intense Sport Ever.

Next to football (to some, soccer), badminton is the second most popular sport in the world, according to ESPN. Over 1.1 billion people tuned in to watch badminton in the 1996 Olympics making it the most watched sport during those games.

Often seen as a backyard activity played during socials events and BBQs in the West, it's considered a professional sport in Asia and Europe that often records almost full attendance in stadiums during major tournaments and competitions.

Highly underrated despite it's popularity, the people in the West often rate badminton as a "weak" sport compared to tennis. Here are few reasons to why badminton is an intense sport.

The world's fastest tennis serve was clocked at 163.7mph at the 2012 Busan Open Challenger Tennis by Samuel Groth. However, in comparison, the world's fastest badminton smash is clocked at 253.5mph by Malaysian pro Datuk Lee Chong Wei at the 2015 Hong Kong Open.

While some might argue that a player runs more in tennis due to larger court, here's statistics to prove otherwise.

After every point, tennis players are allowed to rest and cool off while in badminton, towelling down is a rare scenario and a player might get warned by the umpire if you do it without his/her permission. This also means that the rules for badminton are harsher compared to tennis players.
