Starting from ‘Chennai 600028′, till ‘Biriyani’ through even films like ‘Saroja’ and ‘Mankathaa’, Venkat Prabhu has been observed to have a very causal and lighthearted way of narrating even the most intense of stories. But now, he declared he wanted to try something different, and roped in Suriya to play the lead for his upcoming dream ‘Masss’. Initial talks about the movie suggested that it might be titled ‘Poochandi’, until official confirmation from the director himself. Work on ‘Masss’ started in July this year; but even now, only very little information is available on the movie, because Venkat Prabhu wants this to be a thriller that is filed with suspense. On that regard, we know that one look of the lead’s will sport long hair, while the second of his dual roles is a complete suspense. Masss’ has had the distinction of being the first Indian film to shoot in 3D from the first frame. It is jointly produced by Studio Green and Suriya’s venture, 2D Productions.
Nayanthara and Pranita play female leads. Poster of ‘Masss’ was released on Diwali, with Suriya’s face carrying an intense expression. The film has Venkat Prabhu’s standard crew of Yuvan Shankar Raja on music and Praveen on editing. As for Yuvan, he has revealed that his work on the film is very different from what he has done previously; in fact, there is a song in a movie that’s a tribute for Michael Jackson. The composer has reportedly used very different sounds for the film’s album. However, Venkat has replaced his standard cinematographer Sakthi Saravanan with RD Rajasekhar. Dialogues for the film are penned down by lyricist Madhan Karky.
Jayaram and Parthiepan play prominent roles in the thriller. Later, Vidhyullekha Raman, Premgi Amaran and Samuthirakani also confirmed their presence in the movie. Actors Karunas, Sriman and Daniel Annie Pope (of ‘Idharkuthaane Aasaipattai Balakumara) confirmed their presence in tge movie as spirits. In all, ‘Masss’ is an experience new not only to Venkat Prabhu, but also to audience, on the grounds of being a supernatural thriller.

Makers of Suriya’s ‘Masss’ have apparently set March 2015 as deadline for the movie’s release. “The film may hit the screens on 27 March,” say sources. Directed by Venkat Prabhu, ‘Masss’, which is being made in Tamil and Telugu, is produced by Studio Green and Suriya’s newly floated 2D Entertainment.
Nayanthara and Pranitha are the leading ladies, while Premgi Amaran plays a key role. Music is being composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Shooting is currently on near Chennai.

At the recent Nanbenda audio launch, Suriya said “You can see a completely different Nayanthara in Masss. I’ve worked with her in past and she took a break in middle but now it is refreshing to see the new energetic Nayanthara in Masss”.
It is worth a mention that Nayanthara will also been as Karthi’s pair in Kashmora which is to be directed by Gokul of Idharku Thaane Aasaipattai Balakumara fame.

Venkat Prabhu’s ‘Masss’ will travel to Pondichery and Bangkok for the final schedule. We had reported that the talkie portions of the movie have been already over and the team will be shooting the songs and fight sequences in this schedule.
The makers are targeting to complete the shooting formalities by the end of February and locked the Tamil New Year as the tentative dates for the releases.
Nayanthara will be romancing Suriya for the second time while Praneetha will be seen in a special character.
'Masss' unit shifts from Bulgaria to Pondy

Masss team has successfully completed the Bulgaria shoot and they are recently camped at Pondichery.
Sources say that Suriya, Venkat Prabhu, Pranitha, Riyaz Khan, Samuthirakani. Subbu Panju, Stunt choreographer Silva have reached Pondichery for the shoot.
Masss is touted to be a unique horror thriller which has Nayanthara playing the female lead and Premgi Amaren, Karunas, Sriman and many others in supporting roles.

Now the latest we hear is that the team is canning a dare devil stunt sequence at Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. It is said that the particular action scene will feature Suriya, Parthiepan, Samuthirakani and Riyaz Khan while Stunt Silva has choreographed the fight sequence.

Sources say that poster has symbolically revealed Suriya's character in the film. It is said that Suriya is playing a small time con in Masss and hence the rupee symbol in his coolers and also an ear stud.

The grapevine has it that Yuvan who did not deliver the songs on time has irked Studio Green the producers and hero Suriya. Remember that Masss team has already announced the release date as May 1 and the unit is working round the clock in brisk pace to finish the film on time. A lot of CG work has to be done as Masss is a supernatural thriller.
A source from the unit says that Suriya was mighty pissed off as Yuvan did not deliver the song on time and whatever he gave, were not up to the mark. The production unit had already planned to shoot this particular song with Suriya and Nayanthara at Mohan studio where a huge set was erected.
So Thaman was roped in by Studio Green in the last minute and he quickly remixed a hit number from Hindi film R... Rajkumar. For obvious reasons, director Venkat Prabhu seems to be upset with Suriya's decision and on condition of anonymity our sources say that a miffed Yuvan who heard about the replacement has refused to compose the background score of Masss hence there is a huge confusion prevailing in the unit.
Mean time, Masss cinematographer RD Rajasekar is busy with AR Murugadoss' Hindi film and hence Venkat Prabhu has roped in Sakthi Saravanan to shoot this particular remix composed by Thaman and Baba Bhaskar is the choreographer.

Music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja held a press meet to announce May 9 as the date of his grand concert at Tirunelveli. He also added that Puthuyugam TV will be the television partner and the funds from the concert will be used to plant trees across Tamilnadu by Green Trees Solution.

Bhavatharini, Venkat Prabhu, Premgi and top singers from Kollywood and Bollywood. As a part of the event Maestro Ilayaraja will perform the most memorable medley of his songs and will also be honoured for composing music for over 1000 songs.

Meanwhile Kamal Haasan’s big budget Ramesh Aravind directed Thirrupathy Brothers produced Uttama Villain which was supposed to release for Tamil New Year on April 10 has been postponed. The new release date thrown around is May 1.
Remember Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC), has also issued a dikat that big hero films that cost more than Rs 15 Crore can only release during festival or important national holidays (May 1, August 15). Already Tamil New Year date has lapsed, and now only May 1 remains in this quarter. It means Mass and Uttama Villain has to release on May 1, otherwise will have to be pushed to July 17 Ramzan (Eid) release date!
Studio Green spokesperson says that they will stick to May 1 release date and will shortly start booking screens. The spokesperson said :“ The shooting of Masss is over and the actors are busy completing the dubbing work. The VFX and graphic work is going on simultaneously.”
At the same time there is no clarity from Uttama Villain producers of a clear release date, as some financial issues have to be sorted out.

Just like any other Venkat Prabhu movie, Masss too comes up with an interesting caption ‘A Venkat Prabhu Sixer’. Remember the director used unique and catchy captions including ‘A Venkat Prabhu Holiday’ in Goa, ‘A Venkat Prabhu Game’ in Mankatha and ‘A Venkat Prabhu Diet’ in Biriyani.

The audio launch of Suriya’s Masss is likely to happen on May 8 (Friday) and an official announcement will be made soon.
Sources say that Yuvan has given the master CD long back while Eros Music will be releasing the audio across the globe.
Directed by Venkat Prabhu, Masss also has Nayanthara, Pranitha, Premgi Amaren and many others to its star cast.
Studio Green, the producers of the film have earlier announced that the film will be releasing on May 15 and they have already sold the worldwide theatrical rights to Eros International.
Few weeks before, Masss team has released the first look teaser of the film which has garnered more than two million views in You Tube.

Sources say that the team is working 24*7 with the post-production and also as Suriya is busy with the shooting of 24, the audio launch of Masss is likely to happen at a popular FM station in Chennai.

As reported earlier, Masss team is not opting for grand audio launch function and the audio CDs will be directly available in stores from today (May 8) evening and also the digital version will be available on iTunes.
Though there is no formal audio launch in big auditorium with the gracious presence of big shot celebrities who consume an entire day with their so called appreciation speeches, team Masss is planning to unveil the audio through social networking platforms and also in five different FM channels.
Yes, Eros Music South who is holding the audio rights of Masss has said that their Twitter handle will be officially unveiling all the five tracks from 9 AM to 5 PM throughout the day.

The high octane title track! Therikkudhu Masss is a superbly arranged track with a jaded tune. The initial build up for the track in the prelude leads upto a jaded pallavi. The interludes, enriched with the title hook are completely catchy. Shankar Mahadevan has a forgettable outing because the best portions of the song are the interludes & the ‘Therikkudhu Masss’ chants that could serve as a hot ringtone material.
There is also a fast paced remix version of the same track with added layer of fast beats by Premji made for the discos & clubs. Being a Venkat Prabhu movie, it is safe to expect this remix version in the end credits.

Easily, the best track of the album! Chinmayee & Karthik own this track with a soothing rendition. ‘Naan Aval Illai’ is a neatly composed melody where the charanam portions sound better than the pallavi. The song actually takes a leap with the bagpipe like interlude (something with Yuvan experimented in Mounam Pesiyadhey). The background dubstep arrangement fuses greatly with the tune & the lyrics thus making it a brilliant track.
Piravi

Vaikom Vijayalakshmi, who last sang for Yuvan in ‘Idam Porul Eval’ reunites with the composer for a haunting track. ‘Piravi’ is that sort of a haunting track which doesn't need spooky sound effects to act as fillers. Instead, the mood of the song does it with the help of gothic chorus portions. The lyrics depict rebirth (birth as a ghost again,unfulfilled wishes) which give us a hint about the theme of the movie(Kalyanaraman?). All set to play a pivotal role in the movie along with the visuals!

‘Poochandi’ eats up the ‘fun track’ quota of the album. Yuvan renders it himself with the help of autotune. The tune is unsettling initially with spooky effects that make an appearance at most places in the album. All the added ‘laugh’ effects & foot-tapping beats give us a ‘Mangaatha’ hangover though.
Although starting off with template Punjabi beats, the Con Man theme stands out as a terrific residue of the Therikudhu Masss track where dubstep takes the centre stage with synthesizers. Has the potential to be a goosebump inducing bgm if used at an appropriate juncture in the movie. The Masss Theme has similar arrangements when it comes to the instruments in addition to a lot of spooky effects that muster by.
On the whole, Yuvan Shankar Raja, who was in a horrible patch (except a fairly decent ‘Idam Porul Eval’) makes a comeback of sorts with ‘Masss’. Although not in the same league as other Venkat Prabhu-YSR albums, ‘Masss’ still works thanks to some foot tapping techno in most of the tracks. The melody & the haunting pathos work well, making this a decent album.

Suriya Masss which was earlier scheduled to release on May 15 has been officially postponed to May 29 and the film’s producer Gnanavelraja has announced it at the teaser launch of Rakshasudu—the Telugu version of Masss.
“Dear all Masss n Rakshsudu on May 29th.. release worldwide!! Thank you for the big support on the audio today! lets chat soon this weekend” posted Suriya in his Twitter page.
The audio launch of Suriya’s Masss has happened yesterday (May 8) and six different heroes, STR, Karthi, Arya, Dhanush, Udhayanidhi and Madhavan unveiled all the six tracks composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja.

Suriya’s Venkat Prabhu directed Masss produced by Studio Green had its first press meet in Chennai. Speaking at the function director Venkat Prabhu said “While working with Karthi in Biriyani, I narrated a line to Gjanavel and he later conveyed it to Suriya, that’s how Masss happened but the tread what I narrated is not there in the film now”.
Venkat Prabhu had initially narrated a simple love story to Suriya but the director later thought that his combination with Suriya should not be simple and opted for a better script.
“Masss will not have any drinking or smoking scenes which are regular things in my previous works. To be precise, the film will appeal to all including kids", said Venkat Prabhu at the press meet. The director added “ Masss is the toughest project in my career in which I've actually tried to tell a story and a lot of thought process went into writing. I got inputs from SS Rajamouli’s script assistant Kannan and my former assistants who are directors now”
Suriya said that the film has been titled after his character name Masssilamani and Masss is the short form of his character’s name. The actor also clarified that the Masss is a spooky film and it will be different from all the Tamil horror films that have released so far.
Suriya, Venkat Prabhu, costume designer Vasuki Baskar and the film’s producer Gjnavel Raja said one thing in common—just like any other friends they had arguments while making the movie but it’s all for the betterment of the project and nothing personal.
Earlier two songs, Therrikuthu Therrikuthu Masss and Poochandi were screened and the visuals were colorful and impressive. The team officially announced that Masss will be releasing on May 29 in both Tamil and Telugu.
'Masss' is ready, gearing up for censor

Suriya’s Masss is gearing up for censor, the latest we hear is that Yuvan has finished composing the background score of the film and DI work is under progress.
We also hear that the film will get censored by this week and the promotions are in full throttle. Suriya, Venkat Prabhu, Premgi, Yuvan Shankar Raja and editor Praveen are currently in Hyderabad and they will be promoting the film there till Wednesday.
Suriya is also planning to visit neighboring states like Kerala and Karnataka to promote Masss. The film’s Kerala distribution rights are with Sopanam films and reports say that the price quoted is more than 3.5 crs(approx), which is the highest among all Suriya movies in Kerala.
Similarly the Karnataka distribution rights of Masss is with popular distributor Srikanth for a record price. Early estimates say that film will be releasing in more than 1500 screens on May 29.

Suriya’s Masss has got a clean ‘U’ certificate from the censor board. Now, if the team changes the title into a Tamil word, they could probably get tax exemption provided by Tamil Nadu government.
Right from the beginning, the paper advertisement of the film had only the title ‘Masss’ but from yesterday, the team has added a caption ‘Masss Engira Massilamani’.
Now the big question is, will the Tamil Nadu government grant tax exemption for this new title? Sources say that the team will be soon applying for the tax exemption and by next week, we will get a clear picture.

Suriya to visit Kerala for 'Masss' promotions

Today (May 25) Suriya will be visiting Kochi, Kerala to promote his upcoming film Massu Engira Masilamani. Sources say that the event will be happening at LuLu Mall in the city and the film is likely to release in 150 screens in Kerala alone.
The makers have first advertised the film as Masss, later they changed it into Masss Engira Masilamani and now they have locked Massu Engira Masilamani.
While chatting with Sify.com , the film’s director Venkat Prabhu said “We don’t want to lose the tax exemption and hence we are opting for a title which will fetch us one. Actually, Masss is a short form of Masilamani, the character of Suriya in the film and as it’s not a Tamil name, we have changed it as Massu Engira Masilamani now”.

Suriya’s Maasu Engira Maasilamani is all set to release on May 29 and now the final running time of the film has been revealed.
According to the censor certificate issued, the running time of the film is 152 minutes which also includes the statutory warning slides.
As the film has got ‘U’ certificate, the team has applied for tax exemption from Tamil Nadu government with their new Tamil title ‘Maasu Engira Maasilamani’ but the verdict is yet to be known.

Massu Engira Maasilamani' Review

It's been a long time since Suriya played a role which has solid screen presence. Venkat Prabhu has made sure that the diehard fans of Suriya should enjoy Masssu Engira Maasilamani and one can say that he has achieved it to an extent.
Massu aka Maasilamani (Suriya) is a small time con in the company of his close friend Jetli aka Jetu (Premgi Amaren). Massu falls in love with Manini (Nayanthara) who needs Rs 3.5 Lakhs to bribe her hospital doctor (Brahmanandam) so that she can become the head nurse. Massu promises her that he will get the required money.
Meanwhile, Massu and Jettu snatch a large amount of cash from a powerful don named Reddy. Trying to escape from the goons, their car overturns in a road accident. From that point onwards, Massu gets a supernatural power through which he sees a group of ghosts who want Massu to fulfill their wishes.
In turn Massu starts using them to deceive people who believe in paranormal activities and runs a successful business as a ghostbuster.
Everything goes fine, till Massu meets a ghost called Shakthi (another Suriya) who looks exactly like him. Now Shakthi deceives Massu to take revenge against people who killed him and his family. Who is Shakthi? Why he is using Massu to take revenge against his enemies? What’s the relationship between Massu and Shakthi? To know the answers, watch the film on the big screen.
Massu Engira Maasilamani is a no-holds barred entertainer with all essential ingredients. There are twists and turns galore. Suriya sporting a ponytail as the Sri Lankan Tamil living in Canada, is the highlight of the film. He comes in at the interval point and steals the show. Nayanthara has a brief romantic track with Maasilamani while Pranitha is Sakthi's pair in the flashback.
Venkat Prabhu has once again given his brother Premgi a meaty role as a friendly ghost. He simply rocks. Parthiepan who comes as a corrupt cop steals the show. The rest of the actors including Samuthirakani, Rajendran, and Karunas are adequate.
Technically, RD Rajasekar's cinematography is commendable and Yuvan Shankar Raja's background score acts as another hero in the film while Praveen KL's editing has helped the film to flow at a fast pace. The end-credits bloopers make you laugh.
Despite the above said positives, the film doesn't have a big story-line and is sluggish in the first half. Had the director spent more time on writing, Massu would have been a better entertainer but now it’s yet another mass masala film with feel good spooky elements and the powerful Shakthi as bonus points.
'Masss' will be Suriya’s biggest release

Suriya's Studio Green produced Massu Engira Maasilamani is all set to release worldwide on May 29. KE Gnanavelraja, the producer of the film tells us that they are planning to release it in 1850-1900 screens worldwide.
Gnanavelraja said: “Maasu Engira Maasilamani will be the biggest release in Suriya’s career. In Tamil Nadu, Studio Green is releasing the film in nearly 425 screens, which is huge and getting best of screens and prime time in multiplexes.”
Interestingly, the screen count in Andhra Pradesh (AP) / Telengana (TG) for Masss is more than Tamil Nadu. Masss will be releasing in around 570 screens in AP/TG. The film will also release in 142 screens in Kerala, 100 screens in Karnataka and 140 screens in rest of India.
In south India Studio Green is planning to release it at the same time on Friday morning at 8.01 am. Earlier it was announced that there will be special shows at 5 am in Kerala, which now has been pushed to 8.01 am.
Masss will be releasing in 670 screens in overseas and all together, the makers are planning to release the film in nearly 1850-1900 screens across the globe.

A day before the release,director Venkat Prabhu has revealed the biggest suspense of Suriya's Massu Engira Maasilamani! The actor is playing a Sri Lankan Tamil in the film.
Sources say that Suriya plays a dual role in the film, Shakthi and Maasilamani, among the two, Shakthi is said to be a Sri Lankan Tamil. Venkat Prabhu tweeted: "As u all know @Suriya_offl plays a dual role in #masss and one of the character he plays a ஈழ தமிழன் 4 the first time!!”

Suriya’s Massu Engira Maasilamani which got released yesterday (May 29) has created meme war between Ajith and Vijay fans in social networking sites.
Director Venkat Prabhu is always known for using famous punch lines of Ajith and Vijay in his movies. For example, Premgi used ‘Evlavo Panitom Idha Panna Matoma’ in Ajith’s Mankatha which is Vijay’s dialogue in Azhagiya Tamizh Magan.
In Massu Engira Maasilamani , Venkat Prabhu has used Vijay’s Kaththi BGM in a scene where Suriya takes a knife from his pocket and also the hit song ‘Megamai Vandhu Pogiren’ from Vijay’s movie Thullatha Manamum Thullum.
Venkat Prabhu also used the famous ‘My F***ing game’ line from Ajith’s Mankatha in Massu Engira Maasilamani ‘s interval block.
But the real issue among Thala and Thalapathy fans is that a scene where Suriya and Premgi comes in a disguise of Navy officers , Venkat Prabhu has named Suriya as Jagadish (name of Vijay in Thuppakki) and Premgi as Vinayak Mahadev (Ajith’s name in Mankatha). Some Ajith fans is said to have tweeted that how the director could name a comedian with Ajith’s name and Vijay fans have used the opportunity to troll Ajith.
