Kannan and Ratha





Kannan and Ratha are childhood sweethearts that have promised to remain faithful to one another for as long as they both shall live.  Theirs is a match made in heaven.  Their parents have been friends for a long time, and they have accepted the fact that, someday, their children will get married and start a family of their own.
 
Anyone who sees them would think that they are two people very much in love with each other.  Their friends can only hope they will one day find a love that was as true and lasting as theirs.
 
Little did anyone suspect that their relationship will go through something very painful and tragic.  You see, Ratha recently sought the help of their family doctor because her headaches have become frequent, and she can hardly get up from bed every time she had one of her headaches.
 
She didn’t tell anyone that she went to see the doctor, not even Kannan knew.  This morning, she found out that her headaches were caused by a tumor they found inside her head.  Until they open her up, they will never know her chances of survival.
 
“Why now?  Why is this happening to me?”  She cried out.  “Please don’t let me die!”  She pleaded.
 
How will she tell her parents what was going on?  How can she break her lover’s heart with this very sad news?  As these questions run through her mind, she knew that she had to face the truth sooner or later.  She knew she had to tell them.  She had to prepare them for what could happen after the operation.
 
She prepared a sumptuous feast one evening, and she invited both her family and Kannan’s family for dinner.  She wanted to tell them together.  They deserved to know.  After dinner that night, she broke the bad news.  Everyone was in shock.  Her parents were inconsolable, as was Kannan and his family.
 
“We will fight this!”  Her parents determinedly said.
 
Kannan, on the other hand, simply took her in his arms and cried.
 
“I can’t bear losing you!”  He whispered as he was hugging her.
 
Ratha put on a brave face and told them everything will be all right.  That had been six months ago.  This afternoon, everyone will gather once more just like on the evening that she cooked for them.  Later, they will bury her and hold on to the thought that they will all be together again someday.
