(http://smile-lover.com/picture/albums/myIMG/img3/Animation/Animated%20Picture/thumb_Rajini.gif) SUPER STAR ANTHEM (http://smile-lover.com/picture/albums/myIMG/img3/Animation/Animated%20Picture/thumb_Rajini.gif)
It's Rajinikanth's birthday today. It's also the day when his much awaited film Lingaa is releasing.
The first Indian actor to appear in four different forms of cinema – black and white, colour, 3-D, and motion capture – Rajinikanth turns 64 on Friday.
From his first film Apoorva Raagangal (1975) to Lingaa, from playing the twisted bad boy to becoming the impartial dispenser of justice, Rajini’s journey has been remarkable indeed. He has not won a National Award for his performances yet but his reign in cinema is indisputably the stuff of legend!
The release of a Rajini film is much like a festival in Tamil Nadu and indeed, most parts of the world where Tamil fans reside. For people outside the state, this kind of frenzy is hard to understand. One Rajini film is not too different from another, after all. The characters are largely caricatures; there are stereotypes everywhere you look; the scripts run along cliched narratives. And yet, it is all these hackneyed elements combined with Rajini’s tremendous screen presence that makes every film such a delight for his fans. His films are formulaic but the formula is alchemic.
There are other popular film stars who are loved throughout the country but Rajini-mania is quite the unique phenomenon. Rajini doesn’t do ads, he doesn’t promote any brands. He is a brand in himself and one that is so saleable that advertising is unnecessary. Even the packaging is pretty unimportant. Rajini is not afraid to show his bald head or unmade face to his fans. Unlike other superstars who are very careful to keep up appearances when they appear in public, Rajini has never attempted to sell himself as something he is not.
In the audio launch of Robot, he thanked Aishwarya Rai for accepting to be his heroine and recounted a funny anecdote about his brother’s Rajasthani neighbour who was unable to comprehend why the former Miss World would consent to acting with a balding, aged man like him! The ability to laugh at one-self is appreciable in anyone but to see it in someone who is revered to this extent is singular. Especially when the subject of the joke happens to be appearance and the person belongs to an industry where Botox injections and plastic surgeries are a dime a dozen.
The hype surrounding Lingaa is even higher than usual because it’s been four years since his fans saw him in a regular 'Thalaivar' film. Kochadaiiyaan had some of the style and some of the swagger but it was by no means as satisfying a watch as a Baasha or Padayappa for the folks who cannot get enough of him. Besides, Rajini was hospitalized in early 2011 and for a while, it seemed unlikely that the king would return to his throne. In the audio launch of Lingaa, Rajini admitted that there were moments during that period when he thought his acting career was over. Rana, once again a KS Ravikumar project, had to be shelved because of his poor health but much to the relief of his fans, the S.U.P.E.R.S.T.A.R is back with a bang!
We wish him a very happy birthday and hope (more for our sake than his) that Lingaa proves to be as entertaining a watch as the trailers promise.
Happy birthday THALAIVA The one and only SUPERSTAR 8) 8)

Behind forty years, seven languages and more than a 170 movies is one person – the man, the style, the star, the legend of Indian cinema, the cultural icon of a country of 121 millions. Put your hands together for Thalaivar, who turns 64 years young today! Shivaji Rao Gaekwad was born Maratha, did many odd jobs in early days including being a bus conductor, got himself iconised ironically exempting his own mother tongue, humble to the hilt, stylish to its stilts… And here’s more:
- Rajini’s sizes haven’t changed for 25 years – source: his tailor!
- Years back, 3 fans of Rajini’s died in a car accident, on his birthday. Ever since, Rajinikanth celebrates his birthday, outside of the city – Rajini’s inclination to Babaji started when he was as young as 16 – He was raised by his elder brotherRajini’s stylish cigarette stunt is older than his film career
- The inclusion of a song with a social message in all his movies, is deliberately intended
- Rajini was an athiest until a massive transformation made him a staunch devotee and a spiritual individual
- Superstar is the highest paid actor, in all of Asia! He attained this recognition, after bagging a higher salary than Jackie Chan
- Rajini afforests as often as he canUntil recently, Rajini used only a humble Fiat Padmini, before changing to the sturdy Ambassador, for his commute
- Rajinikanth is the only actor of recent times to have acted in all four milestone technologies of cinema – black and white, colour, 3D and motion capture
- No matter how early in his life you might have met him, he would definitely remember your nameRajinikanth is always punctual
- Bangalore marks Thalaivar’s hangout spot with his friendsRajini will definitely break to Himalayas to indulge in meditation, after every movie schedule
- ‘Kuselan’ is inspired from the life of himself and his close friend Bahadur
- Back in the prime of his youth, it was Bahadur who rekindled the acting interest for Rajini, while he was still a bus conductor
- Amidst all other languages, Rajini has acted in one English and Bengali movie each
- Thalaivar has consistent fan following across the globe; he is worshipped in equal status as in India, in Japan too, though they don’t follow Tamil!
So much to his credit, and yet he is humble and down to earth. With the release of Superstar’s 173rd film, idol of all times, Thalaivar celebrates his 64th year of humble evergreen youth and style. Join us in wishing Rajinikanth all luck and happiness. We as his fans wish our dear Thalaivar all wellness, a million smiles and a very, very happy birthday!
