'Kathakali'-Audio review

Cast: Vishal,Catherine Teresa,Karunas
Music: Hiphop Thamizha
Direction: Pandiyaraj

Album Analysis:
Azhage
Singers: Hiphop Thamizha
Easily, the pick of the lot! ‘Azhage’ is yet another peppy romantic track sung by Aadhi in his usual style. The ‘ponmalai chaaral’ portions deserve a special mention as they are catchy to the core. The song sets the tone for montage picturization on screen. Addictive Earworm!

Kathakali Theme
Singers: Hiphop Thamizha
The pulsating theme music! Loaded with heavy percussion & typical Kathakali instruments, the theme music tries to develop the sense of mood for the film. There are traces of dubstep fused with these instruments as well. Expect this to feature extensively in the re-recording & title sequence.

Erangi Vandhu
Singers: Hiphop Thamizha, Anthony Dasan
A mandatory ‘kuthu’ track to please the front benchers. Shades of auto-tuning are there throughout the rendition. The arrangements are somewhat jarring and reminds us of ‘Madras to Madurai’ track from Aambala. The nadaswaram ridden interludes are typical Aadhi-ish. The entire track is too loud for us to sink in and enjoy it.

Kathakali Whistle
Singers: Hiphop Thamizha
Kathakali Whistle starts off a bit pleasant and takes a more serious tone as it progresses. This track serves more like an extension of the theme music and works better at that. Impactful!

After a roaring ‘Thani Oruvan’, Hiphop Thamizha plays to the gallery of the movie here by sticking to the movie’s demands. A romantic number, a kuthu number & couple of theme music pieces make the album crisp & to the point.

'Kathakali' is based on a real life story:Vishal

In a recent media interaction, Vishal revealed that his upcoming film, Kathakali is loosely based on a real life incident. The actor has also said that the film is a murder mystery with suspense prevails throughout .

“There is a character called Thamba, who gets murdered and the rest of the story will actually reveal the real murderer”, said Vishal, who also added that the second half of the film doesn’t have any songs.

“There is an intro song and a romantic track but besides that the film demands powerful background score and I’m really looking forward for Hiphop Tamizha’s work in the second half”, said Vishal.

“The two songs too won’t have 40 dancers at the backdrop, Pandiraj has made everything subtle and there are many cute moments in the film”, added the actor.

Generally, mobile phones play an important role in Pandiraj’s films and in Kathakali too, a single call changes the protagonist’s life. The actor has said that the particular selfie shot, which he sends to the villain in the trailer has got great response.

About his heroine Catherine Tresa, Vishal says “She plays B.Pharm graduate in the film, who runs a pharmacy. She is a very pretty looking girl and will be an integral part of the film”.

“What I really like about Pandiraj is that he listens to everyone’s suggestions and incorporate, if it is really for the betterment of the film. His dialogues are never preachy and it will be realistic”, concluded Vishal.

Sri Thenandal Films will be releasing Kathakali on January 14, 2016.

Kathakali Review

Director Pandiraj's Kathakali is a brilliantly written riveting murder mystery with engaging screenplay and crisp running time.

Although the initial portions of Kathakali are filled with inconspicuous love angle and friendship, the tempo rises towards the intermission and from then on, there is no looking back.

Amuthan(Vishal) comes from USA to hometown Cuddalore for his love marriage with Meenu Kutty (Catherine Tresa). Amuthan's family has an enmity with the local gangster Thamba( Madhusudhanan) and when he gets mysteriously murdered, his wife, gang members and cop (Sreejith Ravi) suspect Amuthan and his brother( Mime Gopi).

The rest of the film is a cat and mouse game between the cunning cop and Amuthan till the final twist happens in the climax.

Kathakali's biggest strength is the water tight screenplay of director Pandiraj, his intriguing writing is top notch as he makes audience guessing with twists and turns at regular intervals. Not just with the script, the director has perfectly set a one-day thriller with plenty of night and rain shots, which gives a unique style quotient to the film.

This is undoubtedly Vishal's best and subtle performance in recent times, especially the actor's tall masculine physique fits his mysterious characterization and makes the high octane action sequence convincing with extra energy and punch. Catherine Tresa looks bubbly and cute under cinematographer Bala Subramaniam's lens though her character lacks credibility. The rest of the actors including Mime Gopi, Karunas and Pawan have done commendable job. Madhusudhanan, who comes as Thamba is a revelation, while Malayalam actor Sreejith Ravi is believable.

Kathakali's another big asset are the raw action sequences, especially the selfie one at the bus stand and climax fight which are brilliantly choreographed . Although Hiphop Tamizha's songs are okay, he has compensated with pulsating BGM.

Overall, Kathakali is an edge of the seat murder mystery, which should not be missed.
