An Excited Trip To Anasazi Ruins, Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado

Mesa Verde National Park is situated in Montezuma County, Colorado, USA and is the biggest archaeological preserve in the U.S. The park was established in 1906 to protect the best conserved cliff dwellings worldwide by then president Theodore Roosevelt. Today it is still the only remaining cultural national park that spans some 211 square kilometres and features more than 4 000 archaeological sites. It has over 600 cliff dwellings of the Pueblo people or sometimes known as the Anasazi (ancient people) in addition a number of ruins of homes and villages of these ancestral people at the site. From history it shows evidence that these people lived from 600 - 1300 in Mesa Verde. The population increased so by the 13th century the construction of structures were built within the caves and underneath the cliff dwellings, and the most impressive being the Cliff Palace before leaving in the 15th century. Relics suggest that the ancestors were farmers who grew mainly corn which was their main diet and hunted for their survival. Women weaved baskets and made pottery which from relics is highly valued today, as there were no written records kept. The Mesa National park has some of the finest and prominent preserved archaeological sites in the country, and attracts historical visitors every year to the site.



Today Mesa Verde National Park located in south west Colorado has been awarded the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site and boast ruins and relics dating as far back as the 13th century. It attracts visitors to its stunning historical cliff dwellings and structures that have been preserved in the huge national park. The park is located in wonderful scenery and is a great place to discover. Long before the Europeans inhabited the  New World a group of Indians from four corners of the Mesa Verde decided to make the location their home. The inhabitants prospered and eventually constructed elaborate stone cities and cliff dwellings in  the walls of canyons. The life around the ancient ones or the Anasazi is still an  amazing story to archaeologists today. Many excavations and analysis have been made to learn about their lives and how they survived from the ruins and exhibits found more than a century ago when the cliff dwellings were first founded by local cowboys in the region. The ruins speak louder than words, and although today nobody knows the full story of these ancient people as there are no written artefacts, the buildings and crafts have left an impression on how skills were developed and passed on through generations. Evidence discovered demonstrates how skills were built and traditions passed on in living and culture. The Anasazi made the most from the surrounding nature and built under the cliffs with the basic stone that was in the area, and formed small rooms using basic mud and water to stick the blocks together. Men made tools, knives and axes from stone and bone. Women weaved, cooked and made pottery.



The Anasazi people appeared to have survived without metal and with only the use of stone. They shaped stone, bone and wood to make tools for various uses including cutting, chopping and weaving. Sticks were used for digging and bows and arrows made for hunting. Wooden spindles were invented for weaving, and bones formed for sewing raw hides. Clothes were from woven cloth and animal skin. Finding food was an endless task, and the farming of corn would have been helped with the wild plants that grew in the area and the hunting of game, deer, squirrels and rabbits. Much of their existence is only know from their rubbish and waste scraps of food, pottery, and tools that were tossed down the front slopes of their houses. The weather would have proved tedious in the winter particularly in finding food. As there are no written records nothing is known about religion, political and social intervention of these ancient people and the life of the Anasazi. Archaeologists guess that the life was similar to that of today's modern Pueblo people of Arizona and New Mexico and families spanning generations probably lived together in the same house. As the family grew the more rooms were built.



The economy within these communities developed through the ages and skills were learnt and taught. Weaving and pottery gave them a surplus that they could trade among other villages for other wears such as shells, pottery and cotton. The Anasazi were excellent potters and made cooking and storage vessels such as tools, jugs, bowls, canteens and mugs. It is an interesting  insight to how these communities survived and lived from such basic finds. The facts behind the Mesa Verde site are truly an amazing piece of history to how these nomadic people lived and how skilful they were at crafting and hunting. As time progressed the population increased and they became more and more skilled at their crafts such as basket weaving and pottery. More houses were built along the cliff shelters. These people lived around a 100 years in the cliff top houses before deserting them. The whereabouts of the Anasazi are unsure, but as there are no written resources it is speculated that they left the region at a time when drought and crop failure was recorded. It may have been due to over use of farming the land, and the soil, animals and forest dwindled. They may have heads south to Arizona and New Mexico where today Pueblo Indians successors still live.



This amazing location is great to visit almost any time of year, but it is worth checking as schedules change with the season. Campground and lodgings are situated nearby but some camp sites close during the winter season. An entrance fee is payable and tickets are required for the guided tours. It is best you allow a few days to be able to appreciate the site, and visit several dwellings. Biking and hiking are allowed in certain areas and can be a great way to explore the park. The Mesa Verde National Park has the Anasazi Heritage Centre and is a federal museum, which is a research centre and has an abundance of records and relics. The centre is close to other archaeological sites and is an interesting place with so much to see and learn about this fascinating historical site. You will also find local Native American cultures and special exhibits on display. There are also events held to help visitors learn about this magnificent part of history. The museum has a lot to see, and you are invited to use touch exhibits with microscopes, computers a loom for weaving and other implements. Special guest speakers, a library and film are also a great opportunity to learn more about this amazing cultural site.


            The Mesa Verde National Park and the Anasazi Ruins in Colorado are set in a beautiful part of the United States, surrounded by beautiful landscape. The area has a substantial amount of wildlife and it is common to see Mule deer, squirrels, skunks, coyotes, gray fox and wild Turkeys, it is also possible to see a black bear near to the camp site. There is a spectacular range of birds Hawks, golden eagles, and peregrine falcons at the edge of the valley as well as a variety of birds including flycatchers, jays, hawks, warblers and woodpeckers. The park is a wonderful place and has some lovely nature. The summers can be hot and winters mild but snow falls at high altitudes of the Mesa Verde. Another One Historical Place - Bell Gable, Thira Island, Greece

Thira is the official name of the stunning Greek island of Santorini nestled in the Aegean Sea. It is situated about 200 km southeast of the Greek mainland, and covers an area of 73 sq km, with a population of just over 15,550. It is the biggest island of a collection and the southernmost of the Cyclades. The islands left today are the result of a mammoth volcanic explosion that devastated earlier settlements and what was once a single island. Thira has proof of this in the centre with a huge lagoon measuring approximately 12 km x 7 km, and surrounded by steep cliffs on three of the sides with the fourth the lagoon is parted by the sea and another tiny Island called Therasia. The lagoon is around 400 m deep and is able to serve sea vessels except large ships into the bay; where there is today there is a newly constructed Marina on the southwest of the coast at Vlychada. The main port on the Island is Athinias. The beautiful capital Fira is perched on the cliff top overlooking the magnificent lagoon, and it really is a wonderful setting. The island of Thira is a very popular tourist destination for travellers from all over the world. It is a scenic location for a vacation and has lots to see and do.



As with a lot of Greek Islands Thira Island is a truly astonishing and interesting destination to explore, along with being famous world wide. It is picturesque with its lovely cube shaped white houses, nestled on the stunning cliffs. The panoramic view of the traditional whitewashed houses made from local stone, blend in with the stunning volcanic scenery is a postcard image that makes this Island so famous around the globe. The houses are conveniently designed to keep cool in summer and warm in winter from the thick stone being dug into the surrounding pumice. They also provide excellent storage facilities for keeping preserved food and wine. Thira or Santorini is one of the few islands in the Cyclades that has a major airport. It is also offers services for car hire and taxis. There are many historical sites to see on this ancient island. Among them is the Bell Gable, which sits impressively looking out at the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. The Bell Gables are actually part of a church and some Greek beliefs are that the sea next to the Bell Gables is where Atlantis lies. This alone is a tourist attraction on this magnificent island, and draws tourists every year for those memorable holiday photographs.



The island of Thira has some stunning historical displays of architecture in the form of the church with its Bell Gables. It is an architectural feature which is built on the highest point of the church wall, and usually  in place of a church tower. It is a stone gable end with small semi-circulars archways where the church bells are positioned, perched on the edge of the cliff side. It is a fine example of Romanesque architecture is an architectural style that was a common sight throughout much of Medieval Europe. The Bell Gables is a lovely feature within the Greek island and the bells ring out over the village. They are a feature that many countries have used in the past was easier to build and cheaper compared to a bell tower. The Bell Gable is an uncomplicated structure, and can be found around the world. They would typically be built on top of one side of the building or on the middle of the roof at the top running from side to side. As with other historical monuments they are a stunning display of the countries culture and a great place to experience for visitors. These ancient monument is a major attraction for tourists, along with a number of museums, are galleries and archaeological sites that Greece is renowned for as a whole.



If you adore churches and admire the architecture of these fabulous historical treasures then you must pay a visit to Megalohori. Sitting on a hill facing east in the centre of the island of Thira is this peaceful quaint village with narrow roads that may be a little scary for drivers sightseeing in these tiny traditional Greek villages. A few tiered bell towers can be found on your approach to this pretty village. It is always worth taking plenty of snaps to remember your travels, and show off to family and friends on your return. As well as these stunning displays of history, there is nice well kept churches painted in the traditional white washed colour and the famous blue domes. Plus an array of quaint coloured cubes houses that this beautiful island is popular for. If you need a rest then there are some tavernas in the village square where you can sample the local Greek cuisine. Before you leave make sure you make a stop at the numerous wine tasting places that the island is famous for, and pick up a bottle or two for later. If you are island hopping you could always stay over in the only hotel in the village called the Vedema resort, or book prior to your visit a villa for a few days break and enjoy the relaxed way of life in this stunning location.



Santorini is the alternative name to Thira and probably the more famous, but as well is the name of the collection of islands that surround this major destination. They were all actually a single island up until the devastation of the huge earthquake around 1628 B.C.E. The islands all boast a wide diversity of landscapes, which is without saying is amazing. They have a wealth of traditional architecture, in particular the village of Mesa Gonia which has a large display of ruins from the last earthquake in the region in 1956. You can see renovated villas and wineries close to the area. Another place to visit to view culture and history of this stunning island is Pyrgos which is located inland; it is noted for a selection of Byzantine churches, relics of a Venetian castle and Grand old houses dating back centuries. Greek culture and history is a fascinating subject and intrigues people of all ages, and these interesting sites are a wonderful place to visit. Fira is the capital of Thira and a blend of Venetian and Cycladic architecture, where the cobbled streets are busy with shops, hotels, bars, cafes and tavernas. About 20 minutes walking from the capital is Imerovigli, where you can see the outstanding views of the unique scenery that the island has.



Thira is a unique island with a wonderful volcanic landscape, and attracts tourists annually for many reasons. It is known around the world for its striking views, and amazing sunsets from the town of Oia, the active volcano that sits beneath the lagoon. Without saying there are glorious beaches to enjoy water sports, swimming or just simply relax and sunbathe. To name a few of the beaches on this lovely island to top up your tan, there are Perissa, Eros, Kamari and Red Beach to name but a few.  The opportunity to cycle or hiking is available in the stunning countryside just remember to pack a rucksack with refreshments, sunscreen and a sun hat. A day exploring will be a rejuvenating experience taking in the beautiful natural surroundings. Relax at traditional Greek tavern, and spend the evening enjoying the delicious cuisine that is on the menu. Greek food accompanied by a glass of local wine or the local spirit ouzo is a great way to enjoy an evening. If you are lucky you may get to see the local traditional Greek dancing to the interesting music that Greece is famous for. You will have an unforgettable time in this stunning destination.


                       The island is well equipped to suit tourists, and it is worth noting that water is slightly salty, and most people drink bottled. There is only one natural spring on the island, in a cave at the rear of a chapel, up a stairway between Kamari and the Ancient Thira entrance.  The island of Thira is easily reached by plane of boat. The island attracts thousands of visitors every year and is a great place for all ages and suits all tastes. The summer season begins 1 April or close to the Greek Easter, and it is worth noting that the months of December to March many hotels and lodgings are closed as it is classed as out of season due to colder temperature, rain and wind. The spring and autumn are the best times to explore this fabulous destination as it is milder, less expensive and fewer crowds. Thira is a natural wonder and the main draw is the distinct landscape and coast. It is a shaped like a semi circle from the volcanic activity, and today still demonstrates the immense effect of that.

A Part Of The Australian History - Ayers Rock, Uluru

Located in Australia's northern territory is the magnificent Ayers Rock or Uluru to the local indigenous people. It is a stunning historical landmark of Australia, and an astonishing feature, and located 335 km south west of the closest large town of Alice Springs. Ayers Rock is an immense sandstone rock formation sacred to the Aboriginal people of the area. Encircling the wonderful landmark is an excess of springs, rock caves, water holes and cave paintings. It is also has been awarded the prestigious UNESCO site for the World Heritage Site. Ayers Rock is Australia's most famous and significant natural landmark. It stands at an impressive 348 m high rising to 863 above sea level, with a total boundary of 9.4 km, with the majority of the rock steeped under ground. It is a stunning site and is best known for its changing colour at different parts of the day, and the most significant time is its glowing red appearance at dawn and sunset. It is of great cultural importance to the local Anangu people who are the local people who live in the region. They are local walking guides for tourists, and provide information about the local bush food, wildlife, flora, and fauna and tell stories and myths about the Aboriginals of the area. It really is an impressive site to see.



Ayers Rock or Ulura is simply an island mountain. It is in fact a one-off result of slow erosion of what was once a mountain range. It is a remarkable geological feature and a singular massive rock formation, and made up of course grained sandstone. It is located in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, and in the Simpson Desert. The rock is believed to have existed for over 600 million years. It was originally at the bottom of the sea, but now stands above 348 m the ground. An incredible 25 m is underground. The exterior is made of caves, ridges and valleys, formed by erosion over million of years. It is the oxidation of the exterior that provides it with the amazing orange and red shade. Close by Kata Tjuta (or Olgas) is thought to have been around for the same time, and originally part of the same rock or stone, compared to the 36 that are left today. The Aborigines today own this land, but the Australian government hold a 99 year lease. The Ayers rock was initially called Ulura an Aborigine name. These tribes have existed in this area for over 10 000 years, white men did not settle here until later in 1870, when William Gosse named it after a the then-South Australia Chief Secretary  Henry Ayers. The Pitjantjatjara Aborigines today own this land, but the Australian government hold a 99 year lease.



Ayers Rock is a fascinating tourist site today, and travellers from all over the world come to see just how impressive it is. Although, Ayer Rock is a 5 hour drive to the major town of Alice Springs, but it is possible for tourists to stay at the nearby resort town of Yulara. There is hotel accommodation and areas for camping; however there are no actual facilities to serve tourists. But it is a good base and nearby for those who come to visit this impressive feature of Australia's outback. It is possible to explore the base of the impressive feature and there is about 10 km of pathway, and also climb Ayers Rock, it can take several hours. The best times of day to see the wonderful landmark is during the early sunrise or the late sunset, this is when you get to see the fantastic colour change from orange into a violet/blue shade. One of the best ways to see this incredible site is to stay in Alice Springs and arrange a guided tour to catch the sunrise and sunset, photography is allowed in  certain parts of the location . This wonderful site will be an unforgettable experience, and stay with you forever.



Ayers Rock or the Aborigine name the Ulura is in fact one of the world's most mysterious religious sites, even beside Stonehenge due to it being far more ancient. It is a sacred place for the Aborigine tribes since time began; it attracts hundreds of thousands to the site every year. There is a debate that climbing Ayers Rock as the Anangu Aborigine's belief the path was once used by sacred ancestors Mala Shamans who used its flat summit for special ceremonies. The word Urula means Earth Mother and the massive rock formation is believed to hold a special source of energy. Its amazing colour change at sunrise and sunset, and its glowing colour change is an incredible and unbelievable site; it is a place where dream time begins. The stunning desolate landscape has been populated by the Aborigines' for over 10 000 years. It is a hostile environment and living conditions are harsh. The summer heat can be unbearable which can sometimes close the area to visitors to this unbelievable site. The summer nights can work the opposite and temperatures can fall to minus 10 degrees Celsius. Another amazing site at night is the sky above. Australia's outback has no false light so stargazing and watching objects such as the famous Southern Cross constellation and Magellanic Clouds are impressive.



You really need to spend time and walk for a while around this wonderful cultural site. If  you climb the top make sure you enjoy the experience. Take in the stunning back drop and surrounding scenery that encircles this incredible place. It is a truly magnificent natural site, and there are some beautiful walks available. Just ensure you are well prepared for the heat.  The best way to view this stunning site is to use the local Anangu people to guide you. Although, they suggest that you do not climb Ayers Rock because of their religious beliefs they do provide an informative tour. The experience of climbing Ayer's Rock is reserved for the Anangu on special occasions. But, it doesn't stop visitors climbing the one km hike to the top of this significant t site every year.  The path is worn and many ignore the local Anangu, to see the spectacular view from the peak. It is more respectful to take one of the many walks at the base of the rock. There are many treks, and plenty to see and the interesting rock. Although, the path starts of busy as it is 10 km long, the further you go the quieter the path, as it is only for the serious walkers.



There are several walks of varying lengths to see this stunning area, and natural beauty. Aborigine culture states that the Ulura or Ayer's Rock was created by ancestral beings during dream time, and the many caves and crevices around Ulura represent ancestral spirits. Today many rituals and ceremonies are held in caves at the base of the rock. There is No Photography allowed here out of respect to these ancient beliefs and traditions of the locals, who have lived here for thousands of years and survived in this desolate landscape. The Australian outback is an astonishing location and you have to experience this amazing experience of Ayer's Rock. This geological monument is simply amazing; there is nothing else like it in the world. It is Australia's wonderful southern lands ultimate symbol. It is possible for you to see more about how the aborigines live at the onsite Uluru-Kata Tjuta Aboriginal Cultural Centre. It is situated south of Ulura, and is fantastic with local Anangu people telling stories about the Aborigine culture and life. You can learn about traditional bush skills and lots more to keep you enthralled. There are arts and crafts souvenirs that can be purchased here.


          This incredible monument is an unbelievable site to visit and discover, along with the stunning Australian outback scenery. There is so much to see in this interesting country, but this has to be on the top of your list. Even in its hostile and hot desert, it is worth making the trip. It is a remote wilderness, but it is well served for tourists. The nearby resort has a good choice of overnight accommodation with hotels food shop and camping. Just be aware there is nothing near to the rock, only stunning remote nature to endure and take in. It really is an impressive site and not to be missed, and a fascinating insight to the culture of the Aborigine people who have lived on this land for thousands of years. Ayers Rock is a superb place to visit, and see in a wonderful and interesting diverse country.

A Visit To Avdat, Negev Desert, Israel

 Advat is an impressive ancient site of a ruined city located in the Negev dessert of southern Israel. It   was awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 2005, and is also famed for its location in the famous filming of Jesus Christ Superstar.  The city of Advat has a long history and once the Israelites meandered here and later the sons of the dessert were the camel traders known as the Nabatean traders. Standing among the ruined city you can almost hear the echoes of the ringing bells of the camels of these travellers. They used this course known to many as the incense route in their hundreds, carrying their riches of spices, frankincense and myrrh to market by way of the Mediterranean. It became a very popular stop over place for their travelling caravans and today attracts travellers to explore this stunning and desolate landscape. Roman rule advanced the growth of Advat from a stopover for caravan to a city and eventually the Byzantines brought Christianity to the Negev, the Nabatean shrines were turned into churches and Avdat flourished as never before. Breathtaking views of the desert can be seen from one church. Plus an ancient wine press that presents their agricultural skills for the dessert, and what today's Negev farmers now try to replica.



Avdat is an ancient city and first a place to stay for the incense route in the Negrev dessert highlands, between Ramon crater and Beer Sheba. Formed into a city and flourished with the building of churches, workshops and agricultural farming. It was abandoned after an earthquake in the 7th century, and became a proposed site on the route to the south, a national park and a UNESCO site. Advat is a brilliant spot to stay just for a short time, as it as easy access by a road to the   visitors centre close to the ruins and there is ample parking close to the Roman Tower. The well known incense trail basically linked the east Yemen and Oman via Arabia, and through Nabatean Capital city Petra on to the port city of Gaza on the mediterranean coast. A road that totals in length 2 400 km, went throughout cruel dessert areas, exporting spices from southern Arabia and the Far East to Greece and Rome. Many farms, cities and services were set up during this era to serve the traders. Caravans of camels suited to this environment carried the goods. A Biblical map shows the route used and Advat in the Negrev dessert, and is dated from around the 3rd Century, where this city protected valuable goods from robbers and supplied refreshment and shelter to the traders travelling.



Negev dessert covers the southern part of Israel, and makes up half of the country's  land area. It is sparsely populated due to its dessert environment, but has quite a history behind it. As archaeologists have discovered it was a famous spice trail and traders  packed with valuable goods travelled through this area. Nearby Beer Sheva is where Abraham built his home. Now today for these reasons this is one of Israel's most popular tourist sites, and attracts visitors from around the world to see this magnificent part of history. It has been resolved that various people as  well as Israeli's have lived here including, Byzantines, Canaanites, Edomites, Nabateans, nomads and Philistines. The main source of business during this era was agriculture, trade and herding sheep. The main people of the dessert were the Nabateans who set up the spice road, and negotiated the caravan of camels with loads of spices, perfume and salt  from the Yemen through to it destination to the port of Gaza. They constructed rest stops for refreshments which today their relics are still left which make a significant impact of the history of the Negev desert. It was only 100 years ago that the current country of Israel was formed, when a few settlements established in the Negev and later were joined by others.



The Negev is a desert region and has very little rainfall with the Beer Sheva in the north, the mountain in the centre, and Araya and Eilat to the south. Fro most days of the year Negev is an expanse of inhospitable terrain. The river beds are dry, yet nature can be amazing with pretty flowers popping up everywhere such as vibrant red anemones. Heavy rain and storms can cause the river beds to flood. It is a wonderful piece of nature to discover in a rugged and hostile environment. The Negrev desert is home to some interesting archaeological sites, springs and the ancient relics of the past history of the agriculture. The main income today in the desert is tourism, and travellers adore others countries vast history and culture. Nowadays tourism is a growing business and tourists can explore the vast region either on foot, on a bicycle or in a 4x4 all terrain vehicles. Israel has an excellent climate with long, warm dry summers and mild winters. The Negeve region is a particularly dry area and has less rain than other parts of the country; hill areas can be cool in winter.



The site of Avdat is a stunning display of history and a great display of what life was once like in ancient times.  Today Advat is part of a 518 acre National Park, and the homes actually existed where the now visitors pathways are constructed. It is a wonderful place to see and experience. It is an impressive site to discover, and learn about how the place made such an impact on the region. It will not be hard to see why it has won the important UNESCO award, and also the close by cities of Mamshit and Shivta. When visiting this tremendous part of history, the visitors centre shows a short film to give you an insight on the mysteries behind this wonderful site. Here you can learn the history and a description about the places to see. Some of the parts you will be able to see are the luxurious bathhouse with a dressing room, 2 steam rooms, a furnace and a deep 200 ft well. From the top of the city there is a church with a temple that you can see the magnificent view of the desert and astonishing surrounding landscape. A guard tower that has Greek writing and a Nabatean place of worship to their god Oboda, of which the name of the city Avdat was named after can also be seen.



The Nabatean city of Avdat was named after King Obodas, and the UNESCO World Heritage site in the Negev desert has recently undergone a three year program of major renovation and repair. Around 2 million Dollars has been spent on the restoration and after damage by vandals a few years ago. The work consists of removing graffiti, repairing smashed stone work and damaged columns and the assembly of new displays of what the city would have appeared to have been like around 2 000 years ago. It is an amazing site to discover and you can learn so much about the history of Advat. It is immensely popular stop off with Christian pilgrims and tourists on the way to Eilat. Eilat is a popular and busy resort located close to the north of the Red Sea, on the Gulf of Aqaba. It is a vibrant place for a vacation, and has plenty to see and do and draws tourists globally every year.  It is a particularly a good place to visit because of the mild climate. With beautiful beaches, warm seas, coral reef, desert landscape and nightlife it has everything for a great trip and is in a great location for seeing surrounding regions. In the ancient Egyptian times the reason for building pyramids was to house the corpses (or the mummies) of deceased pharaohs after they had passed away. The pharaohs of Egypt were the equivalent to kings and gods of what we would know and were therefore very important, respected and wealthy. In the times when famous pharaohs such as the world renowned Tutankhamen lived, the pharaohs would order and pay for the construction work of a pyramid to be built for them whilst they were still alive and had power over Egypt. This was done in order for the Egyptian rulers to be able to pay for the work prior to passing away and also due to the fact that naturally, as a pyramid took so long to complete and therefore the work had to be started plenty of years before the pharaoh was anywhere near passing away.



The oldest and the largest pyramid that you should not visit Egypt to visit the pyramids without seeing is the Great Pyramid. The Great Pyramid, which is also known as the Great Pyramid of Giza, is well noted for being the largest and also the oldest pyramid of the three pyramids of the Giza Necropolis area of Egypt. In addition to being one of the oldest pyramids in the area and out of the existing pyramids in the world, the Great Pyramid is also the oldest of all of the buildings, natural creations and other landmarks which feature as the Seven Wonders of the World. It is said that the Great Pyramid of Giza was built for the pharaoh Khufu who was a fourth dynasty Egyptian. Researchers have discovered that the pyramid, which originally stood tall at a total height of 146.5 metres tall before being reconstructed and made to the height of 138.8 metres, took between ten and twenty years to complete! The type of this pyramid is a True Pyramid and until the height of the pyramid was changed, it was for many years the tallest and largest manmade (quite literally) construction to have ever been built. The pyramid held the title of being the tallest manmade structure for a total of 3, 800 years before it was demoted however, this does not change the fact the Great Pyramid of Giza is still a magnificent wonder of the world that should certainly be at the top of your list when it comes to seeing the pyramids of Egypt. 



Inside the Great Pyramid of Giza there are three chambers of which are known about. The lower chamber was left unfinished but the two remaining chambers of the pyramid - known as the King's Chamber and the Queen's Chamber are located higher up in the structure of the pyramid. These three chambers are burial chambers where pharaohs would have been buried. Although the pyramid would have originally been built for the pharaoh who would have been built in the kings chamber and his wife of whom would have been buried in the queen's chamber.  There are also numerous ascending and descending parts of the structure too. The pyramid consists of around 2.3 million stone blocks, each of which weighs roughly 2.5 to 15 tons each. The famous "mystery" of this particular pyramid is that although there are three known chambers within the pyramid there are also an additional several mystery chambers of which are very mysterious and that are sealed and seem to serve no obvious purpose.

Cappadocia



Cappadocia is a very beautiful and tranquil area of Turkey that you will simply love. It is incredibly stunning and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site too. The area is an ancient region of the Nevsehir province of Turkey, which is where the majority of the area is situated in along with also being a  part of the ancient Roman province of Cappadocia. It is one of the oldest historical regions of the country and dates back to as far as the year 17 AD and is home to the historical capital of Mazaca, which is a  popular city that is known also under the name Kayseri. Nowadays this region is a popular tourist destination due to the fact  that it is home to many geological, historical and cultural sites which draw in a lot of interest from people from all parts of the world. It is home to many unique features and sights and is one of the best places to visit in Turkey if you are looking to find an area that is great for spotting cultural sights and other fascinating features. The Cappadocia region of Turkey is situated to the south west of the famous and very modern city of Kayseri, which is also known as Mazaca and has an airport and railway station in which runs regular flights and trips to other major areas of Turkey, such as the capital city of Ankara and Istanbul.

Myra



Located in the present day Turkish province of Antalya, is where this stunning ancient city of Myra is located. Traditionally, the historic little town of Myra was a small and quaint town in the province of Lycia which is now known as the province of Antalya and the former town of Myra is now called Kale. The town is set on the stunning River Myre and boasts an attractive outdoor amphitheatre which has been present here on the plot since the historical times when the town was first found and discovered. Unfortunately, in the year 141 AD the semi-circular amphitheatre was destroyed in a devastating earthquake which completely destroyed it. The amphitheatre, which strongly resembles a Greek amphitheatre was later rebuilt and can now still be seen here in the town today. The area has strong Roman and Greek influences, the town of Myra is in fact actually an old traditional Roman town which is covered mostly by alluvial silts. In and around the town you will find a number of Greek and Roman ruins, although most of the ruins here are in fact of Roman origin more so rather than Greek. This is a stunning Turkish town which is strongly influenced by other European countries and is a fantastic place to visit whilst on your historical and cultural vacation in Turkey. In the town you will find a traditional Roman styled theatre, Roman baths and many unusual and interesting buildings and features which include rock-cut tombs.

Mount Nemrut



Nemrut, which is also commingly referred to as Mount Nemrut is or Mount Nemrud, is a large mountain which can be found in the south east of Turkey and is believed to have been a royal tomb from the early 1st century BC. In addition to being a major burial place for the royal family and its members in very historical times, Mount Nemrut is also listed  as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is situated in a beautiful area and is classed by UNESCO as a European-Asian spot in which the site is listed as a World Heritage Site. It is a cultural place and one of which is a highly visited and much visited destination too. On the mountain and around the area there are numerous glorious and very impressive statues located here on the mountain, this of which is something that the mountain is known for - for the summit where many large statues were built. Some of the statues still remain here today whereas of the others, only their remains and small traces of them remain. The statues are of many different types and resemble figures of animals, people and other objects and living beings. Each of the statues represents a god and this is why you will find that the statues have the name of the god in which they are dedicated to inscribed on the statue's head. The gods of whom the statues were dedicated to are of Greek, Iranian and Armenian origin.

In English the name "Pamukkale" means "cotton castle" and is a natural site located in the Denizli Province of southwestern Turkey. It is a city but not like the stereotypical cities that may come to your mind when you think of a city. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered to be a cultural destination and is a wonderful place to visit. Due to the fact that it is located close to the Turkish Aegean coastline, the area strongly features and shows a lot of Greek and Roman influence. Located in the River Menderes Valley of Turkey and set on the River Menderes, it is a picturesque destination where you will find tranquil hot water springs and travertines, as well as carbonate mineral flowing water. The area is lucky to have a moderate temperature all year round, which is an additional plus and advantage to visiting the area, as it is means that the city can be visited at any time of the year. The city has the nickname of the "cotton castle" because it is home to a large white castle which is thought to resemble cotton wool. The tourism industry serves as a main part of the area's income and visitors to the area still visit the city to bathe in the hot water spring pools, as they have done for the past few thousand years here. Hotels were built here in the region on top of the ruins which lead to a lot of damage being caused as a result. Built in the ninth century, the Borobudur Temple possesses a mixture of candi and stupa styled architectural features and is a result of the work of the architecture Gunadharma. The temple was officially completed in the year c. AD 825 and was  built for the Sailendra Dynasty. The Borobudur Buddhist Temple is a spectacular sight to see and that is just from the outside too! It is a place of interest that acts as a strong and important part of the local culture and also serves as an extremely popular place for tourists and visitors from nearby and faraway to come and see. As a result of being a popular tourist visiting destination, as well as being a very important and key part of the local culture, the Borobudur Buddhist Temple of Central Java was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1991 after receiving various types of help from UNESCO. UNESCO, along with the Indonesian government, helped to restore the temple between the years of 1975 and 1982 due to the fact that naturally, the temple needed to undergo some forms of restoration and reconstruction work purely because of its age and the battles in which it had experienced throughout its lifetime. The temple, having been constructed and completed during the ninth century, had began to experience a rather bad decline in its appearance and general state after the fourteenth century when it had been abandoned after the decline of many Hindu Kingdoms in the Java region of Indonesia. The fact that the temple began to appear run down was also the result of the Javanese conversion to Islam too.



The temple is said to show influences and evidence of both the Hinduism and Buddhism religion. The use for the temple is to serve two purposes, one of which is to act as a place for Buddhists on pilgrimages and it is also a shrine to the Lord Buddha too. For those Buddhists who plan to go on a pilgrimage around the Borobudur Buddhist Temple, the pilgrimage will begin at the base of this world renowned, ancient monument and will then continue their journey along a path around the Borobudur temple before then ascending the stairs up to the top of the three levels of which make up the monument. The three levels which make up this famous Buddhist temple represent the Buddhist cosmology, these of which are named and known as the following levels: K?madh?tu (the world of desire), Rupadhatu (the world of forms) and Arupadhatu (the world of formlessness).Despite the fact that the Borobudur monument is today a very iconic and popular visitor's attraction, it is also still used today as a place for Buddhists to embark on pilgrimages and in addition, it is also the spot in which all of the Buddhists in the Republic of Indonesia celebrate Vesak, which is also known as Buddha Purnima.
